They're off.
Left off 15 heifers yesterday. They weight from 365 to 565. Heaviest a Sim, lightest an Frx. They have been gaining about 0.5kgs per day inside on silage and minerals. They went out to a scarfice paddock last Tuesday and ate two bales to yesterday when I left them off to grass. Hope to start feeding them mid April and send them off late May early June. 5 FRx, 2Fr,4HEx, 2AAx, a Chx and a SIx
Grennans are gone to 18-4-12. No change in price either, funny that.
What moneys worth of fertilizer are you spreading per head over the course of the year bass?
All ready for Grass to explode but the weather stuck the pin back in that grenade.
New pm e is very low in P&K so will be spreading a good bit. Stock numbers are 85 to finish this year and 40 yearlings. Paid 14200 for a artic of feetlizer. 18 ton 18-6-12+S, 3T urea, 3T urea+S and 1.5T of PU. If the P&K's improved I coukd drop 4-6T of 18's and replace them with 3T of urea. It working out at 167 euro across the finishing cattle
Will urea be available next year or will it be PU instead?
Ya probably PU next year
jeez I think the grass has gone back into the ground in the last 2 days. That raw wind would fleece u. getting very tight now. Will have to stick out onto silage fields that were closed off .
I'm prepared to feed silage in the fields in the next while. 36 cattle where there was fifty last year.
yearlings and 2 year olds back in the shed this morning. Savage rain here the last few days and an awful lot more on the way.
A bit of respite for man and beast for a few days
Everything out. Nearly 30 gone on ration. Bunch of heifers and some bullocks started a two weeks last Thursday. Rest started last Sunday. One bunch on 3kgs second bunch 4kgs.
Grass will get tight on the main farm in two weeks if I get caught I will put finishing bunch in a scarface paddock with silage and 4 kgs. Bunch of stores on this farm can graze part of a silage paddock.
Got fertiliser out last week…..had to go with 18:2.5:5……as 18:6:12 not available…..
Spread Slurry by dribble bar on some ground….not an overly thick coat…..
Had ploshes of rain Thursday and Friday and more to come over the weekend…..am tight enough for grass….
How soon could you let sheep in on the ground slurry was spread on?
I had everything out since 15 March and some were out nearly since mid February. Have just enough grass at rhr minute but if it gets poached too bad with this rain then I’d be flucked so didn’t take the risk. hopefully get them back out midweek I see the rain planned for Tuesday is not as bad now so fingers crossed 🤞
Grass getting real tight here. Regrowth is very slow in the midlands. I'll probably need to bring all in next week to allow grass push on a bit. I've loads of silage over so not biggest issue but not ideal either
⬆️…….Really appreciate any thoughts on my question of how soon you can let stock into ground that got slurry?
TIA
often spread with cattle out on it. But after this rain you could let them in straight away.
Straight Away
not sure on some of the answers here would u like your dinner covered in shite and expected to eat it. Generally a week to 10 days here aside ing it’s washed in.
a few variables here. how watery was slurry
Splash or dripple/trailing shoe
How heavy was it put on
Did it get rain to rain it down afterwards
Was there much grass cover
A simple eye test will do. If it’s still sitting on the leaf of the grass then simply no don’t graze it. At worst grass will be contaminated and cattle simply won’t eat it. If it’s washed off the leaf then whilst the grass might be a little sour for the cattle, they’ll still eat it and it won’t do any harm to them.
Thanks……was quite watery slurry onto bare enough grass and got heavy rain a day after it went on and spread with dribble bar by contractor.
My thoughts on it would be that after heavyish rain you could graze after a week…..will be sheep going on it.
Will walk it tomorrow,if manure well gone off the leaf I will let stock in as there will be continuing rain all week.
If it's spread by DB then the sheep will eat between the lines
If it was bare ground less than a week ago then regardless of slurry there’s not much point putting stock back on it, there hasn’t been that much growth in the last few days.
The worst thing you can do with grass is overgraze it, grass needs a chance to grow.
Cheers for everyone's feedback……yeah I appreciate that there is no point in overgrazing ground but covers are poor and if I could spread stock more evenly over ground till the inevitable growth spurt arrives I think that's the way to go iykwim.
took a few days off to get all the cattle out and get some trees cut up off the fences. Weather forecast is not great would I be aswel to turn the cattle out redardless as tomorrow is a decent day it better to hold tight until the weather settles?
I had mine out and brought them in yesterday before this heavy rain today.
More rain Friday so might hold off and let them out Saturday/Sunday again.
I've a bunch of 2 year heifers that have been out 3 or 4 weeks might bring them back in tomorrow, grass not kicking on ahead of them and a week in the shed will give it a bit of time to recover. Very cold out there again today.
I haven’t grazed anything yet so have plenty of grass just don’t want to get any cattle with chills as it is very cold rain also if I could keep the land from keeping tramped would be a benefit I wouldn’t think there is a lot of feed valve in grass presently either this week. Next week does look like it is going to be better but feed is getting low also. I’m just p**sed off with the weather overall and the forecasts are not accurate they give rain then to pick up by the time it gets to where it should pick up its raining even more 😤
100%
I have them in and out and then back in again. Pain in the arse but that's the Irish weather.
floods of water in the fields here. Forecast looking good from today on so hopefully get these back out Monday
Some fine looking stock you have
thanks. The dog probably would bring down the average a bit…….
