Thinking of getting Sky Stream. Does it have audio channels available like RTE RADIO etc like Sky Q has?
No radio channels though it does have the awful (in my opinion) Radioplayer app.
When it comes to negotiating renewals with Sky, how do people go?
Threaten to cancel and they will throw you a bone or two?
I asked for the same deal I had for the first year or I leave and they gave it to me. There's no way would I pay close to the regular price for it.
In a recent internet outage, I noticed that a recent software update has removed the Saorview functionality.
Obviously I just plugged the aerial back into my TV so no big deal but it was a handy feature.
The line from Sky on that one is that the DTT tuner only exists to fulfill a regulatory requirement in the Italian market and that it having been activated in Ireland and the UK was a mistake.
DTT functionality in comparison to what is on a television was useless anyway with the limited EPG.
Yeah but I used the puck on a projector in the shed a couple of times for matches.
First world problems I know but when the hardware is there and the functionality exists, it's a bit stupid not to join the dots. Or more precisely, to join the dots and then rub it out.
I suppose the broader point is the puck is provided to you to access the Sky pay TV service, it’s not meant as a Saorview reciever. I think the only channel on Saorview that’s not on Sky is VMTV Four? Yes it’s nice to have a back up if the internet goes down but plugging the aerial (if you have one of course) into the back of the TV accomplishes that too.
VMTV Four is on Sky. It's way down the EPG though and not grouped with the other VMTV channels.
I read that Sky Q will drop some HD channels in April, going SD only, in a move to push people to Sky Stream where the HD channel will be found. An interesting move. So a question, which might be answered already, say I currently record Corrie on VM1 and sit down ten minutes into it airing - I can watch easily from the start on Sky Q. For Sky Stream if I add the same show to my playlist, can I watch from the start as it’s airing and afterwards or do I have to wait for Virgin to upload it?
You can Watch from Start while it's playing. If you miss the playing window completely, you may have to wait hours for the episode to be available.
There was a bug with Watch from Start, where if you tried to fast forward to skip the ads for example, after the broadcast had actually finished, it messed it up. If you let it play out without any attempts to do anything, it would play out normally.
I'm not sure if this bug has been resolved.
Not very clear if this is a push from Sky or a solo run by UKTV. Only one of the three channels in question is actually owned by Sky.
When Sky want to push, it will be the sports and movies HD channels that will be getting axed, not three minor channels two of which it doesn’t even own. Not saying they won’t down the road but also not clear whether this is the “push” concerned.
None of the channels are operated or broadcast by Sky (Sky History 2 is licensed by a third-party to use the Sky name) so I don't think Sky are directly to blame and I don't think it's any widespread move to start push people away from Q.
However Sky have been reported to have cut the income to channels for keeping their HD broadcasts behind the HD add-on.
If broadcasters reckon that cut means broadcasting in HD on satellite is no longer viable then they're going to stop doing so and just take what little is left of the basic pay TV package income by broadcasting in SD only.
Whereas Stream is HD by default - there are a whole host of channels in HD on Stream that were never at any point in HD on satellite.
Got an email today saying my pucks are being used outside my house and that I will be charged €38 a month if this continues . Rang them and asked them to tell me can they check where they are being used outside the house because it's news to me . They told me they couldn't tell me because it's an automated system but my account won't be charged . What a load sh**te . The only thing I could think of is we have one router plugged into another to boost signal around house but sky said that wouldn't matter !
I got this with the €24 a month for 12 months deal with Netflix/Discovery Plus thrown in. It's fine, but the lag switching channels (connected via Cat 6 cable to 1GB VM broadband, so not a connection issue) and no dedicated TV Guide button is annoying. Definitely won't be paying €40 odd a month when the deal is up anyway!
I've been offered a deal too after cancelling my Sky Q.
Half price for Ultimate is tempting but are the channels in HD or do you have to buy an add-on for that too? And are box sets part of it like they were with Sky Q?

they’ve offered to keep me on the 60 for another year without me doing anything and no new contact. That’s all the sports UHD and entertainment package and Netflix.

UHD content is probably pretty much the same as Sky Q so. What about HDR, my Sky Q unit was one of the older ones that weren't capable of it.
HDR is included with UHD.
Cheers, offer is pretty reasonable, despite its shortcomings, when you factor in I'd be paying for Netflix Premium by itself anyway
I got the €24 a month deal last year and it finished this month. Called them to see if there were any offers available, best they could do was reduce by €5, which was still working out at nearly €50 p/m for just the sky stream on its own. Gave the cancellation notice and it seems they won’t be offering anything better.
Doubt it is because it switches between routers/access points. Its all the same network. If it is, they are thick as pig sh1t.
if the SSID’s are different between the two wireless routers and the MAC address of the default gateways are different the pucks will think they are on different networks.
Typically, every device on your home network has its own unique private IP address but shares the same public IP address. Sky Stream needs to go outside of your home network to stream the channels. The public IP is what the backend services should check first, when that changes it can still verify it is on the level by verifying all other devices with the previous public IP also have the new one. From what I can see with my ISP, the public IP doesn't change all that often. I have a mesh network at home, my home devices are more likely to change their private IP addresses than my public IP address is to change.
Not arguing, I am sure you know all that but explaining why I think its dumb.
Meanwhile we are able to bring our Sky Q box from our home to our holiday home (where we have the dish set up) without any issues. Surveillance is an added extra with Sky Stream apparently
Got the same email in June . After being fobbed off by agent in April the fella in June was great . He said he had actually flagged it as a potential issue ( two routers being used with two different Ip addresses ) when they rolling out new automated system to detect usage outside the registered address but they didn't listen to him . He went and solved it for me .
Can anyone with Sky Stream check if there's much CBeebies content available to stream here in Ireland?
I can't see any CBeebies content in the BBC section of programming available to stream. The only channels shown in that section are BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4.
