In County clare I estimate about 5% of the cars have non compliant number plates, and the vast majority of them are on BMWs and Audis.
Do the police ever take action on this issue?
Ah cmon not everyone is a drone slavishly following the gospel according to the few. I mean why do wear jeans that make your ass look fine when it's behind you😆
They barely enforce speed limits so can't see them enforcing this unfortunatly - especially when its a grey legal area.
Yes your idea is a great solution and would fix a good lot of cases but there needs to be the will to enforce it. Irish politicians aren't exactly known for their will to push unpopular bills/enforcement(road offenses!)
The fact that they go to the effort of swapping out reg plates or windows for NCTs suggests a fair degree of ill will is involved.
Having a discussion on a discussion site = being a busy body obsessed with people’s lives? Interesting take.
Mind similarly interesting is the assumption that anyone with non standard plates is a criminal mastermind of some kind or a bad driver.
Is there no middle ground anymore? Can this not just be a discussion on the topic without accusations that everyone who posts here is a nosey bastard and the same goes for people with fancy plates do we have to just assume they’re dodgy cnuts?
In Switzerland, you retain the same plate even if you change the car. You get a second plate if you get a second vehicle. Vehicle without a registered owner carry no plates.
That latter assumption is partly true - custom plate means your a cnut. A few are dodgy too but most just think its cool.
Why do you need one? All you are doing is purposefully avoiding tolls/speed cameras.
I suppose if you consider minor infringements like that as ill will. But to suggest that anyone with a non standard plate or similar is doing it to avoid detection of crimes is a bit of a stretch.
I’ve had both non standard plates and slightly excessive window tint on both my first and second cars years ago and I’m not a criminal by any means. I just did it because I thought it looked cool, and its the same story with the majority of people modifying their cars.
I mean surely if your a real criminal you use cloned plates, not non standard ones..
ah cmon sure you don’t need a bloody car either but here we are plenty have it.
There’s also plenty driving around in far fancier cars than they’d ever need so what of it if they like the look of a 4D plate? Hardly cutting around mowing down pedestrians or grannies coming from bingo.
I’d have to say I’d be far more concerned with learning that only 7% of disqualified drivers surrendered their licence last year than I would be with lads or ladies with funky licence plates. And finally, if you cannae read the bastard thing you probably shouldn’t be driving. They’re hardly written is hieroglyphics for Christ sake.
Not much point trying to talk sense in response to that type of post
oh yeah sorry I’ll get outraged there and grab my pitchfork.
So what’s the plan lads are we gonna go collect all the illegal plates yeah? Maybe we should take a moment to stop and lecture the owners on how criminal they are. Maybe not though. I say they’re probably into drugs and guns and the likes. Sure it’s a slippery slope.
My mammy told me if you use illegal plates the next step is organised crime.
If you have nothing to add to my post, don’t bother replying to it.
It would be pretty easy to stop it alright - the technology is available, the law just needs to explicitly state any non regular plate is illegal. Lets say a fine based on a % of cars estimated value. The law just needs to be updated and then enforced which never happens in this country when it comes to motor offenses.
Just because its a "harmless" crime (huge emphasis on the harmless) doesn't mean stuff should just be let slide.
These things are a slippery slope. At what point do we draw the line at crimes that should be considered seriously and what should just be ignored? Thats what your arguing for in your post anyways.
I'm agreeing with you🤣 Must work on my comms skills
no I do apologise i did not read your post correctly!! So sorry!
A slightly off topic subjuct, but why who someone drive around without a number plate? A Yugoslavian family around the corner have a very nice Volvo XC90 but have been driving around without a number plate on the front for the past month. They cannot notice that it's missing, just wondering if there's an advantage to be had?
There is a plate on the rear presumably? Irish plate or ???
Yugoslavia hasn't existed for a good while now!
There hasn't been a Yugoslavia since 1992. If they're here since before then they are probably Irish at this stage
What’s the story with number one on plates?
My own plate has a standard plain vertical line denoting number one like “ I “….. sometimes I see cars with a serif style 1 or 1 with the horizontal bar on the bottom.
Something the zero has a bit cut out.
Are either of these legal?
Some examples of the above:
Actually… 😉 The Union of Serbia and Montenegro which split in 2006 was known as Yugoslavia until 2003 😉😉
Its German font
Are these allowed?
Sometimes you also see clowns swapping the IRL for D 🙄
Jugoslavija is a frame of mind, not a country 🙂
…neće dugo.
Most non standard plates just look a bit silly but are as legible as the standard. German font is plonkerish tbf, a bit less than having some stupid slogan on the window or your insta handle though.
That said there is a black on dark grey style plate that only exists because it is hard to read. I'd have no issues with a car being confiscated if it had those.
100%.
They need to start crushing cars at the owners’ expense.
If they have IRL, county, and hyphens they will pass the NCT as far as I’m aware. Not sure about the ones that contain a zero tho since its not fully connecting
Confiscated / Crushed ???
Our lovely motors.
Are you guys sure you're in the right forum ?
This is a good start

They all get crushed
That's for driving uninsured not having dodgy digits on a number plate.
Doesn't law already state non conforming plates are illegal ?
That black on dark grey is disgreysful. Seriously .
I was trying to quote @MrMusician18 here but it didn't work
