Did you sell the 2 heifers?
I dont know why people bullshit,do they want a medal? Life's too short to think there's no one better than you
You Will learn in time. I just hope it won't be too late for you.
I think it was posted here before. Two people together will do the work of three people singly. Especially at livestock. Maybe it may be less sharp than that. Three people together will do the work of four people singly. From the each other motivation, to a job that just can not be done by one person on their own safely or otherwise.
All this talk originated from New Zealand dairy about cows per one labour unit. But the labour units there are more than one person for a start and the number of cows are large herds where it looks more efficient per one labour unit. But the efficiency is masked back again by the more than one labour units on the farm that are needed for those two person jobs that every farm has. And their lack of a winter and likely every job contracted out. And then you have to ask are you farming for yourself or for everyone else.
Most farmers know what works best on their own farms and where efficiency can be improved without giving too much away out the farm gate. It's a metric that often is used to not help farmers on their own farms but to put pressure on from outside inside the farm. And then where are you. 7pm and the family if there's time for one and they haven't left, wondering where their father or mother is. Most people know what works and what doesn't in their own life.
Do understand the point your Making but Having worked off farm for years it's become clear to me that there's nothing thought of people who work hard. What would you do with a donkey but ride them!
think your forgetting what it’s like starting out ….when your young and you have drive and ambition you’ll work your hole off ….its the time of your life to do it whilst the body is able for it …you’ll get married have kids and try instill that in them and try and leave them something viable just as what your parents gave you …some people have that drive and ambition into there 40s and 50s …nothing wrong with it as long as you enjoy it and can have a life and interests outside farming
Going to the mart Saturday.
I bought 4 calved cows yesterday on the strength of it! Not the type of cows I’d ever have thought I’d buy (they’ve 20-40% JE in them) but they’ll put milk in the tank and I’ll be keeping the calves next year anyway.
Nothing at all wrong with them. Probably suit the once a day milking.
It's some strange year calf wise. I was watching skibb mart Friday, a local 400 cow plus farmer was getting nearly 400 for aax bulls off frx cows, a Jersey cross herd. Last year they would have been sold at ten days for a fiver. Now they are kept till 28 days plus and getting 350 euro plus.
No crystal ball could figure out this farming business
Who ever buys those are on a hidin to nothing, Calves were always difficult to make money on but they're so badly bred now it's going to be nigh impossible
If a lad had bought similar two years ago and was selling them.at present they could be averaging over 2K (260 DW×7.75 euro flat).
Paying 375 now is at a higher margin than getting them for 30-50 euro two years ago ( 260kgs X 5=1300 euro). His gross margin this year is 1650 two years ago it was 1250.
Cows are crossbred here the lad that buys the angus calves showed me kill sheet from some of bullocks he killed a couple of weeks ago. They averaged just over €2.5. averaged over 300kg dead. Two year old cattle.
AI bred calves. % of jersey would vary between 25% and 5%. When he started buying off us a few years ago, he was worried about crossbred cows. Doesn't bother him at all now.
the 2 black bulls are by episode fr7533 and the 3 white ones to the left are by a **** stock bull I kept (not good enough for Ai) by a bull called moose fr4751 and the white heifer on the right is by Vader
Your profit should be based on what it casts to restock, not the rise in value.
Rise in value is just paper profit if you have to restock,
And that is the restock values I gave you I was comparing a factory and calf price two year ago to a similar calf and factory animal now
Another dispersal sale of a good herd

I suppose the peak of calves have passed. Is that second boat for exporting back yet? I have about 60 Feb/March calves to get rid of here ASAP.
Are many calves actually going for export this year at all?
That's what will give them a work ethic... 😉
Seriously, I think they get it if there's sonething special or seasonal going on, sowing, calving, and a weather window needs to be caught, not routine slogging though.
They'll be happy you worked late when you're giving them the deposit for their houses
I dont know if i posted this before but I rang a lad one night and I asked what he was at , I'm sitting in the jeep oh is putting the kids to sleep, couldn't be doing with that ****. Will go in when they're asleep. They've since separated.
That's Fair thick. I didn't get away with that but it's only fair to help out. The better half would have done more with mine when they were younger than me in fairness but I did my share.
When I was younger I remember seeing the same fellas in the pub every evening. They would have had young families at the time. Thinking back now I'd wonder how they got away with it. Not saying they didn't work hard during the day but its not the 1950s anymore.
my wife would actually kill me
Brittany ferries at it now as well. Think there's a boat every day of the wwwk now..
bar the spring I put the kids to bed here most nights. I love it. That’s when ye knock the craic out of them and they tell you what went on in school/creche
It's the same as the car journey to or from sports or whatever, a bit of crack and 1 to 1 time. People dont know what they're missing and the years go by so quick.
I read someplace that the greatest conversationalist in the world is a child at their bed time!
It's just the Irish ferries boat from Dublin and the brittany ferries contentin from rosslare. Still tighter than normal I'd say though
That’s a delay tactic. They know the more they talk the longer they get to stay up I think 🤣
It's amazing how they can pay for them when they have to.
