if you haven’t a contract it’s pointless. I milked through this winter and I’m not sure would I do it again. We held onto the culls to help with the volume but with out them I would have had very small numbers to milk. December was worthwhile but January wasn’t. What I produced in January would be produced in 4 days atm and at half the cost
milked thru here last few years …don’t calve any in autumn ,pull start of calving back to 10 janurary milk oad from 01 December to start of calving ….i certainly won’t be stopping ,lots of pluses to it ,workload is minimal and there’s money in it …twas gas earlier in spring I was near lynched on twitter for saying February is grand month just calving and calves ….lads tierd from calving cows up day and night and that’s after cows been dry for 6/8 weeks
WWell That answers the question in your own system. Not enough return for the bother of producing milk in a month or maybe two that you could be either talking it easier or doing another project on or off the farm. I'm not sure liquid milk will continue here in the next few years we are supplying it 50 years I'm told.
we had a liquid contract here before that business was sold …could of gotten contract but at solids I was getting I was getting more for my non contract milk …not calving in autumn and milking oad for 6 weeks ….having cows calving in April no great big deal for me and when milking through cows get to be milked to near enough 305 days ….look not for everyone but suits here
WWas Your contract not bonus plus solids.... mj ...ours is. I'm purely coming from the labour cost and extra work associated with it a serious amount of lads have got out of it around here in last few years
no it was just set price over base with no adjustment for solids ….purely a liquid contract ….we pay a winter bonus now for December janurary and February …its plus solids but a weak price in comparasion to winter bonuses other coops offer
How is it when people talk about winter milk everyone says about extra work,no-one says about the extra work of compact spring calving.its ok at 100 cows approx but once numbers creep above that that burst of work in those few weeks can be excessive and its much harder to do things properly. The pressure applied to people,facilities and even the poòr old bull and whatever about the economics what about yourself.wouldnt be grand to calve away a shot of cows in sept and october when things are quieter and ease the pressure in the spring.unless you go down the route other feeds the only extra work on most days is the milking
if you’ve good herd of fertile cows that can do over 7 k litres at good solids % there is absolutely nothing wrong with it especially in one man units …compact spring calving is great but brings big pressure at times of year ….id be more in the steady catagory

Some of the most efficient and best farmers i know are well above 100/cows a man spring calving, north of 220 actually. None of them complain of being busy, imo doing the work of 3 men. However all have large land borrowings and a remarkable method of work. From viewing their yards everything is remarkably simple. Nothing fancy or over specced. 3 or 4 big batches of 40 to 50 calves for feeding on milkbars etc. Wouldnt be sat on the couch for 6.30 pm but just seem to get through work. Loads of gates hanging in just the right places. Big shear grabs for 2 day feeding.

My brother in law always had around 100 dairy cows and and kept the calves to beef and there was always three working on the farm and he swore he was killed

In all fairness life is far too short ,if any man milking 100 cows can not pay a bit of labour there is some thing seriously wrong with him no matter how many gates he has hanging

I’d class myself as over that marker. Dad still does a nice bit but I wouldn’t class him as a full time man either with the hours he does. I could do with a full time person along side us but we’re paying a fair loan on infrastructure improvements. Ye can’t have it every way. I work hard, just how it is atm for me any way and I’m happy out at it
