America's reputation has been in decline for about 10 to 15 years but the last two months of the Trump administration has brought it to a new low. I wonder if there's anything still admirable about the country.
It's a good distance from here.
some amazing national parks, though Tangerine man is trying to ruin that aswell
Music (think of all the genres that originated in such a new country), film, literature, theatre (prefer American theatre to British), TV, comedy, journalism in the not too distant past. A tremendous sense of history, interest in one's roots. So much heritage - again for such a young country. I've been there twice - New England (Salem, Boston), upstate New York for Civil War history, then I visited the deep south - New Orleans. Whole lot fascinating.
Spectacular, majestic scenery; cool cities.
It's an amazing nation but it's just so damn politically volatile, and has terrible problems too... and it seems like they're coming home to roost.
Years ago I spent 3 months travelling around across the US by myself. I met some lovely people along the way (as well as some mad ones). A few people offered me places to stay on my trip. I didn't take anyone up on their offers but it was nice all the same. Americans seem very at ease in each others company. Myself and my wife and son went on a hotel break recently and there were Americans on a bus tour staying in the hotel. They had all mostly just met each other but all seemed to be getting on like they knew each other much longer. I second the National Parks as well. The few I've been to were amazing.

Plus as another poster alluded to, on a personal level the people can be very friendly and helpful.
It would be hard to pick one thing there are so many it's a pity what the orange one is doing.
The wilderness and emptiness that still exists in America. My dream if I ever won the euro-millions would be to buy a massive ranch in Montana.
Also all the different high quality sports leagues that exist there.
American Movies, TV Shows and Literature are excellent aswell.
Not sure where you're getting your ideas from about places tech were developed, cause you're wildly off the mark with nearly all of it.
Smartphones existed before Apple, the biggest brand being mostly made in the EU by a Finnish firm, running a UK operating system.
DVD was developed by Japanese and European vendors (as were CDs back in the day - just Sony and Philips there) with very little involvement by US firms
Much development of mobile comms standards is European - Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson being critical. The US was still using analogue mobile phones as default when we already had mobile internet in the early 00s.
The web (http/html) was developed in Switzerland by a Brit.
Kodak may have developed the CCD (the technology for digital cameras) but never used it. Japanese firms introduced the first professional, and eventually the first consumer digital cameras and digital video cameras.
Linux is Finnish in origins.
We have a vaccine for one cancer, your namesake opposes it.
It was developed in Australia.
One thing I like is the beautiful scenery. The Florida Keys, the Montana Mountain Range, Yosemite National Park along with all the other national parks, and the vast open landscape are reasons for me to visit America. A beautiful country.
I've enjoyed a few driving holidays (can't say Florida was worth it), but what's frustrating is how much more better it would be if they did more long distance trainlines. For scenery and ease of travel Europe is excellent in comparison.
They make very good hamburgers.
Hooters has gone bankrupt, close the thread.
They used to make good movies back in the day.
Has it not gone bust?
I think the last US movie I enjoyed in the cinema was There Will Be Blood, which was 18 years ago!
It just seems after that it all became comicbook francises.
Maybe David McWilliams would call it the implosion of the stimulus economy!
If you have an interest in space travel, historic and current, there are few places like it. Some areas of outstanding natural beauty too.
Scusa?
In two thousand years, if the world hasn't been destroyed, when the archeologist are digging up our remains they won't be able differentiate us from them.
But getting back to topic the New Hollywood era of the 1970's was the highpoint for cinema.
It’s not Ireland
And crappy remakes.
The scenery. Some of it is spectacular, and I was mainly in Florida which was mostly flat.
The theme parks, no-one does it like them.
NASA and the American science community in general, although that's under threat. They must have the most excitable science community in the world.
There's plenty to like about America, just not as much as there used to be, and with the way things are going, even less going forward.
