This week at the Paris Motor Show I had a chance to have a 1st look at the BYD Sealion 7. I'll be doing a more detailed review and drive mid November.
Compared to the Skoda Enyaq, Renault Scenic, Ford Capri Kia EV6 and even in some ways to its own Seal model. It's not just about the dynamics its the pricing and where it is priced at too what it competes with.
I feel its overpriced. The top spec model should be not over €49,900. That way they can attract more buyers. The build quality is definitely superior than Tesla. Thats just my opinion.
Prices haven't been released yet.....
German prices have, it’s not going to be cheaper than Germany.
Was in a BYD dealership during the week looking at small cars for a neighbour. There was a Sealion 7 (LHD) in the showroom so had a quick look.
Impressive solid feeling car, looked so much better in real life than in pics. And interior looked and felt great.
Dare I say it but I thought it made the regular Seal look dated and bland.
The seal awd is 53.5k, in what world is the suv equivalent of a saloon priced significantly lower?
Renault scenic, over 50k in top spec, 220bhp, reviews note cheap interior, poor ride around town,
Ford capri 62k in top spec , 340 bhp, cramped inside v sealion, again noted as an unegaging ride
Kia EV6 65k in top spec, 580 bhp so comparable on that front, decent room and smaller but reasonable boot, not a suv as such but similar to the sealion,
Enyaq probably the closest in terms of size and people cross shopping , 61k in top spec , only 280 bhp
So you arent convincing me here, if someone wants a good looking, fast, spacious, EV SUV the sealion is a better bet that most if not all of the above and cheaper than all of them like for like as well.
Completely agree the only real comparison is with the Model Y, Model S for the Seal. So if you don't want a Tesla then the Sealion makes a lot of sense.
" Renault scenic, over 50k in top spec, 220bhp, reviews note cheap interior, poor ride around town,"
Well the cheap interior bit on the Scenic is rubbish. Nothing cheap about. It is classy and high quality. I would say the EV6 interior feels worse and yes I have been in both. Not sure about the other two think they are OK but not as nice as the Scenics.
Take it up with carwow or honest John
Anyway it's not a sealion competitor
The well established brands are on the same price level, then why should I get BYD if prices are in the same range as others and technology is also average. Only thing that I felt is superior in Sealion 7 is the interior quality.
Like for like which established brands are the same price?
The tech is average? Explain
BYD are putting a serious amount of kit as standard. There no real options to add as it's all included.
If I price up any of the established brands I need to add all the packs which adds $$$ way above the BYDs and there still things missing.
That's without even mentioning the powertrain differences.
I’d suggest you take a look at the interior of an Enyaq. If you don’t notice the difference, remove the Renault blinkers and have another look.
Please refer to this review posted earlier.
Don't get me wrong, the quality is excellent, as highlighted earlier. But I am considering new model Y vs Sealion 7. The AWD Model Y will be cheaper than excellence sealion 7.
Plus there is no doubt in terms of reliability for Tesla and also no annual service needed. The BYD dealer told me service will be in the range €300 annually.
Mate, if you don't want a Sealion you don't have to buy one.
Sir, please don't make false assumptions.

Launch week for Sealion 7 in Ireland.
The requirement for servicing will be the same for both they have the same consumables despite what either manufacturer tells you. It's 55k for the awd model y I doubt there will be much in it price wise and the sealion will include a set of tyres under the maintenance plan I'd guess which is a grands worth at least.
Pick whichever one floats your boat but like for like it shouldn't be a cost decision.
Agree, like the Seal, the AWD versions from Tesla and BYD seem to match up. The only discrepancy was in the RWD versions for some reason.
The service requirement gets thrown out a lot, partially because of Teslas “non requirement for an official service” to maintain warranty.
That doesn’t mean Tesla cars can site there and ignore the usual checks but you don’t have to go to main dealer to get these done. You still should be checking tyres, brakes, suspension parts etc
There’s also the 6 year warranty V 4 year warranty argument. If the services were €100-€150, is see no problem paying that to achieve an additional warranty over the 4 years that Tesla offer.
Anyway, they very much even out so it’s really down to personal likes at this stage. They all kinda look the same anyway. The sealion7 looks like an outlander, the MY looks like an xpeng or Kona now.
Irish prices just announced for BYD Sealion 7 from €45,435 up to €56,490. Dealer and delivery charges not included.
So €48k to €59k when you add in MSL Delivery charges?
I think TMY LR has 78.4kWh and Sealion 7 has 82.5kWh, but because they are adding one with slightly larger battery they would be again be compared to TMY RWD on cheapest model.
The Excellence model will most likely have a decent performance boost too.
not great WLPT Figures for such large batteries, so minus 20% from them!
I'm pretty sure the Excellence is the same performance as the Design AWD (both the same 523bhp as the Seal saloon Excellence). I don't see the €4k jump from Design to Excellence as being worth it for a slightly bigger battery, somewhat faster DC charging, HUD and real leather. Design is the pick of the bunch at ~€54340 OTR. Comes in about the same price as the Model Y LR AWD but is more powerful and nicer interior and presumably two year service plan. The walk from the (pretty much equivalent besides HUD) Seal saloon at ~€2500 is fair enough. Good to see it getting larger wheels and red calipers - addresses one of my criticisms of the Seal Excellence which is that there is zero to differentiate it from the Design besides a badge.
I will say though that BYD's naming conventions are confusing. Seal Design = RWD 313bhp, Seal Excellence = AWD 523bhp. Sealion Design = AWD 523bhp.
interesting review, he talked about a disconnect between the driver and the car, but he didn’t mention which driving mode he was in, the sport mode changes the cars power delivery and driving style.
agh right. So not following through.
It’s never going to be a ‘at one with machine’ driving experience in a car like this, it’s not meant to be either, sport mode will make it have a more sensitive throttle and a heavier wheel feel perhaps, that’s it. It’s a decent sized, quiet cabin, quick in a straight line car and for the entry to mid spec price, has a nice interior. For the top of the range including delivery heading for 60k, it’s a bit lacking interior quality wise.
Oof, seems only the top spec Excellence includes metallic paint! Extra €1600 on the Comfort and €1100 on the Design. Not a good move BYD. The only saving grace may be that all their colours (on the Seal anyway) are good so standard might be ok.
As expected, on a head to head comparison, Sealion 7 is more expensive than the new Model Y.
In my opinion, the Excellence is atleast €5K overpriced!
