Very high CPU temps all of a sudden.

Hi people I booted up my rig this morning and noticed unusually high fan sound so i opened up a few programs i use to watch temps which i never need to use by the way but i was sitting at 88-91C while gaming, this never happens.

So i done a fresh clean install of windows as it was due anyways but im still seeing the same issue.

Its a PC specialist build with their logo on the AIO, rgb lights are on the AIO are fine hence my initial reaction was its working fine.

Right now as i type cpu is sitting at 67C but even if i start a steam download it shoots up to 90C so something is definitely up.

I installed hwinfo earlier and can see the AIO pump rpm moving but i dont know if any liquid is flowing, even touching the cables its impossible to know.

Is there any way i can know for sure if its the AIO?

The cooler is a PC Specialist branded

PCS FrostFlow 240 Series RGB High Performance Liquid Cooler (AMD).

CPU is 7800X3D.

Mobo is ASUS PRIME X670-P-CSM

7800X3D runs hot under load, as the X3D V-cache limits heat transfer.

If you disconnect all fans in your system / use Fan Control to manually set them to 0%, it should be possible to hear if the pump is running.

Ill be honest i could never get my head around Fan Control in terms of making fan curves but i will install and do as you so say to set to 0 and have a good listen.

I noticed the cables connected to the CPU can rotate so i gave them a little wiggle and temps seem back to normal now.

It probably doesnt mean its fixed ofcourse but im wondering what the hell caused it?

Im pretty sure i can hear the pump now too, would it sound a bit like an old school HDD?

Just booted into Cyberpunk,Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 and temps are good again.

That could suggest a buildup of an air bubble in the pump, enough to restrict or block the flow. AIOs will slowly lose their fluid over time through slow evaporation. It doesn't sound like an old machine though, so it's unlikely but not impossible.

Thanks ill keep a close eye on it, im wondering if indeed the pump does die, id like to hear some recommendations for a replacement if anyone has any.

It potentially sounds like you might have managed to kink the hose enough to prevent or severely limit the flow so if it's ok now you are probably ok.

As for a potential replacement, it depends what will fit in the case. I know there's some new contenders but Arctic Liquid Freezer II/III are safe bets usually at a good price IF you have the space for them as they use thicker radiators (38mm while what you have is likely 30mm). If you don't have the space for the thicker radiator but have room for a 280 or 360 then you can care even less about how good it is as the extra area helps a lot.

Alternate idea is to get an air-cooler.

Thermalright Peerless Assassin Mini / Assassin King Mini are almost guaranteed to fit (135mm height) and very cheap.

Yes i did lastnight, probably hear from them Monday or Tuesday.

I had to RMA 16GB stick of ram over xmas time and they were very good about it all once i showed them memtest results.

I found a thread on r/AMDHelp yesterday of people with similar issue and one guy said to go into power options and edit processor power management - maximum power state to 99 from 100 which i have done and temps have dropped dramatically now and performance looks the same to me.

Ive downloaded lots of games this morning after yesterdays fun , played many to test temps and the highest ive hit was 74C with averages of 55-65 while gaming now, its actually a huge difference.

Temps rose again 30 mins ago so i double checked every connection is solid and the cpu AIO one [think it was aio pump fan] seemed to move very slightly under a bit of pressure but i cannot be sure how much.

Im wondering if the 4 pins be making contact regardless of whether they were forced home fully or not?

Also gave the cables of AIO a wiggle about and all seems ok again in games.

Im wondering if it wasnt a very slightly loose CPU AIO fan connector could it be thermal paste in the valves of the AIO? although i think its a sealed loop thingy.

If indeed there is no thermal paste in the AIO im stumped as to what it could be?

Ive never used water coolers before so im clueless here.

There's no thermal paste inside the AIO. It's direct fluid against the back of the coldplate.

The 4 pin fan connector may have some wiggle room, that's normal, but the connection to the pins should remain, they're a very simple connector.

I got fed up of random super high temps and having to give the AIOa bit of a bang only for it to work for a few days then rinse/repeat.

So i bit the bullet and stuck in a peerless assassin you recommended @Spear , that thermal paste was out of stock so i went with the NT-H1 version and so far so good temps are beter than they ever were even with the AIO working fine.
