In line with the annual, "Gigs for…" threads, where people post reviews and have general discussion about shows they see throughout the year, I'm starting this off, as we don't have one yet.
Was at frightened rabbit in academy 2 way back when. Great gig but I'm tall and even that was a struggle to see much. He did come out into the audience though.
You're dead right, was at Geese there a few years ago, the lead singer is about 6'5 and still hard set to see him
And those f***ing pillars 🙄
I saw the artists formerly known as British Sea Power there a few years ago. They had a giant bear wombling around the crowd. Pretty sure he was the only one who could see the band. Godawful spot.
Really enjoyed Limpbizits set last night, it was quick, no frills and all the 'hits'. The crowd were on fire for it. Only got in around 8 but the support bands didn't do anything for me and was disappointed in the merch. The host guy was absolute torture
Hopefully Dublin will get more 2000s era bands like Papa Roach etc
Next up is WrestleMania in Las Vegas
I was never a fan of Limp Bizkit but on the subject of Wrestlemania.
The Rock/Austin video package set to "My Way" is a work of art (WrestleMania 17 I think)
Yep it's a bit ironic having Limp Bizkit as my last concert before Mania
True it's a work of art, saw on Instagram someone was watching that video in the crowd last night
Last night’s Raging Speedhorn were great, nothing special, but I just love loud music.
Back to The Hut again tonight for two solo artists - Asa Nisi Masa and Mutiple People.
Both had a video projected behind them from a guy doing his Masters in Music Technology at Trinity. Took him a day, he said. When I asked him if he used AI, he got quite offended. It was all his own coding. Impressive. But I think he could achieve so much more if he tried embracing AI.
Managed to get in for the Whelan’s festival from about 6-10 at the main stage. Nothing special hit me I’m afraid. How mad is town on Paddies Day?
Enjoyed two fantastic purveyors of Celtic music over St Patrick's week(end), without an Irish musician in sight!
First up, Eddi Reader at An Grianán in Letterkenny on Thursday. First time seeing her live and a great introduction. Emotional and good fun even if the crowd was a little subdued.
Then on to a fantastic venue, Zeche in Bochum, for the last ever night in Germany for Oysterband. They finish their 'a long goodbye' tour with a series of gigs in the UK over the summer.
A fantastic night with the ageing audience shattering many German stereotypes.
After restarting the chorus chant of a finished song (having done the same earlier with another song), half the crowd started repeating the earlier chant. So you had a couple minutes of two separate chants being sung in unison. The band looked flabbergasted.
A very emotional and highly charged night.
Chatting to Ian Telfer afterwards and quizzing him about the absence of an Irish gig on the tour, he reckons they couldn't give away tickets in Dublin down through the years for some reason 😊
Possibly due to their similarly to the Pogues!
Anyway glad to have experienced them live on a few occasions and to have caught this show.
A final word on the venue. A real throwback, located in the middle of a residential suburb, with a 800 capacity. Speaking with the house lighting guy afterwards, he reckoned the list of legends down the years was incredible including Tina Turner.
A St Patrick's weekend to remember 😎
Went to see this lot tonight in The Grand Social https://open.spotify.com/artist/1iO4yRQP7nylDjGRzgWGj5?si=BDtt3VuST9esf45KoVa32A Except the band I went to see were incredibly loud and had songs like Fcuk Scum Blues and Devil's Dandruff. Anyways, they were great. North American Rock bands live by the sword, pissed as farts they were. Support were different - beekeepers/crossed with robots but they put 110% in.
I was also at this. I thought Dopethrone were good but i expected more. Thought they'd be any one of heavier/harder/dirtier, just possess a bit more oomph. Good but not great. The support act, Wallowing, i struggled with tbh. Normally i'd be all over their brand of noise/sludge/doom shenanigans but i found it to be full of empty posturing, surface flash and very little substance. They did look good though swamped in smoke, bathed in green light.
Happy Days Fest in The Workmans. The band with the face painted singer, I’ve listened to that song ‘I love dogs’ on Spotify before. Singer went mad in the mosh pit as did a couple of the band. Cool.
Spiritualized - National Stadium last night. 2hrs of extended swirling, noise, gospel, blues psychedelic jams. Excellent. First time in the National Stadium since M People 🤢 around 94-ish (my Mrs wanted to go … it was truly awful) .. not as bad as I remembered. Bass levels were too high for the opening song, but fine for the rest of the gig.
That was quality. Most enjoyable Spiritualized gig i've been at for a couple of decades probably. A bit more volume on the guitars at times and more intensity on the strobes would've been nice but they're minor issues. When the first brass stab came in on Medication i instantly got the spine-shiver and a big grin across my face. These Blues was worth it all on its own. I'd like to think Jason Pierce would have an epiphany and realise that playing psych is way more fun than boring ballads and continue on this trajectory for his next regular tour. He will not though. Anyways happy to do it all again in Glasgow tomorrow, not sober, sat in a comfy seat in a nicely blissed out state.
What a stinker of a crowd though. I moved around and could not escape the chats. Even up the front where you expect it to be musos they were yapping away. Please refrain from attending gigs you selfish, self absorbed, absolute f@cking c#nts of the highest order.
I'd have thought Spiritualized would have attracted a good crowd, that's annoying to hear 😕
Glad they put on a good show though!
Sorry to hear you were plagued with chatting fuckwits. Wasn't too bad were I was (yes there were some but unfortunately it's a regular thing at gigs nowadays to varying degrees). Agree with the strobes - would have liked more prolonged intensity.
Had a ticket to Spiritualized and woke up yesterday in a heap and not wanting to go! Dragged my carcass to the gig and buzzing today.
Really enjoyed it. Should never have doubted that it would be brilliant. Was standing but moved to the seats to let the whole noise wash over me while enjoying a few cans of beer.
I was wondering if he would commit to some of the psych stuff off the album totally but he did it with bells on and it was brilliant. Kinda just floated along with the whole vibe. I nearly went into a trance during Pure Phase. Loved it.
Medication though😎…So glad i went.
That's great that you really enjoyed it. Good for you. I wasn't there last night. But I really like the National Stadium as a gig venue. It's the opposite of fancy, but I like the relaxed vide. Buying a few cans or bottles in what looks like a makeshift canteen.
Pity your night was diminished by the chatty brigade. The last 15 years years has seen a steady increase in that shlte. Many people in their 20s and early 30s don't give a fu@k about people wanting to enjoy the music at a gig. Talking rubbish just to be heard. If they talked low, it might be bearable. But many of them purposely shout loud just to get attention.
Sounds great folks. I would have thought that if there's one gig that might be safe from the incessant talkers, it would be Spiritualised in the National Stadium. The band, the age profile, the venue don't scream event junkies or social media fiends. Nothing is safe I guess.
Really enjoyed Spiritualized last night too. Really brought that record to life. I was sceptical about the energy levels but it holds up. Crowd was okayish I guess. Wasnt as many talkers near me and very little back/forth to the bar it seemed, but I agree we couldve done with a lot more vol on the guitars. Jason's in partic was as muddy as worthy farm.
Top notch 20 min versh of Cop Shoot Cop to close was a real treat. Huge grin on J Spaceman's face at the end.
Double harmonica solos / dual-wield sax solos ftw.
Their last gig in the Olympia was the same. Possibly worse in fact, but it was a regular set on a Saturday night. For a fan this was a special gig. So maybe i was unlucky. Or perhaps i was too invested. I swear at one point though i was getting yapping in quad; front, back, left & right. Had words on one occasion but it made little difference. It wasn't just young folks either, people in their 40s/50s who really should know better. Now, Glasgow on Saturday night i'm expecting to be raucous and celebratory but i'm confident they won't be chatting incessantly.
@ Spiritualized - must of lucked out - no talking or beer runs around me. Two hours just flew by. I am starting to warm to the National Stadium - old school and basic but good acoustics, no wait for a drink and for Dublin reasonably priced.
I got a lucky spot. Everyone was fairly sound and bar the odd phone in my face it was polite enjoyment.
These Blues was great alright.
It wasn't a stand out track for me going in, I mean the whole album is deadly but the performance elevated that tune for me, song of the night.
I need to stay off setlist fm. Spoiled the encore.
"Born Never Asked" into "Electric Mainline" was worth price of the ticket. Proper throwback.
Rarely do you see so many of the oul lads in agreement after a big night out. Everyone so happy. It's like a big Men's Shed in here this morning. I'm delighted for ye. God bless Jason and the boys.
😅😅😅
Still buzzing this morning after that. Been looking forward to it for months and didn't disappoint. Crowd was good where I was. No chatting or coming and going from the bar.
Have seen Spiritualized more than any other band and that was up there with the best I've seen them. These Blues and Electric Mainline were sublime. Highlight was Let It Flow. Loved the lights when it came back in after the breakdown in the middle. I've never done heroin but I imagine it feels exactly like that song sounds
10 out of 10
Makes you wonder wtf Pierce has been playing at the past 25 years! Never Mind The Ballads indeed.
Judging by other folks experience i'm beginning to think that maybe my ears were just too attuned to any distracting influence. A few clips surfacing on youtube today for anyone interested.
I wore Loops during the gig which really improved the sound and partially screened out the chat.
Another thumbs up for Spiritualized here. Always preferred their spaced out songs and there are quite a few of those on 'Pure Phase'. Crowd was ok where I was. Hate the venue anyway but sound was pretty decent last night.
Was at Tindersticks at the Olympia last week and thought it was wonderful. 8 piece string accompaniment and a couple of lads on sax/trumpets with the band (who are tight as hell these days) made for a great night. Only one 'oldie' - 'Travelling Light' but a brilliant gig.
