After been guaranteed minimum 6.30 for cull cows next week once over 250kgs deadweight and fat score 2
I know a man that has a very large number of hex to sell, bullocks and heifers,7.80 flat he got
How many is a large number approx?
I don’t know exactly but he definitely had over 100
We must be on par with the uk price at this stage.
what factory
My butcher was telling me that most factories negotiate a winter & summer contract with the supermarket chains for the supply of beef. The factories have lost their shirt over the last few months on the price that was agreed for this winter & it's why beef hasn't risen in the supermarket.
He tells me negotiations are currently taking place for the summer supply & by May we will know by the rise in the supermarket prices where factories expect beef to settle at..
We are a long way short of UK price
what is it over there?
Nope
Factories haven't lost their shirt this was factored in and passed on to the consumer over the last few negotiations.
It has been well flagged the last 5 years (pre COVID) that the beef herd was shrinking and proteins across the world were in short supply. A perfect storm as such.
The only surprise that Irish processors have got is that they got going so long keeping a lid on prices at farm gate.
@epfff all I know is beef factories are a shower crooks but the supermarket chains are an even bigger shower of crooks & us poor farmers are at their mercy...
Factories haven't lost their shirt. The contracts are on a weekly basis, they might lose on the off week or a big contract haven't to pay a farmer for big load of aa or he in order to preserve a contract. They don't make money on supermarket offers but they make it up on the weeks where no offers are in in place. Again preserving a contract.
You don't buy a heath clinic or a commercial building by losing money.
Approx 8.40 euro equivalent but its not ideal for us to be so over reliant on the UK, when the UK gets a few ships of cheap South American beef we could see a very rapid drop we are piggy backing on the high UK price at the moment and hopefully it lasts
But going forward what do you think the normal base price will be?? Hopefully this UK thing lasts
The UK has pulled the SFI in the past few days which is their replacement to BISS. This is going to get interesting as to what Labour will do over there. Cattle numbers dairy cows have plummeted in the past few year. Less than 5 million cattle in the England
Don't know where it'll settle at the fact it has gone up so rapid is a worry we are not in a normal market, last week I saw a few very large feedlots buying cattle at marts but didn't think they were going mad buying
any 7 month men on here
whats the plan this year
You would imagine it should hold till the fall anyway,
Buy high.....sell low..
Right twist to be had buying cull ewes for grass and killing in 3 months with no meal..a lad just needs balls and good fences
I know a man who does it every year. He'd be a canny judge. Some of them turn out to be in lamb and makes a killing on those too.
Small scale operation here, would carry 12-14 animals over the winter and buy another 15-20 bullocks 475-525kg in April/May to finish with the few I have already. Fear is what are 20-24month old cattle gonna cost in the next few weeks when the 7 month lads hit the marts, reasonable to asume prices for these type cattle will rise further. I know how much I have to invest, so option is to buy less of what I normally buy or more younger cattle and sell in the fall as forward stores.
On the total back foot this spring however as the man who always bought cattle for me passed away unexpectedly after Christmas, so back to the ring in person to fight it out with the big boys ! They better watch out.
Stay out of the ring. Online is the only show in town.
Beware the farmer with the open chequebook.
I would second this
Oh for sure I'll be online. Pop in and have a look, ear mark a few and back into the van.
i heard about that man
those type men wont be replaced unfortunately
faces around the rings arent getting any younger
i hope the prices hold and we can all make a few pound at the end of the day
The mid 7s is ready available for the coming week even for a small finisher like me. I'd imagine the bigger lads are pulling more.
I’d say €8 isn’t far away for anyone with a decent number of finished cattle.
And to think it’s not that long ago you were holding out for €7
