Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

You know you are not confined to this forum and this thread, don't you? There are areas where posters can continue to discuss everything they want to, but seem too stubborn to. Preferring instead to complain about the moderators who are trying to keep this forum on topic.
This thread is for the Tubridy Radio Show. The fact that it has died proves that nobody here was actually listening to the show. Nor did they want to.
If anyone would like to start a "Give out about Tubridy" Thread nobody is stopping you. This is a large site with a forum for pretty much everything. Find a suitable place and start a thread if you feel that strongly about the need to complain about him.
This forum is the Radio Forum. This thread is to discuss the Ryan Tubridy Radio Show. Further off topic posts in this thread will result in warnings and bans.
It's obvious very few people actually listen to his radio show.
The man really is a busted flush.
You do know you're not allowed to comment on the moderators, don't you?
MOD: Enough about moderation and off topic posts. Please get back to discussing the Ryan Tubridy Show. Last warning on this. Any note off topic posts will get a warning.
So what's his show like these days? Is he still speaking way too fast for UK listeners?
He gave a couple of good book recommendations today. Gave a cautious recommendation of "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara. He really seems to have settled in well in the UK and has a number of side gigs going on too. Fair play to him.
Side gigs? Aimed specifically at UK or Irish audiences?
Like any music formatted radio station, VRUK follows a format clock. The clock is a pie chart representing allocated approximate time stamps for duration for music segments, announcements, promotions, ad blocks and presenter music links.
As the simulcast continues to tank in the UK, he has been told to restrict the duration of most of his allocated presenter links for the first 20 minutes coming out of the top of the hour and 20 minutes going into the top of the next hour, leaving a period of time of approximately 20 minutes allocated to extended links and interviews etc. However, time for adblocks are also allocated within this section of the format clock which leaves him restricted as to what he would normally do. This is a sharp contrast in comparison to when they seemed to have given him full control over the content and duration of ALL of his presenter links when he started in January 2024.
However, there has been little or no improvement to his presentation as he continues to consciously not finish his sentences which will irritate the UK listener.
They are attempting to clean things up by teaming him up with a producer to make the overall sound and presentation sound tighter. However, although this has been mentioned previously Tubridy is just simply not a natural music jock and it has also become clear over the past year that he has no intention of becoming one. Because of this his show would not be considered to be a credible formatted adult hit music show neither is it a credible light entertainment/book fix. It's in a radio no man's land and those VRUK listenership figures keep going south.
Thank you nonetheless for that concise overview.
I never understood how someone with such poor diction and pacing got as far as he did.
I had thought perhaps his current show which seems to be mostly a sort of continuity gig would be ideal for improving his presentation. If in the meantime I am accidentally exposed to his broadcasting I will post my thoughts here.
It is after all a radio thread specifically about his show.
Worldwide audiences. He had viewers from 103 countries for his live interview with Roisin O’Donnell on Saturday.
Well he mentions them on his Q102 and Virgin Radio shows. He gave a lecture at a historical society's lecture series a few weeks ago. Yes he had viewers from around the world for his Instagram live interview on Saturday. He stated this on his Sunday morning Q102 show. It was part of his Bookshelf series.
The beauty of the internet is it's global, so a wood whittling youtube channel can have viewer around the world.
Is the instagram page a Virgin Media page, or a personal acc? I ask because I've never used insta.
It was on his own Instagram page. Not sure if it was live on YouTube, but he uses Noel Kelly's account for broadcasting on there. Obviously is proving to be very popular. He has a bookclub on the new series of the Bookshelf and is part of his Virgin Radio show too.
How do you gauge that popularity?
Anyone can set up a youtube acc about anything and go from having 20 views one week and 40 the next which could be described as massively increased popularity.
Tubs is doing well in the UK now, really impressive to be honest. I didn't think he could do it but he has done it. And at the age of 50, you can't deny that the Radio show is going from strength to strength. He's there a year and 3 months now, I think he has proved his naysayers wrong, and I am genuinely impressed. Look forward to hearing, reading and seeing more from Tubs.
How is that success measured?
When you say "strength to strength" is that supported by any listenership surveys, or is it just your personal appraisal?
Yes, it is my personal appraisal I have been listening to Tubs everyday for the last year and months, his Sunday show is great addition to national audience in Ireland, while his Wyle Irish ways is moving listeners in the UK. His line up of guests on youtube is stellar.
I think he has turned a corner. I don't see how you don't see it.
Well I don't work in radio so I'm curious as to how radio stations measure how their presenters are fairing from a commercial point of view.
I love reading history books, but I can appreciate that that's not to everyone taste. We all have personal tastes, but I'm not talking about personal taste, I'm talking about how success is measured in the commercial radio sphere.
This is the radio forum.
Have to admit that I agree. It took him a while to settle into himself on Virgin, but he seems to have unleashed the old badass version that he was before he got the Late Late. I think that he was exhausted on RTE, especially after Covid. He obviously needed a new challenge and he really has met it head on.
You know thinking back on it perhaps his rapid speech and poor diction were symptoms of that exhaustion.
This shows why sarcasm and irony doesn't work on the internet…
I’ve been on a hiatus for a while now and in that time I’ve taken some time to give someone a second chance and reflect on my opinions on their show.
With that in mind I made a concerted effort on weekdays to switch from my usual piano-based background music to Mr. Tubridy’s show. Parking the cognitive bias and baggage I held I decided to listen anew to the host with an open mind and have found myself both surprised and delighted by the mix of light-hearted interviews, celebrity encounters, upbeat monologues, soliloquies and anecdotes from the host, all topped off with a cornucopia of delectable chart-topping sounds from my youth to present day. It really is a pleasant way to enjoy one’s morning. My only complaint would be there’s almost too much by way of musical interlude and not enough of the host. Going forward, I think it’s only fair to separate art from the artist (for example I still love “The Usual Suspects”, despite the affairs of Mr. Spacey) , and whilst I continue to have some cause for concern over “the scandal”, I’m big enough to admit I was wrong about Tubridy’s broadcasting skills. He really is a top notch broadcaster with a natural ability to make people feel comfortable in his presence and the conversation just, well, flows.
I look forward to my continued enjoyment of the show.
I think the fact that he's meeting a lot more West End and Hollywood stars has made a huge difference. He has upped his game with regard to recommendations of films and books. Obviously something has just clicked with him during the past year. He definitely seems revitalised and a lot happier in himself.
Reminds me of the time he discussed “The Death of Stalin” with Armando Iannucci.
It's strange to see so many opinions do a complete 180° swing, of course, if they flip again this will all look like trolling.
If anyone is being less than sincere and would like their post deleted and forgotten about please PM me, do not ask on thread.
his diction have really became perfect now
Well you have to tone down the accent for a UK audience, tbf.
Do you think they will give him a one off special Jacob’s award?
In all fairness, there was no issue with his accent or diction when he worked on the BBC before. And audiences used to Terry Wogan, Henry Kelly and Graham Norton would be able to follow him. It's like saying that people from Ireland cannot understand the speech of the likes of Lorraine Kelly, Alex Jones or Liza Tarbuck.
tuned in there today, not enough soul music for my liking but fair play to him seems to be doing well
