If you don't mind PC, the Expeditions series is probably the closest. Expeditions: conquistador was great.
My pc gaming days have been over a long time I'm afraid. Just remembered the Shadowrun trilogy games are supposed to be similar to xcom and i have them through ps plus, just give them a go.
Installed Hollow Knight on a whim about a week ago from the PS catalogue. What a game. Ori is beautiful but this is immense to play. Really enjoying it.
If only they would release Silksong. Hollow Knight was the first game I completed on my switch back in 2017.
I enjoyed Mutant. Played it on the switch ages ago. I like the free roaming until you get into combat and then it's turn based approach. Let's you sneak around and ambush enemies.
But very little comes close to xcom. Even phoenix point which I believe was made by the Original xcom Devs didn't do it for me. Started out great but there was Just too much going on with missions, base building and politics.
My Bioshock adventures are continuing. I started Bioshock 2 last night, and it's just as creepy as the first one.
Whatever you do don't miss out on the dlc. Far and away the best thing to come out of the series.
Infinite is safe to skip.
I won't. I got the Bioshock Collection for €9.99 about four years ago and only started playing them this year. Excellent value for money.
I wouldn't skip Infinite, I wouldn't skip anything from the Bioshock series, it's such a rare thing to have a series with all games and all DLCs being THAT good. I would say they are all brilliant even by today's standards, but today's standards are actually lower, we will not get another series of AAA games with such deep socio-political and philosophical story setting.
Probably worth taking a look at Bioshock Infinite for the excellent art but the combat and level design is really boring and basing the whole premise on a racist dog whistle is not ok.
Saying that, the final piece of dlc for infinite is actually really good fun.
Have you tried Classified '44? Kind of WW2 Xcom - five missions in and it's pretty decent - though one bug meant I had to restart a mission (plus on sale on PSN at the moment).
As stupid of a suggestion as it may sound, have you tried Marvel Midnight Suns? More of a simplified system and not fully as strategic, and there's a lot of fluff in the game between missions to help you level up characters which can be a bit labourious, but the core gameplay is actually a lot of fun and pretty well designed. Obviously it's a Firaxis game too so a lot of the underlying DNA from Xcom but without the shouty man who'd appear in the corner to give out to you for not saving a hostage THAT YOU NEVER HAD A CHANCE OF SAVING ANYWAY, DICKHOLE!
Ahem… sorry…. I hated that guy…
I inherited my brother old PS4 after missing a few generations gaming. Playing Bioshock 1/2 are up there with the most engaging gaming experiences I ever had.
Never heard of that, must check it out thanks!
I actually enjoyed that but found the downtime in-between combat an awful bore and i love marvel, going myself skip skip skipping as much as i could. The actually combat was a lot of fun though but i did really miss the tension of perma losing your crew although i know that wouldn't work in this game.
Xcom nailed that feeling of becoming attached to your squad and not wanting to lose anyone.
Yeah the stuff between missions I mostly found myself being on auto-pilot for; just going to each area for whatever training/upgrades etc. Skipping through most of the dialogue and then just picking whatever response seemed the most friendly. It was all filler nonsense. But the card combat was so good and missions really well designed. Xcom 2 just infuriated me most of the time but I probably b*tched about it enough times here already so won't again.
But yeah, f*ck that mission control dude in Xcom 2.
I got a great tip from someone on here when it came to xcom 2 "play on rookie". I usually don't play on easy modes unless I've already cleared a game but it was a game changer. It was still a very tough game, scraped through some missions but time limit never really impacted me so never found it frustrating. Really recommend rookie for anyone who wants to try xcom 2 or wants to give it another go.
Phoenix Point might be available on PlayStation, although it's really lacking in some departments. But it's definitely cut from the same cloth as XCom.
I found gears of war tactics pretty good. A long time since I played it though.
@Zero-Cool Nothing really comes close to beating XCOM. But did you play Xcom 2: war of the chosen? It's an expansion to 2 and makes it almost like a totally new game.
Xcom chrimera squad is an option too. It's a spin off and a bit more action and toned down on the strategy.
Of all the news of Gears coming to PlayStation, I'm really hoping Tactics makes it as I've heard great things but not sure if it's only new Gears games coming over.
Tactical Breach Wizards would be an easy recommendation here but alas it’s PC only. And apparently it isn’t great with a controller on PC, so a bit of work needed to get it in shape for a console release - though hopefully it’ll happen.
I think the current plan is just remastered collection of Gears 1-3. I'd say 4 & 5 (and maybe the Judgement spin-off) will eventually follow, but Tactics is probably the long shot.
Split Fiction a million sold in 48 hours. Anyone played yet?
I had a much different experience to most people with Death Stranding. I fell in love with it within the first hour. I also got hooked on the storyline. I find most big budget games dull as F, but this is one of my favourites of all time
I've just started chapter 3 and loving it. Absolutely bonkers and insane but loving the gameplay side of it. To me there is something therapeutic about the deliveries and I tend to think of them as a puzzle and how to find the best route.
The sound track and scenery is incredible. Makes the walking so relaxing.
Yeah it's really good. Only played the first 4 chapters but like the other games each chapter has it's own style and mechanics so it's always fresh.
Oh look at what has an 84% discount in the spring sale...
I've added it to my basket and will inevitably forget to buy until after the sale ends
Buy it now, unless you want to face Retr0's wrath 😉
