Priority at zebra crossings to be finally (fully) switched from driver to pedestrian.

A further update to the legislation in December 2024 states that in all instances, all vehicles must stop and yield right of way to any pedestrian who is waiting to cross or has commenced crossing the road at the zebra pedestrian crossing.
This change differs from previous rules, where vehicles only had to stop once a pedestrian had stepped onto the crossing.

This seems to be a DCC move only but hopefully will be nationwide soon. It’s a farce that pedestrians have to place a foot out under current rules and hope that a driver is polite enough to stop.

Now drivers will HAVE to yield. This is the rule in most European countries already.

Well the legislation change applies across the whole country.

What is new in DCC areas is zebra crossings without beacons, though other councils already have zebra crossings like that.

I would still recommend looking and confirming any traffic is stopping ....never assume you are dealing with a courteous, attentive or law abiding driver. Sad, but true!

They have them in the airport, a few outside Blanch SC and a few in Howth. Must be a Fingal CC thing as their almost non existent in the other three Dublin council areas.

I've no problem with the change, but it's also important for pedestrians to pay attention. A number of times I've stopped for pedestrians to cross at a crossing only to realise that they'd already crossed and had simply stopped for a chat and were oblivious to traffic stopping for them.

This is not the case in France or Italy anyway. Your statement at the end is false. In fact, Ireland and the UK are the outliers. Most european countries not only legislate that the right of way only applies when the pedestrian is actively crossing, but that is actually the behavior on the ground too - drivers do not stop unless you are on the crossway.

That’s still the case here.

But most Irish drivers still plow on and expect the pedestrians to wait for a break in traffic.

Why isn’t it the other way around? Why can’t drivers wait for a break in pedestrian footfall?

Every country I've been to in mainland Europe, all drivers will slow down and stop if you are beside the crossing, in anticipation.

I have never had a car drive right through while I was waiting to cross, except in Ireland

It is the case in France. Changed a few years ago and it made a big difference. Previously they'd nearly accelerate if they saw you on a crossing.

Drivers should have to yield to pedestrians at any drop kerb crossing point within a 50kph zone IMO.

If I'm coming out of my estate I will always let a pedestrian on the main road footpath cross at the junction before I approach - it's courtesy in my view.

I would say most drivers are ignorant though and don't do this.

Not sure about Irish road rules, but in some EU countries it's mandatory to let the pedestrians go at the junctions as you describe, even if there is no pedestrian crossing, because you would be crossing a pedestrian or cyclists path.

I don't know where you are but in SDCC areas I've yet to have a vehicle drive right through, most stop well clear and all stop once I put my foot in the junction. Red traffic lights and you are taking your life in your hands trying to cross.

Head to Rome for the weekend - you wait to cross at a pedestrian crossing, you'll never get to other side - just walk out and the cars stop - you get used to it after a while!!

there’s one right outside the door of my job in a business park. Shop and public transport is across the road so everyone in our business uses it. It’s not all the time but enough that everyone knows to be wary that cars plough through without stopping. I’d always make sure the car is stopping before stepping out, never assume it is. I’d imagine it’s just inattentive drivers as opposed to arseholes being aggressive but the outcome is the same.

If it’s dark and you can’t see then slow down. Your headlights, if working correctly will illuminate these signs.

These signs are ubiquitous in the rest of Europe.
