Hi all hope I'm posting in the right section here, I'm looking at importing a van from Northern Ireland due to the lack of 2021 vans here and the cost, The van I'm looking to purchase is a 2021 Renault master, it is a NI van from new and was first registered on the 3/6/21, where do I go to find out about vat vrt and customs costs, I'm not vat registered and the Internet is next to useless,

hi @User1998 you seem to have your finger on the pulse here so I hope you don’t mind me hijacking the post and reaching out directly

My husband is looking at purchasing a Hilux as someone with more space is needed for jobs around his father’s farm plus day to day stuff but he’s not VAT registered so it would be purchase a commercial vehicle and then tax and insure as private. The price for them here is astronomical…and we started looking at ones in Northern Ireland.

I checked on Revenue website re the VRT and with VAT paid on the purchase in NI plus exchange rate we’re looking at a saving of roughly €10,000 for same mileage and spec here.

What are we missing as I thought these days were long gone since Brexit?

You need to find out if the car meets the requirements to be imported to Ireland free of VAT & customs

So was it in NI private ownership for 3+ months, or has it been imported to NI correctly under the Windsor framework

If yes to either of the above it may make sense to import

It’s was sold as new in Northern Ireland and has been there ever since. It’s 3 years old. Anything I can find online suggests it makes sense but it seemed too good to be true due to the savings.

I can’t seem to find the cost to tax either, any time I enter the reg of any Hilux down here it says €333.

Do you happen to know how awkward it is to purchase the vehicle as commercial in NI and then tax as private here? Will I owe revenue here anything in this case and what is a 2.4 litre diesel to tax?

I think you just tax it online as normal. You mentioned something about a herd number on another thread, that should get you the cheap tax rate I think

Husband has a herd number but he would use the car at weekends also which we’d be afraid may render it unusable as it’d be personal use

If you want to use the herd number, just make sure to get the form, think it's a commercial tax declaration form, and get signed at the Garda station. After that you'll be good to go.

If its the 2.4 l engine to tax it privately it will be 1080 a year, Better off taxing commercially.
