Cable replacement Query

Little technical know how when it comes to this stuff so.......

Currently a brown cable that connects into my combi seems to be an issue for bringing in the terrestrial stations,rte1, 2 etc. it's an "old fashioned" one for want of a better one as opposed to the twisty/screw in ones on the satellite cable.

When I play about with the connections on this cable, opening the head, etc the reception returns and will stay for a few hours. If I cut an old piece off and replace the head, the reception returns and stays on for about a year or so. But then the annual, cable not working ordeal starts again.

I'm wondering at this point should I just get a new replacement cable? Although I'm unsure what this is called if I was to go into a shop to ask for one? I'd bring a photo but you know yourself. Also where sells these cables in person?

Terrestrial TV signal, for me anyways, comes via a standard coax cable from my aerial in the attic. You can get different specs of this cable with the more expensive ones being less prone to interference from electrical wires (I think).

That's looks like the one. I only need about 2 meters of it as it connects into a box on the wall and then into the combi.

Do the connectors need replacing also?

If you only need 2m a pre-made fly lead is probably more cost effective.

I ordered the male to male cable and it arrived today.

Zero signal coming through. Is there a different type of male to male cable I could try?

One I have is brown cable and silver connectors

Where is the aerial situated and is it coming down on its own feed.

I had a brown cable from the 70s and well outdated.

Does your box or tv have a signal strength meter to see what it says.

It's possibly does have signal strength meter if I use the ariva combi box correctly.

It's Def old school cable connection, about 10 years at least

This cable is for terrestrial stations only.

Aerial on roof I presume, deffo not in attic and the connection to that it to a white box in the wall behind the telly.

It's the connection from that to the combi is the issue.

When I used the white male to male cable above there was no signal

When I use the brown cable and twist, bend, turn connectors, the signal works for a while then deteriorates

there’s probably water in the little connection box on the aerial on the roof. Be degrading the cable over time if so. Check behind the plate on wall too. Some outer stands may have come loose or into contact with the centre core of the cable.

My Saorview signal has been deteriorating over the last few months.

My setup has a multiswitch and launch amplifier.

Having ruled out the above units by checking the signal before them I narrowed it to the aerial and incoming cable.

Took the aerial down this week and found the aerial to cable connection, the balun, corroded. Possibly installed 2012, around ASO iirc. (Correction, installed early 2008, recabled late 2012/early 2013 when I removed the old LP7 VHF aerial and combiner)

New aerial ordered. Same aerial but with F-connector instead of saddle & clamp. Hopefully a a more waterproof connection.

I think these strands on the wire are the issue.

I think I'm going to try and cut a new end.

For this, do I strip everything away and ensure it's only the core of the cable that's inserted into the connector?

I can cut the straggly wire wrapping??

No idea why it needed a new "cut" but seemed to have done the trick!

Strands should never touch the centre as must have been loose and not clamping it correctly.
