You mentioned We are Cavan overhyping Killian Clarke earlier, yet you’re doing the same with Ryan Donohoe, he has obvious ability but his last start at midfield against Roscommon, he was hooked after 20 minutes as he couldn’t live with the Roscommon lads mobility, and he was burned badly for pace against Monaghan by one of their wing backs for one of their goals.
He’s a potential option but he’s certainly not the clear answer to our midfield issues.
Tiernan Madden gone from the panel, anyone hear the latest rumour?
Yeah, heard that the Tuesday after the Meath match,Not happy with playing time….
There won't be to many knocking about come Tailteann cup time i reckon.
That’s a fair point re Clarke but Donohoe has to be given a chance and that hasn’t happened IMO. Midfield is a huge issue so we need to try and solve it.
I just find it strange that you’ve players from the same county setup and the one that starts and is vice captain for one can’t get a game ahead of a panel member from that setup on the other.
I would be in full agreement with you except for witnessing his play in a blue jersey last year. I don't know if he was carrying an injury or if the pace of IC football just doesn't suit him but he was so far off the pace it was scary. James Galligan too. Completely different player to what he looked like in the green and red jersey. Hopefully he can develop because he has the required physique but he can have no complaints on the chances he was given up to this. I still believe we made a terrible choice on managerial appointment but the midfield situation is probably one he deserves a pass on TBH.
I’m a big Evan Crowe fan and I think he will be a certain starter somewhere between number 2-7 come championship and I believe he did well from general playin the first half against Monaghan ,but he’s not an IC midfielder, he’s not strong enough in the air in my opinion.
The midfield options should be two from Clarke, McKiernan, James Smith,Peter Smith( whom we haven’t seen get much of a chance) Donohoe and Luke Molloy.
Galligan has made some strange and bewildering decisions at midfield during his tenure, Faulkner and Denn’s Oisin Kiernan against Tyrone last year, Gerard Smith and Tiernan Madden in the second half against Roscommon last year.. It’s a position we really need to get sorted.
Very tough position to solve. Smith and Donohoe look the natural fit on paper. Donohoe because of what we've seen of him in the past at club level albeit last season only middling. But he has shown nothing so far in the chances he has got at county.
Smith looked a rolls royce when he first came on the scene and the jersey was his for the next decade but he just has not developed. Probably regressed. Never the same since that bad knock against Longford.
The rest I don't know. Younger lads unproven. Gearoid may not have the legs anymore. Clarke similar plus his role would be more of a disruptor anyway instead of a dynamo.
I heard last night that Finbar Reilly has left the management of Arva. Hopefully it is to take up that role of full time Academy/Development coach with Cavan.
Unless people pressure has lead to that. Last I heard the position had been scrapped as I previously said on here.
Has it? Thought Kingspan are covering the costs of it? Mad if that is so
They probably swindled Kingspan into given the money anyway and are using it to buy concrete.
The closing date for applications was 24th June 2024 according to this:
https://ulster.gaa.ie/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/County-Performance-and-Talent-Development-Lead-Job-Description.pdf
I heard around the tail end of last year that the Westmeath manager wanted one of his own men in the job and the county board chairman wanted another. They couldn’t agree so the whole thing was scrapped.
I don’t know how true that is but given the closing date for applications was 8 months ago, we’ve hit an iceberg somewhere.
Not many changes on the 15, lot of switching on the bench though.
You're correct. The two are not related.
There is NO Coaching & Games department left—everyone has walked away, and now we have one employee with a veto over who gets hired to do a job he obviously isnt doing if he is getting someone else in. This just proves how toothless the County Board really is. Instead of fixing the mess, they’re too busy trying to silence a local journalist for stating the facts and telling them the uncomfortable truth.
Where is the schools coaching? Where is the full-time strength & conditioning? Other counties are investing in the future, and we’re becoming a laughing stock. We’re more focused on promoting everything except football, while our teams and players are being left behind.
The County Board needs to stop the PR spin and get coaches on the ground, into the clubs, and supporting our players on a consistent basis. We have surplus funds—use them to get things moving in the right direction!
Enough is enough. Time to demand better! No other county would let such a shitshow fester for so long.
Meath have just beaten Down which is a surprise.
I was very impressed with Meath against us. Were twenty points the better team. Huge midfielders and classy forwards and Donal Keogan.
Can’t see Breffni pitch being in good shape today. Large areas of it were cut up last week in the Ladies game and there’s been steady rain the last couple of days.
Oh mercy, that felt good. Hope that's a watershed moment and we push on.
Not sure how big a surprise it is. Surely new rules don't suit blanket defence merchants like Down.
Well done to the lads today.
I dunno, I hate to continue with the glass half empty opinion but Louth were poor. Great to see us score three goals, miss a pen and also have another stonewall pen turned away though.
Faloon for me put in the worst refereeing performance I’ve seen in a game we won since the 2020 Ulster Final. Dara Mc got abuse through the whole game and rarely got a free.
You’d worry for the form of Gerry Smith, Holla & Oisin Kiernan. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of them left to the bench and used as an impact sub in Mullingar. James Smith majestic at midfield. Now who’d have thought it!?
Great to be there to see two fluky goals secure the victory.
Ah that felt good. Fairly good performance today. Created a few goal chances, got a bit of luck but good to see some fight from the lads.
Realistically we need two wins and a draw to stay up. Westmeath, Down and Cork are all winnable games while Roscommon look a bit above us.
Watching Louth today, they could get it tough to win another game. Next week’s match against Westmeath is huge for Cavan.
I saw comments on FB that a Cavan player acted poorly when taken off, who was that?
Lovett went straight down the tunnel when took off.
https://m.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/westmeath-boss-blasts-new-football-rules-i-dont-know-how-lads-who-have-to-be-at-work-in-the-morning-are-going-to-survive-that/a1752250432.html
Lovett wasn't the only one unhappy it appears.
May have been more frustration than anything. He played 40 minutes, didn’t score and missed the penalty. He’s only 20 so his day will come hopefully.
just watched the highlights ,but fair **** on the two goals today against louth, great to see players with the bravery to go for it rather go laterally both goals were excellent
It was a bit of strange call to allow a young lad like that to take a penalty in such an important game, especially as he had missed a penalty in the shoot out in the Sigerson the previous week? Suppose easy to say that in hindsight.
