The Hyundai INSTER sub-compact EV with 355km range will be officially released later this month. It was teased today and based on the CASPER ICE model available in some markets. Thoughts?
Is it fine to be putting 2.3kw through a regular domestic socket for hours on end or should you lower the charge rate via the car to take some of the load off?
Losses likely double that, Bjorn tested AC charging on a Model 3 and it was 6.X% on 32amp and jumped to 18% on a granny cable, lower charge rate = higher losses
I used one for a few months before getting my charger installed. Used a dedicated outside socket (installed myself) piggy backed onto a little used circuit (bedroom) and it was completely faultless. The socket I got was IP66 rated with its own built in RCD, so was very safe.
Charged at 2.3kw which gave me about 28% of the battery (78kWh) in the 9 hour window from 11pm to 8am, so probably about 50% of the smaller Inster battery.
I've a two year old. The wife and I would have no bones about owning an Inster for lugging them around day to day. I currently drive an Ateca.
Because they all think they need SUVs. That's a big part in the explosion of sales.
Talk to parents of young children, they want them in a big car. Safety, space etc
so we are replacing our 2015 24kWh leaf with the INSTER. We also have a model 3. It’s technically a second car but in reality it’s capable of being your only car it has lots of space for 4 people and we have 2 teenagers. The range is in around 3 times the leaf and very good technology levels especially for the price. It’s a great package.
Why would it not work for people with one or two kids?
First ever car or do you mean main car?
I always wondered how insurance would be on EVs for inexperienced drivers, they are definitely easier to pick up speed than ICE cars.
Good luck with it, I watched nobbys YouTube review yesterday and I've seen a few others, hard to remember a car that had absolute universal acclaim and very few negatives. Car of the year levels of praise
Left hand drive demo in Dundrum.
The Inster will be my first car. I was originally planning on buying myself a 3/4 year old Peugeot 208 for around €17k which didn’t even have a reverse camera. So it really didn’t make sense to me to continue down that road (no pun intended) when the Inster came along. A couple grand more and it’s getting me into the ev market with a 2025 car and a bunch of modern features. Seems like a no brainer to me… and I actually love the design!
..
Where was the R5??????
I charged my Leaf for 2 years using granny charger and the outside socket. Charging output will be 2.3kw an hour minus losses (around 10%??). 9 hours on night rate will give it 120-130km worth of charge?
In fact, once I collect Inster, Leaf or Inster will be charged using granny charger while the other one will be charged by Zappi. It will depend on the planned usage for each car the next morning.
Would it be possible to add a centre armrest on the 42kw model?
Has anyone had any experience using a granny charger? I’ll be collecting my Inster later this week and am waiting to get a home charger installed. I’m thinking it might be safer to just use a fast public charger instead while I wait for my home one?
Who is the target market for these? It's not me so genuinely asking ......great reviews I've no doubt it's a great car. Some people here very sure it will be a massive hit. I just don't personally know too many people that would be into it.
Young people with no kids, I dont think it's stylish enough....won't tempt out of Fiat 500s or minis
People with kids, no way
People that have always wanted to go ev and finally have one at low price point to go for?
Ev owners looking for 2nd Ev ?
Buyers of the likes of a yaris normally?
Will be a really nice option on the second hand market in 3 years.
Really enjoyed the video. These are going to fly out of the forecourts once word spreads beyond the EV community. 400 will turn into 4,000 in a couple of years.
A really nice car, Hyundai have nailed it.
Might have been a mistake on the part of the dealership - the manager in particular was clueless and really not that nice. Salesman was very helpful though. Main charging cable comes with a nifity case too.
I'd say they will easily shift that number.
They are looking to get 1,100 in for sale this year
Can't be. Most expensive I've seen is about €350
Is that granny cable the correct price?
In fairness though although the Leaf has a good following the Tesla design wasn't boring. I remember first seeing one thinking why has it taken so bloody long to make decent looking EV. Now there's increasing choices and Tesla's looks bland, especially the interiors.
Tesla made EVs interesting lol no they did not. They might have got people to notice but interesting no. They are about as interesting as a tub of butter.
Fantastic. Tesla made EVs interesting after the Leaf and Bolt made them look dull. the Inster will do the same for small EVs.
Anyone can tell trying to park in Irish car parks is getting harder and harder.
The Mark 1 Golf was 3.7m long, the latest Golf is 4.3m!
At 3.8m the inster is like a reset.
I disagree. It's just dull black. The beige interior is much nicer and classier.
Oh a Commercial version should be interesting. Might make a handy small little van.
To 'Digitaldr' You say 'It comes with a regular and a granny charging cable, two towing eyes and a puncture repair kit.'
When I went to a dealer I was told it only comes with AC cable - you can buy a granny charge cable for an extra 1100 euro
I was also told it has V2L via an adapter into charge port.
Can others who already collected their cars confirm if the Inster comes with the granny cable as standard
Thanks
Hopefully will answer some motorway queries some of you had, brighter interior than the other video I made too.
The car barely made an impact in Jan as there’s almost 200 being registered this week so it sort of missed the typical Jan window. Hyundai Ireland also suggesting the car price will increase after July but anyone who orders now will get the car at the current price. Another batch due in April with more cars becoming available quicker after that.
I asked about a third trim option and for now, having just the two meant they could get more cars quicker with a simpler trim allocation but it wasn’t a hard no.
A commercial version has also been confirmed for Ireland today built at the factory, not a local conversion.
Thats what I was thinking and also n o cupholders in the back is a disappointment.
