Its annoying because if you change your location to another country it lets you filter the make, model, year etc. Maybe that update will make it to Ireland eventually

Lads,
I need your help asap. Timing belt in my 03 Passat snapped. I now have no car and I am in dire need of a Bangernomics. I am in Mayo. Please help me with suggestions. Thanks a million !

Car that will outlive us all?

The (former?) motors forum favorite?https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-octavia-1-6-tdi-elegance/38864935
I'd pick the Octavia, the Passat looks like it's enduring a hard life and the gorilla is just too old for everyday use.
I'd agree. Much as the heart would want the corolla, for the true modern bangernomics you need the skoda.
Thanks folks, Any other suggestions ? I am willing to travel a bit!
Thanks a million.
Soo, you are aware of the bangernomics charter, sub €3k and roadworthy with valid NCT.
Your 03 Passat was a family sized diesel and pre DPF? Do you still want that size of car and to stay with diesel? or would a petrol do?
Post or pre 2008 (tax change) which can have big cost implications ?
Diesels from 2007 -ish got DPF's in order to meet stricter EU emissions targets, they are a nuisance. Familiarise yourself with what having a DPF equiped car means?
I would consider anything. I just need to get moving. I am begging for lifts lol !
If I was to have preferences, it would be diesel and post 2008 for Tax.
But i would consider anything.
I have 3 cars here sitting blocking my driveway and all of them with NCT but I'm only driving one!
I keep telling myself I'll get rid of one or two and then when I get them through the NCT I hoard them again🤣
They're all 20 years plus, so all will be on the old tax system, a 2004 Audi A4 Avant, which I bought from a fellow Boardsie here in 2019 and drove until 2023, and which has driven 68 miles since April 2023 to and from the NCT centre twice, a 2004 BMW X3 (been driving this one for last 2 years and is still my daily driver) and a 2005 Mini Cooper which I bought in September to scratch an itch. I also have a motorhome and at this stage I'm hardly able to fit them all and I recently decided I'm going to HAVE to downsize!
If any of those are of interest, drop me a PM and I can send on details and pics etc. I'd prefer sell them to a Boardsie rather than deal with the endless "life stories" on the phone if I advertise on Donedeal or Adverts etc
Skoda Superb here in Ballina. NCT to October '25. Same size as the Passat and it's a 2010 so insurance should be no issue.
€2,350. https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-superb-2010/38772021
There's three more Skodas here for sub-€4K with a minimum of 6 months NCT in Co Mayo
https://www.donedeal.ie/cars?price_from=1000&price_to=4000&make=Skoda%3Bmodel%3AOctavia%2CSuperb&fuelType=Diesel&NCTExpiry_from=now%2B6M%2FM&sort=priceasc&area=Mayo
That's a perfect choice, and cheaper road tax also than pre 2008 cars. Looked at a Superb recently and the amount of rear room in them is just ridiculous, I think I read somewhere that they have more rear legroom than the S Class Mercedes! (See pic 5 on that advert)
Karl is fairly economical with his description and photos, but for a grand…

That's a lovely looking Superb I don't think the 1.9 had a dpf either, mileage is a bit high but they're well able for it.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Let me wade through these suggestion !
Not a very long test - but these avensis are extremely reliable.. my avensis just went through the test last week after replacing a €25 tie rod.. I find these avensis brilliant

If buying something in hurry it's hard go wrong with a petrol corolla or avensis for two reasons:
1. They're extremely simple and reliable
2. You will always sell them on for above the average scrap value no matter what condition they're in.
just be sure to check for rust and gearbox noise.
Sell your Passat as is. Young fellas are mad for them. What colour it is, the condition of the bodywork, whether it has a sunroof, whether it was a 130bhp and whether it has a six speed box will all impact heavily on it's desirability.
For example an immaculate blue six speed 130bhp sport with a sunroof is still worth good money even with the engine gone.

There's just far too much shite to wade thru. These humdingers cropped up for me today...
Now the Merc looks tidy, but sounds like it's fcuked....arrived on a trailer and has no log book. 4.2k please!!
Great car for very little money. Not the ideal family car obviously. Asking €1,950.

They have the capability to use filtering. If you move your location to another country (Try Germany or Holland) on the map in marketplace you can filter by category (including car/motorcycle/truck/boat etc), and year/fuel/transmission etc as with any other auto classified site)
"1.8 frugal petrol engine with supercharger (Kompressor)"
Nice car for the money, I have the next generation (W204) C class with same engine, love it, but I wouldn't call it frugal 😃
Haha yeah I have an 07 w203 c180 kompressor so one just like the ad and I thought the same lol.
Great car though and I like the supercharger rather than turbo. I've had mine since January 2020, bought it for €1250 at just under 180k km and it's approaching 260k km now. Biggest downside for me is that it there's no Isofix in mine and that's led me close to getting rid of it a few times as it's a pain not being able to bring the kids out. Can't bring myself to do it though as myself and the previous owners (two members of the same family) have looked after it very well.
You got it for a good price. Although I suspect this one could be bargained down a bit. They're getting rarer and rarer now, at some point they could well become a classic.
05 1.3 Mazda 3
Test till September
Two owners, current one since 2008
Low km's on the clock
Looks very clean
Asking €1000
That looks like a really genuine car.
Seller has only 1 active advert and 4 adverts historically.
Car is on Limerick plates.
Was taxed for a full year the last time it was taxed.
No daft story about how great it is or how low the miles are etc.
The subtle parts of that advert suggest to me its a very genuine low mileage motor.
I'd be on that in a heartbeat if I was looking for something.
Very well priced. Great find.
Gotta love the creative description of this 2012 Renault Megane diesel automatic.
260k kms
NCT up this month.

Renault Megane Diesel and Auto. I'd rather walk, because you would end up walking most of the time if you owned one of these heaps of shite.
131 v70 with test for peanuts!! Anyone brave enough?!
In the time it took me to post this the ad changed from Abbeyleix to Nurney. Still, 1100 quid!
Gone!!! That was quick 💥
