I misread by 20 miles- it’s still bollox for 2025- consumers deserve better than this pile of sho1te
There are plenty of cars with >45kWh batteries. The market actually needs smaller cars with medium sized batteries and a reasonable range. The price would be the main factor. Doesn't say, but if it's around €30k then you may have a point.
Priced correctly I think it makes sense, loads of people don't often leave a 100km radius of their home and this would suit perfectly.
You're into low 30s for the likes of an ID3 pure so has to be much lower than that.
It looks reasonably ok too.
194 miles is about 310kms so take 75/80% of that and you're looking at a 230 to 250 Kms real world range for this on average. Knock another bit off for motorways though and it's around 200 Kms max distance for long drives before charging. Makes intercity driving in Ireland from Dublin borderline manageable with one charge but it's not aimed at that market.
Not for everyone but will suit many.
Bigger battery coming for those looking for longer range
The smaller battery version seems perfectly good for most people, and could do well as a second car where the primary car is preferred for a rare long journey. More than enough for the average person dropping kids to school, normal work commute to/from work, picking up a few bits of shopping in a town and going home. At low €30,000s, it could be a great option for a lot of people.
Before folks switch over to BEV they are usually obsessed with range, and then after a while with a full EV they realise it's nothing really to be concerned about.
That reminded me that the worst anxiety I've had about range in a car has been a number of times I've had to pull off a motorway to try and find a 24 hour filling station at night because I'm not going to make the next motorway stop. Both here and abroad.
That's real range anxiety. 🤣
People need to change their mindset about range in cars. You get a smaller battery, you carry less weight, you pay less money. You want a 100kWh you pay for it. It is a different way of looking at cars I admit, but electric cars will actually give people the option of only paying for what they need / regularly use. Irish people are obsessed with the idea of an electric car doing 1,000kms for some absolutely bizarre reason.
That bizarre reason being that they don't ever want to stop, but will keep going with white knuckles on the wheel (and bladder) until they reach their destination.
Spanish Prices just announced at the European Launch in Madrid. Getting to drive it tomorrow. Irish prices will be announced at the Irish press launch in a few months.
When I was looking for a new main car I was looking at the A6 etron and I would 100% have gone for the smaller battery version saving a big amount and spend money on S Line or nice wheels or whatever, in the end even that was still much too expensive for me so dropped the idea and the car i bought only has 1 battery size so no decision to be made there.
My next change won't be for a few years but will be for 2nd household car and I'll be getting a smaller battery version of something like a renault 5, cupra raval, or whatever else is out at the time and is stylish and good value.
You're in a great position having spent time with loads of cars @MarkN , what would you buy with your own money? Youve mentioned you have one at home for the family stuff didn't you?
Does not look that cheap or is that because of the EU Tarifs on Chinese cars. If it's that price there surely it will be more expensive here or are electric cars here cheaper than in other European countries?
30k for the entry model, rising to 37.5k for the premium model. Considering the Atto 3 and Seal are in the 40k-50k bracket I'd say it's about 5-7k too high
I can see many comparisons between the highest priced Atto 2 to the lowest priced Tesla Model 3 and not see much value in the BYD offering
A lot of other European countries still have very good subsidies on EVs but it does vary, looking at the Tesla Spain website the base M3 goes for about €1k less on the road so I would conclude Spain is a cheaper country to buy an EV in but not by any substantial difference
I agree. I think at that price the Atto 2 is too expensive. BYD are still mostly unknown to mist of the Irish car buying public so thet really need to be offering better value than this to get there name recognised and to get buyers into there showrooms and buying there cars.

I was speaking to a BYD dealer the other day. He claims the Atto 3 and Seal are selling like hotcakes. Apparently the deliveries from BYD can't happen fast enough for him to keep up with orders
Anecdotal, yes, and no actual cold hard figures given but I think the brand has definitely left the "unknown" space, which is great going in the space of a year
Nissan Ariya in my house. No particular reason just follows a long list of Qashqais. I was trying to encourage looking at a few other brands but in the end I wasn’t listened to, no change there.
The running costs are the big thing for me, topping up at night for so little is just so simple. I was quite interested in the idea of an M3 but the trade in hassle before and when you’re done with the car in a few years just wasn’t worth the grief.
Elroq is probably too small for our needs but again that was of interest and also changed last July so it was never gonna be here. My parents have one on order though.
Love the ID.7 tourer also and i5 tourer, probably two at the top of my electric dad car list.
Yeah i was impressed with Ariya when I went car shopping with my mother looking for a micra, less impressed to find out she couldn't buy another micra but that's life. Wasn't there to look at it but it caught my eye, nice high spec one and it looks very well.
ID7 was up there for me too, it made the shortlist just missing out.
Friend of mine interested in Elroq so glad you were impressed by it since you've had a go in most of them at this stage.
Well When Nissan either goes bust or gets bought out by Renault you might just get your wish to buy something else next time ye are buying new Mark.
