Major contraction of Subways in Dublin and elsewhere too. I think people just got tired of them and so many new brands (like Zambrero) have come out since. I went from having one Subway every week or fortnight about 15 years ago to probably just 1 in the last 5 years.
Can anyone tell me the story with O'Connell's on Eyre Square, why it wasn't open when I tried ten minutes ago?
Closed for the week I think, they were trying to use up what was left in the taps on Sunday.
There was a Subway in Oranmore as well that's long gone. I think it was less a problem with Subway or their food and more just sheer amount of choice that entered the market and complete over-saturation on Subway's part.
I used to eat Subway somewhat regular especially when they had the footlong for €5 after 5pm but now it'd be once every six months at best, but I do still enjoy the sandwiches.
There were ones in Gort and Loughrea as well. Wonder if it was the same franchisee pulling out in all of them.
Too many outlets but also there have been changes in attitudes towards places like Subway over the years. They're very 2000's and we're in 2025 now.
Tuam had one as well up to a few years back
They have a planning application in process for a significant expansion into neighbouring vacant units so I don't think they're going anywhere. Probably just taking the opportunity to switch to a more popular franchise option for their food offering.
Are there any plans for a post office in Knocknacarra pop 22k?
Is the one in Tesco (formerly Joyces) not still in operation? Or are their limited services available there that force people travel further to avail of other services?
This is what they have
I'll give an example, if I miss a letter/parcel the postie leaves a 'missed delivery' note and scrawls a random P.O. in town/Salthill. Also you cannot bank, social welfare, passport, etc etc
You'd think at this stage, there'd be plans for a new branch
Do you not have to walk half way to Claregalway to collect a missed parcel anymore?
No, the public gave negative feedback, AnPost agreed it was unfair. Now missed deliveries are thrown to a random post office, unsure how the postie decides
….good butchers…Joyces….does not compute
I was giving negative feedback for ten years when I was living in town but the feckers wouldn't do anything about it.
That's an improvement anyway.
Sure go for it:

Been like that for the past number of years - pre covid anyway - they tend to drop at your nearest post office, which usually works better than the main sorting office out the Tuam road.
LImited post office offering in Tesco Knocknacarra, both Post Office in Rahoon and Salthill offer full services (Rahoon branch particularly good for parking)
You mean the Westside Post Office?
If there was a Post Office in Rahoon at perhaps the Gateway Retail Park (which is in the townland of Rahoon) - then zell12 problem might be solved here. Only a 1km walk between Newcastle Post office and Westside Post Office.
One would have thought the KING could have delivered on this one? Didn't he work in the Post Office before getting HIGH OFFICE?
Aplomb Clothing back the West is closing in the next cupla weeks, as per their Insta.
Kappa-ya closing for good, Feb 2nd.
47 years on Market Street
That's a real loss. I loved the variety and authentic specials on offer there. I wish he had had an online click-and-collect service, as I'm often in town running errands. I wish I worked in the city centre as I would have been a regular.
I used to go to Kappa-ya a lot, but after Covid the place started to look cluttered and manky, I don't think I've been there since 2022. The katsudon was great though.
Quay Street Kitchen are also closing according to their Instagram.
Looks like Evergreen are looking to get out of Westside too. https://www.daft.ie/commercial-property-for-rent/unit-7-westside-shopping-centre-seamus-quirke-road-newcastle-co-galway/5982217
Not surprised, it's always quiet any time I go past. Honestly think these premises have high potential to do really well if it's the right business. Population in the area has and will continue to increase, much less anti-social behaviour as well.
The Evergreen outlet at the Galway retail park is also not that busy.
Lidl opening in Claregalway. Whereabouts is that going to be?
They put it where it would cause the most traffic carnage
