If you're dealing with the same buyers for years there's no problem. Set your price, load the calves and off they go. 10 minutes.
It is when there's a market for them alright. Obviously people have relationship's built up with private buyers over the years. There's a fella on YouTube dower house farms. He buys dairy beef off a couple of farmers. Basically said he might have to pay a little more but hopes farmers remember who took the calves other years and wasn't going to pay silly money.
you better believe it. I know a guy gave 32k just for slurry spreading for 220 cows. Everything contracted out inc feeding.

150 acres of silage at 130 is nearly 20k. 10k wouldn't spread much slurry. Would i be wrong saying if he's getting everything contracted out he's not doing too bad??

I suppose there's minimum labour hired in then in that situation 🤔.... but still it starts to make the outlay on the machinery seems reasonable

it’s hard to know really. Me and him were talking about it. Between what machinery repayments we have and the time spent driving them plus the time not spent doing other jobs/ spending time with kids it’s a significant amount of money too

Not many sticks around the mart here, I haven't sold an animal since before covid, so just drop and go. Sell subject. Sher you can carry a banana in case you get a hunger pang.
In all serious though around here in West Cork there will be thousands of calves born each week from now on, not many buyers.
10 minutes max. Lads have calves pre ordered. We arrange a time. Have calves out and in a pen for loading when they arrive. They know the story around here.

In fairness old lads nearly 80 have to be fed too, a couple of slices of mouldy bread and a bowl of cabbage soup should keep him alive while he's dropping off the calves

You're totally missing the point though, the fuel, time etc all adds up doesn't matter who's bringing them. 10 euro to a lad to bring them seems cheap. I'm sure there's been plenty of trips were the price has been way lower
I dont know anything about this farm but the amount of farms put up for sale that arent legally ready for sale is a disgrace.Banks have to be happy and if your borrowing you have to pay there solicitor.
I had my own old lad drafted in for a bit of freezebranding today. He had a right laugh with the branding man. He's sending me a bill for bank holiday rates.
Young lads around here just drop at the mart and go or pay a haulier. The old lads like mine love going in for the social side. There's a phone call then every evening on mart day with a "mart report" and he'd always be in great form after it.
Breakdowns can be costly too
Plus you need plenty cows/land to get enough use out of any expensive machinery.
I doubt I'll be buying a trailing shoe for my 50-60 cows here.

I'm a year older this year. Might bite the bullet and get parlour pit mats. Are they all the same. Easy fix, parlour paints? Someone told me the alfco ones are away softer?
