IMO I don’t think tubing every lamb is a great idea. Tried it here and stopped again. Unless you are meticulous about cleaning the tubes and syringes there is always a possibility of introducing some bug. Mostly now I pen up the ewe and lambs and leave them be. If a lamb hasn’t sucked in a couple of hours I’d help him out. Often drifted off asleep with my head resting on the ewe while giving a lamb a feed!
I'd agree, we feed the ewes well and use a good bolus a month out from the lambing.
The lambs are lively then and up sucking quickly
what bolus do u use a month out wrangler

Hi all, just wondering how much is people's cost of production per lamb scanned.
Last year I scanned 220 lambs from 120 ewes.
Costs were about 2,000 euro for concentrates and hay/sillage. I had a good run of fresh grass, (very dry ground) so I lambed all outdoors.
I remember thinking that worked out at a cost of roughly, 10 euro per lambed scanned.
What would the average cost be from scanning to lambing??
ah yea i give them their one before they go out with the rams. Find it very good. Don’t like hassling ewes this close to lambing though.
Scanned ewes last week. Got a great scanning. Don’t know the final % as the count wasn’t working on his machine. But looking at the marking I’d say it’s around 1.9. happy with that.
They'll be in for their pre-lambing vaccine any way
do you find thats a better time to give them the bolus? or is mid way through gestations better to give time to absorb in minerals like selenium and iodine that make them lively at birth? lively lambs at birth sure defenitley leave lambing easier. on the beet, yes i heard its a great feed after lambing when ewes are lactating , would people thoughts on using it instead of a ewe nut after lambing? do many feel the need to feed much in way of a nut after lambing if tight on grass?
Re beet after lambing. Feed whole out in the field and sheep just help themselves to it.
Less chance of miss mothering then when feeding meal
Opinions please:
I have 4 lambs/hoggots left to sell. 3 are 51kgs and the other lad is 40kgs.
Would ye sell them together or sell the lighter lad on his own.
I'd sell the 3 together and 1 separately.
The light lad is either small or underfinished, either way he'd spoil the bunch.
Light lad is actually a twin of one the heavier ones born late. He's in good condition just a smaller lamb.
What's people's thoughts on this for a 19% ewe ration to feed ewes?
its ok, but soya bean needs to be up at no.1 or 2 if you want enough quality colostrum if feeding pre lambing
I was thinking that. This supplier had a better ration last year. At near 400 a ton I wouldn't be overly happy with it
that extra €20 or €30 euro a ton could make all the difference if it has better ingredients, only an extra €200 or €300 over 10 ton. if it stops a few lambs getting scour, watery mouth or joint ill, its well worth it in my opinion
This would have been their previous 19% crunch. Is there much difference in soya meal hulls and soya meal dehulled
The soya meal dehulled is what people mean by soya. The hull is the shell and a good fibre source.
huge difference. Hulls are a byproduct. That’s a much better ration than the previous one. If the rape seed meal was taken out, it’s would be a super one
Yea that's what we fed them last year and sheep done very good on it. I'll get onto the supplier today.
You need to keep an eye on ingredients. That supplier was the best ration last year but I'll have to compare it with others in the area.
What do ye think if this nut ?
if they dont milk on that one you make give up 👌
who’s is it?
is that a Kiernan nut?
It's Kiernan
Yes
How much a ton is that
€430 as buying in small bags
Thats not dear. That mix I'm buying is 420 in small bags and it's not near as good
