KK will only have the same squad to choose from next week the good news is Mullen, donnelly, scruff,tj,phelan and Tommy Walsh all nearing a return and mackessy injury isnt as serious as initially feared. He would of being a big help today . Richie reid got injured in the warmup. When new comers are given a chance they have to take it but dunne, hogan, drennan have being there a few years now. Connellan and eoghan lyng are different and only starting out.i also can't understand why marty Murphy isn't getting a look he would bring something different and kk need something different.I know he is with the u20 and they're playing tipp this weekend. Like wexford today there was a much better performance in galway after poor performances last week. It was very obvious when the team came out they made 9 or 10 changes. The big failing of not finishing out games was evident again today. Galway let a 8 point lead slip before kk gave away a few tired frees to give them a deserved win.Kk didnt score after eoin codys goal on 27 minutes. We knew there will be bumps in the road when trying to blood lads but one point between hogan, dunne, connellan is poor. How is it that kk can no longer produce a foward? Eoin cody was the last player and that was 4 or 5 years ago, thats why ya couldn't get too excited with the likes of chaps in kierans or cbs because we have a proven track record of not bringing them onto u20 let alone senior. Kk have started all four games very slowly, you would hope its all aimed for later in the year but I'd have my reservations when it comes to s&c.Galway were very sore after last week and hit kk hard. The scoreline maybe flattered kk because apart from mossy 7 points from play we just couldn't make the ball stick. It would be no harm to get someone into corner back because mikey Butler isn't going well. Seen that mini game with the subs and no one there with them. I watched that match again and the ball going in is 70/30. Galway gave in much better ball to their fowards. Kk are driving in defenders ball for the fowards. Obviously conditions etc were poor but the quality of ball going in is dirt and has being a long time. When it's all said and done it will be easy enough pick the team. It will be more or less the same team as last year. Granted zach and moylan got knocks but these 2 along with dunne, connellan and hogan all the newcomers hoping to move into the team were all replaced. Kk have no other choice but to try a few lads.
I think the OLG group need a break after 24 months of continuous hurling. They looked tired in July 2024 v Clare, in the Kilkenny club championship and today. A break would help them refresh for the championship.
Happy to see us give responsibility to Mossy and Cody. Hope we continue to give league game time to Tallis, Moylan, Zach, Mackessy, Dunne, Connellans, McDonald, Drennan and Shine. They need respondibility to grow. We will get relegated but we need to develop the new players and dtrengthen the panel.
Galway and us are very close; they should have won more 2022-2024 and Michail O'Donoghue will inspire them to win Leinster as he did today. They trained to be sharper for today; Kilkenny didn't bar Mossy, Cody and Kenny. We looked sluggish. Lawlor & Butler didn't look like the All Stars they are and Paddy D couldn't have maintained hos outstanding 2024 club form. So please rest them now as we did with the Ballyhale boys.
I had heard the same so was surprised today when commentator said he was back, any word on mackessy injury?
I thought he was after signing up to a Sydney team.
Obviously not, maybe he was just training with them to keep sharp.
According to South East radio he arrived back in last few days and trained this morning with Wexford players not involved against Tipperary. So I would not be shocked to see him.
Chin won't be back for a good while yet.
Kilkenny can't seem to put a team to the sword and are very slow starters.
I wonder what Cody was thinking looking on today 🤔
Forgot to mention Shane Murphy he is looking good, he attacks the ball and uses it well, give him game time and he could nail down a place
Btw P.M. o Sullivan made a good point in the programme about Kilkennys running game in that they do seem to get caught up in the tackle a lot rather than moving it wide to a runner. It might just be that it stuck in my head but I felt in the game it did hold true.
Not a great performance but got plenty of new guys time. Thought most of the damage was done out the field. The midfield and half forward line gave their markers way too much space. Lee at 6 for Galway gave an exhibition, he was always in the right place and supported his colleagues. Very disappointed with Paddy Deegan, nothing seem to go for him, feels like we are moving him around to shoehorn him in somewhere.
Cian Kenny has to be midfield he covers so much ground there. I'm finding Eoin Cody very frustrating, all he wants to his take on the whole defence to score a worldie of a goal each time, he doesn't have the pace to get away. Eoin pop the ball over the bar or recycle it and take the man on when it's one on one or there is a chance. His decision making is shocking, he needs to look at Mossy who keeps it simple. If it's on he has a go if not he recycles or has a pop.
Didn't go for Dunne, Zach or Connellan today, moylan was exposed a few times but had some good moments. I'd like to see him get a few goes. Thought Harry Shine although was not spectacular he got on the ball and hopefully we see him Saturday.
Our lack of pace is worrying we have nobody who frightens defences and can make backs nervy or as another poster said open up space for others. TJ, Mullen and Donnelly as good as they are won't bring it and Billy Ryan has it but isn't using it well.
I still don't think our puckouts are much better to be honest it might change when the ground is harder and they show us a plan. The trajectory of Tallis puckouts are better but few going over the line or over the head of receivers. The good thing is Tallis has the game and the tools to pull it off. If we get working on a plan with movement in half forward line that allows half forward running into green grass Mullen and Mossy will be worth few more scores than we are getting but that will be for later in the year and it's amazing we still haven't managed it over the years. It's not a change the goalie and it all falls into place. It needs more work.
Blanchfield is doing plenty of good stuff at 6 and needs every minute there to master that position, he had to take his man down for the second goal but he was skinned for it but he will learn from it.
This team really needs to develop a meaner streak, we don't really have any enforcer and can't think of any either. We have become a team that let the opposition score numerous scores without reply which is a dangerous trait. We also work hard to get back into matches and them take the foot off the pedal, happened today and it is not the first time.
Nothing sure but Rory O Connor and Chin will be back next Saturday and it will be a humdinger, hopefully Derek keeps trying a few mixed with experience.
On we go anyway and it's a pleasure to see Mossy burning it up at the minute, it's up to the others to follow now.
Lots of criticism of the ball in but to be honest, even adjusting for the heavy conditions which suit backs, and allowing for some poor striking the first touch of our full forward line was piss poor and left us under pressure. Missed picks, ball to hurl not hand etc and the counter attacks from deep killed us. If you’re playing as the out ball then you’ve got to make it stick like a magnet. Further more Galway had a sweeper that, rather than try to engage, Kilkenny just tried to play around. I wish we’d go 3 up if we’re going to play it in. And 2 up when we’re going to run or defend. Galway just played a Wexford style running through the middle on the counter and long range strike and we left them off at it until the second half when there was a noticeable upping in the workrate.
I watched our subs in the mini game and it was pedestrian to be kind. So signs were not great and it should be a point of coaching detail to have someone stand over them and get them to an acceptable level.
Another point is we saw none of the attacking from the backs that we saw in Clare. I wonder was that deliberate. I thought Moylan was picked to allow Butler to go out, but whenever I looked Mikey was in the two at the back. The point Mackessy won against Clare last week when we were under the kosh was not seen today and I’d argue it’s a footballers point (not making a point about with Mackessys derivation, more to do with our natural of understanding of movement up the field). Btw games now seamed yo be refeffed such that any shout of pulling and dragging is allowed but if a lad flops on the ground it must be a free. Badically junior B.
I thought Shine was a welcome relief when he came on because he actually looked like he knew how to control a ball, even when tackled by Billy Ryan. He should have drove that ball down into Langtons instead of the tame finish though.
Hard not to be very disappointed with the performance today. Mossy, carey amd Shane Murphy when he came on did well. Midfield out of the game for the whole first half. At least he is trying new lads but I think he will have to revert to type come championship. Maybe Harry shine or gearoid dunne might stand up. Not sure why marty Murphy wasn't named on the panel today. He might have caused harm in the galway full back line. Surely we need more steel in around the rucks. Very poor at times today. Our strategy in their puck outs was crazy. Leaving them all the time in the world to work the ball forward. Ball wasn't sticking for us. Another few tough weekends to come amd hopefully by the end of the league we will have a solid 20/22 players that we can stick with.
Mackessy a huge loss for KK today.. his physicality badly missed
Disappointing to lose having gone ahead with Cody’s goal and seemed to have all the momentum.
To be fair Galway’s first touch was better in bad conditions and they seemed to want it more than our lads and fought hard for every ball.
We seem to have to have to work very hard for every score compared to Cork and Limerick last night who are both very good at working openings for a man in space, Mossy was excellent again today but he often has to kill himself to win his own ball and then put it over the bar with the odds against him. We don’t get too many handy scores.
I’ll take the positives that we worked hard to get back into the game and good showings again from McDonald Blanchfield and Tallis whose distribution and puck out is very good.
Well done Tom mullally, another great result from a excellent manager. The door should of being broke down to get him involved with a kk team.
Wait until about 55 minutes in as that's when we started to play a bit!
Watching the match again and the ball the kk fowards get is not even 60/40. Anyone who didn't belive me about having **** video analysis all you have to do is look at the ball going in this has being going on years.Surely to god they can see the ball going in is awful. Kk are a very poorly coached team
Drennans confidence is on the floor. How did he drive that ball wide. Shine was greedy alright. We had billy ryan and Harry shine running into each other. Yes it's very early but another dreadfully poor start. Stamina has being a big problem the last few years.Only for mossy it would of being much worse.
When we had Shine and Drennan on come crunch time they could not win a ball. Where is "For Change" who constantly criticised Mossy and Joh Donnelly, 2 of our best, haven't heard from him in a while
we probably tried two new lads too many. Shane Murphy hurled well when he came in. We never pushed on from the goal and that was the winning and losing of it.
tom phelan,tj,donnelly Tommy Walsh were all doing a bit of training after the match. Eoin cody isn't a natural free taker but they've no choice only leave him on it and get experience. Galway were so much hungrier than kk.
Tom Phelan long term injury.
Today showed how important it is to have Mullen and j Donnelly in the forwards everyday
Cian Kenny and mossy were class
Moylan did well at times bit naive at other times but the more chances he gets the better he ll get
Mac Donald did well again he looks physically able for senior hurling now compared to 2 years ago Anyone know has T Phelan retired or taken time out we could have done with someone like him playing today
Is it worth watching on tg4 deferred coverage?
Disappointing to get ahead and not see out yet another game. I can't understand how they left butler macgoughlan after getting 2-2 from play. Movement again desperate up top along with the brutal ball going in. That ball billy drennan drove wide from 20 yard was catastrophic. So connellan, dunne,Hogan all taken off.galways midfield blew kk out of the water. Shine was very greedy going for a score that wasn't on but they definitely may keep looking at him. It's all about building a panel for the summer but when 3 of your new fowards are replaced it's not great.
disappointing, but not the end of the world
Could easily have won it - left some big chances behind Pitch was very sticky, which made it difficult to play any hurling
second Galway goal was a real sucker punch coming just after we blocked down their keeper - too many got sucked into the ruck and Galway went straight up the middle
Mossy was excellent again
Shane Murphy played well when he came on and hopefully Derek gives him a proper run in the team now
Still looking for forwards that can contribute outside mossy and Cody
Shine and Billy Ryan did enough when they came on to start the next day
Need John Donnelly back asap
Glad to see Cody on the frees - we’ll need to move on from TJ eventually, and he’s the logical successor
Deegan has being poor today but butler has being very poor a long time now. Kk fowards have being brutal. Galway swarming kk All over the field
Paddy Deegan and Mikey Butler are very very poor hurlers
It's being more than poor its scandalous. This isn't a league thing this is every year that's why kk need a coach
Mossy keeping us in the game with 5 great points, not mush else from the rest of the forwards but the ball in has been poor
Mikey Butler getting another roasting but again the delivery of ball is absolutely scandalous. That's why kk have being crying out for a coach. Only for mossy it would be some scutching at half time
