There's more to life. 😎😝
if your milking proper cows they are worth 1800 after being milked that morning
but then wait icbf will penalise these cows with minus 20 for carbon index yet they are the most efficient converters of dry matter intakes
On an international proof these cows are the most environmentally friendly cows and effecient feed converters yet icbf won’t recognise it
they might be doing better than you think. Keeping costs down. Low meal and fert bills. No rented land, no maize, no beet, no zero grazing.
That was the story here 15 years ago.But I had the father (73) keeping the plank in place behind the cows.We had changed from3' to 2'3" spacing. The cackhanded ignoramus and his incompetent bufoon brother barely put the machine together and shot out the gate.He would promise to do everything on Chewsdayy.Once yourself and cows get into the routine of things it will be easier, then just watch the dosh roll in. "This time next year Rodney"
I always like a few fat cows to sell the end of Feb or March.
A few thousand in spring, when fert bills and milk volume is only rising, takes the pressure off.
It also shifts my tax into a new year
If you're selling them every year in Feb you're paying the same tax regardless
ah I’m only jibing. Do what ever suits yourself. Everyone’s different. I know lots that sell them in early September once they’re scanned too
it’s not all about output Stan. I’m in a very good discussion group and I wasn’t the most profitable despite having the highest output /cow. Now I was in the top 1/3 for profit but I wasn’t the most profitable
Keep a few pound together
Wouldn't be too hectic on alot of kpi s myself but the one barometer I ve always focused on is keeping the farms current account strong.i ve always looked at it like a temperature gauge on a vehicle-if its low you re business is not preforming and is under pressure .
truest words ever spoken
Ya, It really is that simple. Alot of those KPI's are often just discussion points and manipulated figures and barefaced lies. Alot also depend on your stage of life and farm development.
Personally, I am disappointed if there isn't a thousand a cow left in the current account at Xmas with all bills paid.
On seeing that, €350/acre is a very poor rent for good land, hopefully solar panels will bring competition to the market
You are a fair greedy bastard,do you begrudge any man so that makes profit considering most land rented is not grazing platform
Milked for a friend years ago and he use to calve most of the autumn heifers before the cows, would have a fert pallet to put in and the chain across to stop them thinking of turning back, worked very well and just took a little extra time.
busy week on the farm
Passed tb test and spread a few loads of slurry
Ha a lad in yesterday with umbilical on a tracked Claas Challenger. Some outfit to spread slurry. Would float on water. Cleared 2 yards in the day. Slurry from 260 animals.
some way to move slurry
Did all the silage ground 4 lads drawing to the umbilical in the field
you’re not wrong there re stage of development. But I don’t agree with lads telling barefaced lies. You’re only codding yourself at the end of the day. I find it beneficial to see each year where I could improve on the previous year and to compare with others. Would say the figures from my own group were very honest and accurate
Don't take any notice of figures that some lads produce I know of a prominent farmer that was always producing milk cheaper than anyone else and appeared highly profitable along with taking every weekend off and taking several holidays during the year After years of hosting farm walks and telling everyone of how low his costs were eventually lads copped on and started demanding to know what was the real hired labour figures and real land rental costs, real fertiliser costs, i think that ended his farm walks.
Anyone know where I can get meal independently tested?
England apparently
Oldcastle labs
It's very easy to spot a bullshitter they don't be long about tripping themselves up
Fully agree we now have a new poster boy that claims that he only puts out a small amount of nitrogen yet his fields are glowing green he says clover is growing his grass but yet their is urea being delivered to his yard fairly often and the tractor and fertiliser spreader are constantly spreading some magic product from February to September every year its so easy to see through these lads
can never get why some get so hung up on comparing with other farmers …pure pointless exercise …far too much variables going on beteeeen farms for any accuracy …stage of development ,loans ,labour ,family labour parents to support etc ….its only after everything is accounted for and the balance in your account at year end is all matters ….sr ,weather etc will dictate meal, fertiliser etc on farm from year to year
A prominent poster on twitter put up some post re beastings and allowing calves get it from cow ,quality of it etc over last few days ….some people love making simple things complicated …..some farmers get far too hung up on all this crap and change things just for sake of it
I'd say the slurry is floating on the water this morning after the rain we got last night.
This why there'll be a requirement for more slurry storage per cow soon.
we had a serious spell of weather 2 weeks ago …weather dry ,ground dry and soil temp 6/7 degrees yet some experts advising to hold off ….same happend last spring ..we as farmers need to start using our head and don’t take advice as gospel …..so called experts are over complicating simple straightforward things ….for what
weather here in east Meath is perfect
disagree
there was a difference of 1300€ profit/ cow between top and bottom ppl in my group. It’s very valuable for the ppl at the lower end to see where they’re underperforming on it.
