Rejoice, spring has arrived!
Yep. Mother nature the only one who can tell you it's spring. For me it's sticky buds on trees.
Discussed in today's Irish Times https://www.irishtimes.com/life-style/2025/02/01/when-is-the-start-of-spring-this-contentious-question-might-be-what-truly-divides-the-irish-and-english/
Ya know, maybe 2000+ years ago when the druids were dancing bollock naked around a dolmen, sacrificing someone’s first born and reading the entrails of a slaughtered goat in order to predict the future, it might have been warmer.
They wouldn't be doing that today.
They'd be inside with a nice cuppa and the central heating on, chatting on Boards and saying how it's so bleedin cold outside.
😁
I'm with you bud, down with science and all the malarkey. Let's go with druids and stuff.
Could care less myself but we were 100% told in school in Dublin and elsewhere that February was spring. The reason being was the pagan/celtic calender.
Yes, we were taught in school that spring starts on 1st Feb.
However, if that is the case, then August is in autumn.
Whereas schools are closed in August for summer holidays, and many people take summer holidays in August.
Also, Met Eireann consider Feb to be in winter, and I agree, given the possible temps, and the chance of snow.
Note thst the Brits consider 21st March to be the start of Spring.
Well, I can only say that neither my parents or my teachers ever said that Spring was in February where I went to school.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Always thought it was Feb 1 too but was informed today by the more recently educated 😉 that it's still winter.
We will know when it's actually spring though, the air will feel better. Nit the damp grey gloomy stuff of this afternoon.
Protestants?
Well I'm the opposite, I couldn't…
All things considered, I'd have 15th February as the 1st day of Spring if it were my choice. By then the weather is noticeably better usually, and there are signs of Spring in nature and with the increasing daylight hours.
Usually by the 15th August it is starting to feel like Autumn, with leaves turning brown and the weather cooling.
Aside from the so called indian summer we regularly get in September once the kids go back to school?
We probably average more snow in March than February
I would pretty much agree.
I've always thought that the seasons don't really align with calendar months. To me Feb is split between late winter and the start of Spring, May likewise for late Spring/early Summer and November late autumn/early winter.
February is false spring.
Dont fall for that scam.
But what's your favourite season?
Jesus.
Nope.
"Beast from the East" occurred on 22nd February 2018. Just sayin.
First o March is Spring for this poster...I heard that the Trump chap had signed a decree to that effect ?
Wha... ?
February is spring if August is Autumn. It was linked to growth periods back in the day no doubt.
These days we have thermometers.
Narl! August is Summer....September is Autumn.....that's it !
Bitter cold yesterday and pissing down.
LOL "spring".
Why do people see the seasons in line with hotness? I see it as the growing seasons. Buds are appearing on some trees, shoots for flowers appearing. The ays are getting lnger and the growing season has begun. That's all I care about.
Call it spring or winter if you want. Strange to think someone would consider he beginning of the growing season as part of winter, but who cares?
Why do people see the seasons in line with hotness
Because temps aid growth.
Next month when the temperature gets into higher figures there'll be more growth…hence spring.
Right now we're coming to the end of winter (thank fu*k), even if there are some buds starting to appear.
That's very confused. It's about growth, but not the first month of growth, spring starts only in the second month of growth.
I don't get it. I find people have strong opinions but dont have great reasons for their opinions on this topic. Tail wagging the dog.
It's not confused at all. Higher temperatures means more growth. Fu*k all grows in cold weather.
TBH, I don't particularly give a sh*te if someone wants to say a winter month is spring myself. March, for me, has always been when spring arrives. If someone wants to say its the 1st Feb, they can fire right ahead.
In the northern hemisphere, it's only in this country you'll hear that.
I'm after googling it in the Northern hemisphere it's the vernal equinox -/+ 20 March that is the start Spring
I dont disagree with that. Fcuk all starts growing in February which makes February the start of the growing season.
This is what I was saying. People have strong opinions on this and weak arguments behind them.
Has it occurred to you that all parts of the world don't have four distinct, obvious, clearly defined seasons which are naturally 3 months long? And maybe Ireland is one of those parts?
