Looks like this development is getting the green light. Will be handy for NUIG students
https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2022/11/08/dunnes-fails-to-stop-student-accommodation-scheme-in-galway/
Signage in the car park saying 'spaces to the rear'. Also a PP notice dated end November erected at boundary wall
Dunnes staff get 22% of car spaces - how much do the other business staff get?! How will they police the no car spaces for students/tourists?
The development will result in the removal of 94 spaces from the carpark, leaving 238 spaces – although Dunnes Stores have said that 52 of these are for staff use and not currently available to the public. There will be no carparking for tenants of the student housing — but 212 bicycle spaces will be provided. https://connachttribune.ie/small-reduction-agreed-in-size-of-seven-storey-building-for-westside-carpark/

Will be interesting for sure how it plays out. They will need to have workplace travel plans for staff. They have removed about 1/3 of those 94 car parking spaces currently I reckon and this will increase as the ground works expand for the foundation works.
Went past earlier, ~50% carpark cordoned off with metal barriers
The works are expanding SIGNIFICANTLY so - only a matter of time. Hope the build is quick
Divillys closed and gone, Evergreen going now too, loss of parking is a disaster for the shops during construction which will take a year.
Think the bigger issue for Divillys was the dust from the building work. The open plan frontage would have made it hard to keep out
Heard on the radio when they surveyed the car park it was in 2021 during covid (everyone told not to leave their house) so of course there would be empty car park spaces 🤷🤷
Think the owners missed a trick here not making the ground floor a new retail space for Dunnes, allowing them to redevelop the entire 40 year old site over time
That would have been very clever.
There's 40 odd years worth of litigation involving Dunnes and their landlords in various shopping centres that suggests that such a proposition mightn't be the easiest course of action.
i think a good example of that is the galway shopping center….. that was supposed to be re developed but went down the drain when the objections from those on site today.
Dunnes in Westside owns the premises; they're not leased. They plan to create new parking at the rear and new access into the store from the rear, too.
On a side note, one of the driving instructors told me that the Westside Driving Test Center is actively seeking new premises elsewhere.
I'm not sure I understand https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/103430/westside-shopping-centre-galway
The centre went on the market in 2018 with a price tag of of €9.6m, sold in February 2020 for undisclosed sum.
and
Anchored by Dunnes Stores (41,000sq ft), the freehold scheme provides the key retail offering to the western suburbs of Galway city and has the benefit of some 280 surface car parking spaces. The Dunnes Stores unit, along with some other units, have been sold off on a long leasehold basis. The shopping centre currently produces an annual net operating income in excess of €750,000, with approximately 40% of the income secured by national covenants, including: McDonalds, Maxol, BoyleSports and the Driving Test Centre (OPW).
I haven't been to Westside Shopping Centre for a while. Can anyone confirm how many parking spaces are left at the moment? I read that there are extra spaces provided at the rear but does this make up for the lost spaces?
Has any poster actually parked at the rear to do their shopping and did it mean bringing the trolly all the way around to the front again?
Now where to go west of the river to a butcher?
This many spaces
Dominick St is west of the river 😉 https://hickeymeats.ie/
Was at the Westside Shopping Centre this morning. No vehicular access past Hehirs Bakery, builders and security staff directing each car into spaces and operating a one-way system thru cordoned off route back to entrance/exit. Over half the spaces inaccessible today and this will be managed on a rolling basis depending on stage of the works. Haven't needed to park in area to rear of building, yet.
Mortons in Salthill (opposite Kellehers Garage) have an excellent Butchers counter, was also there this morning. Give them a try.
Thanks. I did not know they were there. Only problem is parking. I can't just stop and pop in. Another poster mentioned Mortons in Salthill. I had always thought there was a pharmacy there. Will give it a go.
There was also a butcher in tne Dunnes Stores complex on Headford Road but it came and went surprisingly quickly.
Butchers are shifting online now. No point in paying ever increasing bills for having a physical shop
Unfortunately Morton's in Salthill is also on the market, so may not be there much longer!
I see. i popped in recently. No price list whatsoever to be seen.
The three shopping centres in Westside + Terryland + Galway SC Headford road, all seem too low density to me.
By that I mean they should be higher.
You know that Terryland has a 2nd story, and that lots of the units in it are empty?
Ditto with the top story in Corrib Court and Briarhill.
Youre talking about Terryland Retail Park, he's talking about Dunnes Terryland. You then mention Briarhill which he doesn't and Corrib Court doesn't exist.
If you need to check the price then you shouldn't be shopping in Mortons. :)
Lovely shop though with top quality goods. You know you've made it in (Galway) life when you're doing your regular shopping in Mortons.
100% - built in a different era. That Headford corridor badly needs to be retrofitted.
You're right: I meant Corbett Court.
Either way there is a demonstrated lack of demand for retail above street level.
And much of the Headford Rd strip is built on bogland. Going up would be very expensive, if it is even possible.
plans were in place to re develop the GSC, but Pat put a stop to that and possibly Tesco. Majority of tenants are stuck on yearly leases, in the event they get all on board.
Its not an engineering problem. Already are plans for going up(only needs to be 5/6 story's to be HIGH Density) - see plans for the Dyke Road Car Park https://corribcauseway.ie/
Westside Driving Test Centre moving to the Clybaun hotel next month
