Re-Scam thanks you for your money. This is the intention I reckon.
For sure.
Tbh, I'd like to be the same and just give up at this stage, but considering I go through 4-8 cans a day I'd be throwing away quite a lot. Once I can get rid of this habit and find an alternative that isn't in cans/bottles, I'll be done with the scam.
Ripping open bags and throwing litter about isn't cunning, it's cun something with a tish at the end, not cunning.
Hang on there officer doofy! According to CEO Foley on the radio you're obviously some kind of imbecile who "doesnt want your money back".
Speaking of which. They announced with great fan fare that 900 million bottles and cans had been returned.
But no details on the amount of product eligible for the scheme that had been put on the market in the same time frame.
Given the producer pays them either 15 or 25 cent for each item that is put into circulation these figures should be easily and readily available.
They just need to look at how many millions they have on deposit and reverse engineer to get a pretty accurate estimate.
Every 100 million products is roughly 20 million Euro taking 20 cent as the average.
So if they have 100 million on deposit that means (roughly) 1.4 billion eligible products were placed on the market, plus whatever on existing stock.
Again though these figures should be readily available, or am I missing something?
Definitely hasn't made an impact in rural areas esp along busy roads which would be too dangerous for people to go out walking on. Urban a but cleaner as there are some people who will pick up items out walking. This seems to be the case in my locality anyways. I noticed the snow week seems to have been a good week for flytipping by a minority
Hassle having to manually enter a barcode. I've had it reject barcodes, only for the machine accept them. And had it accept barcodes, only to have the machine reject them.
I've currently have a good system to have everything accepted, even cans that don't have a deposit charged.
I'm just too dumb I guess. :D
You have to laugh. The CEO of our national DRS stating that anyone who doesn't engage with Re-Turn "doesn't want their money back". Its farcical. Any decent interviewer would have pulled him on it and half a dozen other examples of BS. These sweetheart interviews are little more than Re-Turn promo.
Yeah, he's right, it's 15c for most products, had a heavy few over christmas, made a little over €8 back when I brought them to the machine at the start of January from a shop that set me back over €200
Honestly I perfectly understand those that don't want the deposits back
You perfectly understand nothing.
People dont want to engage with this DRS.
Thats not the same as:
those that dont want the deposits back
Deary me.
I would like my deposit back, but after hiking to the nearest RVM, I get a voucher for 60c, what am I meant to do with it? Buy 30 penny sweets? I'd have to put more money with it to buy something I might actually use, ultimately costing me more money.
Fíorscéal on TG4 had an interesting programme on the plastics industry earlier. Worth watching. It's probably on the Player.
My mate saves his empties and at the end of the month throws them in at his local SuperValu.
Takes the money and throws it on a gift card. At Christmas he had just under €150 on it. Was happy enough as it more or less covered his Christmas shop.
Think I'll do the same thing year.
Saw a girl on Instagram who walks her dogs in the country. She reckons she'll easily gather enough empties to pay for some if not all of her car insurance for the year!!
So every month your friend gets about 12 euros back in deposits?
He goes through 83 empties a month?
I've always maintained that the DRS(Deposit Return Scam) is a pain in the h01€. I was in Aldi, returned some empties but forgot to use the DRS receipt at the tills. So I went into my local Aldi last night and tried to use it, but was told no, I can't use it. That I have to return to the original store to use it.
I said to the guy at the till that it's a DRS receipt from Aldi, that's insane. He agreed with me, said it's an ongoing issue and hopefully there will be a fix at some point next month. The original store is miles away in the next county. Couldn't tell you when I'll be back that way. 🙄
People shouldn't be discouraged by seeing deposit containers discarded. Think of the probably one billion which have come back even at this early stage in our scheme. In Germany with a 98% return rate, there are still enough for pickers to earn some money.
Research internationally has shown that countries with no DRS schemes have much higher rates of can and bottle littering. For example Spain's beaches have 13 times more that Germany per kilometre surveyed. (2014).

"It’s a source of income, so you will see homeless people looking through rubbish bins in public places or asking people on public transport for their empties,” Dr Walsh added. “There are different opinions about that and whether it’s something that should be encouraged, but there is an acceptance of it. “You see signs asking people to leave their bottles beside the bin so that a homeless person can take them. That’s what a lot of people do when they are on the move and don’t want to carry a bottle around with them.”
Meanwhile in the UK, they may be catching up, but there have been many delays in the past. They will use the same not for profit, polluter pays system pertaining elsewhere.

Northern Ireland’s Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir said:
I have ambitious goals to protect our climate, drive green growth and reduce unnecessary waste. The creation of a Deposit Return Scheme plays a key part in delivering those goals. The introduction of the new parliamentary regulations is a significant step in that process and signals our commitment to move forward together to make those ambitions a reality.

New legislation for England and Northern Ireland has now come into force, enabling the appointment of the scheme administrator – known as the Deposit Management Organisation – in April 2025. This will be a not-for-profit, industry-led body responsible for the administration and day-to-day running of the scheme.
That's easily done in fairness. I average four cans a night plus a couple of bottles of water every day.
Yeah he buys bottles of water for his kids school lunches as their water isn't great. Plus he drinks a 2 litre bottle of water at work every day himself.
A member of my family drinks 8 cans a night 5 nights a week.
The other 2 nights he goes to the pub.
Bit of good news, the receipts don't have an expiry date so hold on to it.
Another tip Tesco will accept receipts in any store irrespective where they were issued.
Panda putting prices up. 25% increase on the green bin. As usual in Ireland, the consumer gets screwed.
Has been happening for years.

I have the cans when I come back from the pub.
Why is there only a single machine in the entire country that you just lash the bag of cans in to it and it sorts through them? It's like the retailers are not arsed with having it a major success in their particular store. If a petrol station in Newcastle, Dublin can finance such a machine it's well within the budget of the multiples to have at least one in every branch they have.
Possibly because if people bring back a huge amount of returns it's likely they will just cash them out for money. However, if it's just three or four Euro worth it's more likely they will spend the refund in the shop and come back more often.
Its a pile of shite. Should at least be able to spend it in any stores.
Because if they allowed that in every shopping centre, the ahem, unscrupulous of us, would lash in a bag of empties, and just leave behind the rejected ones which the retailers will have to clean up and have to pay to dispose of.
I can even imagine people stealing peoples bin bags out of their wheelie bins, throwing the bag in in the hope of getting a couple of euros back, and the machine getting clogged up. I can't imagine unclogging it to be a fun job!
There have already been unexpected consequences of this scheme/scam.
More of a bottle person mesell...but happy to report a recent visit to Dunnes Stores recycling…deposited a generous amount of cans …all made the journey without incident and Tull had just stroked a nice little earner.
Happy daze..
