News just breaking on this today - thought it worth a separate thread as it’s not fully clear yet what the full implications for ROI viewers are.

Content is moving to TNT but there will still be only four linear channels.

Not yet clear if this means TNT will now be available on discovery+ here, but if not surely will cause issues in ROI.

So more news:

From today, Discovery+ in Ireland is discontinuing the standard plan, and all sports content will be removed on 28th February, when existing Standard plan subscriptions will end, that will leave TNT (through the Sports Extra pack on Sky, Now and VM) the sole WBD sports offering in Ireland.

This is incredibly bad news for RoI viewers - while it was always clear TNT was going to be the continuing offering rather than than Eurosport, ROI viewers are being left, for now at least, with no on demand access. That will be fairly problematic when the next Olympics come up, as we’ll only have access to “front channel” content unless something is sorted by then. In the meantime, as six channels merge into four, ROI viewers are inevitably going to miss out on content. It seems Quest will be used as a sort of overflow channel, but inevitably they won’t be putting any of their best stuff there.

The hope would be that when the current Sports Extra deal ends on 31st July, TNT will be allowed to market through discovery+ after that.

I get discovery+ twice a year to watch the Australian Open and Roland Garros, I already subscribe to TNT so won't cost me anything extra. You don't need to pay €30/month to get TNT, check the NOW TV thread in the bargain alerts forum here and you should pretty much always be able to get a sports extra sub for €10/month right now. Whether that price changes or not when more content gets added to TNT remains to be seen.

Absolutely, deals are available.

My concern is more and more content will be on Discovery+ and hence not available here.

There is the possibility of using the still about TNT Sports 5-7, but they’re only available to Sky customers and Sky is depreciating the red button (they’ve replaced it with Sky Sports+ for their own content) and I’m not convinced they’ll be around long term.

As I say the hope is a renegotiated sports extra deal gives ROI access to this content. Hopefully it will be long sorted before the next Olympics.

Yeah but from the end of next month it won’t have any sports content in Ireland unlike the UK where it includes TNT Sports content.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but since everything had gone to streamers I just watch less and less tv.

I just find finding programmes to watch such a pain in the rear — have an Apple TV box, but even just the thoughts of having to scroll though multiple apps to find anything decent.

Was never a big fan of box set type viewing and just finding I had all these €10.00 per month subscriptions hanging off my bank account for services I maybe watched one show on.

it’s at the point I don’t even turn on the tv anymore most days.

The tier that includes TNT, Premium is not.

Additionally, from 28th February, the tier that includes Eurosport, Standard, is also being discontinued, and most sports programming will be removed from Discovery+ in Ireland at that point.

That will leave the Basic tier, with no sports programming (apart from perhaps a small amount on Quest) the only tier remaining for Discovery+ in Ireland. If you want the sports content that up until now is on Discovery+ you’ll have to take Sports Extra.

They even make it sound like good news that people have to pay more to access content on Eurosport UK/Ire.

PR ....the art of delivering bad news, or lying. They did/could not just say 'shutting or closing for UK/Ire, instead 'it's integrating',

IMO, this is also code for them saying they cannot get the return on investment for the current TNT rights, so must bundle in less expensive sports to get more people subsidising content they over paid for.

Having one home for all sports is not customer focused, it's WBD focussed.

I have Sky+, which includes Eurosport - I also subscribe to Sky Sports - will I still have access to Eurosport? There's a fair bit I watch on it, I'd hate to lose it, but don't want any more bloody subscriptions!

Yeah, they're trying REALLY hard to make out in all the PR that this is a good thing for consumers, when in fact it's worse in every possible way for everyone involved EXCEPT WarnerBrosDiscovery. They can DO ONE. Zaslav & co really are the worst.

Eurosport introduced me to so many weird and wonderful winter sports that wouldn't get shown anywhere else. It's a disaster to see it end like this.

Nope, after today Eurosport 1 & 2 will be gone from the list of Sky channels and you'll have to pay for a Sports Extra package on Sky to get the same content, or sub to Discovery+. Either way, you're gonna be paying more money to access content you are currently getting at no extra cost.

Yes 2 more stations gone but the price never reduces and no you won't get similar stations. Quest will have some content - nothing spectacular and only in SD on Virgin Media Ireland for now.

As well as us all not getting to see many sports that only Eurosport shows regularly, this will have a big impact on Cycling Ireland and other sports where most of their coverage is on Eurosport. Kids take up those sports the see on TV etc.

Was involved in American football in Ireland. Sport started/grew as C4, RTE, Screensport etc which were in most households, were showing games. When Sky Sports bought the exclusive rights in the 90s membership dived to the extent the sport stopped altogether. Only recovered in the 2000s as more and more householdd got Sky Sports.
