It’s a pretty poor excuse for journalism. They should have started with some of the best selling models from 2024 and some new or facelifted model due to arrive in 2025.
Best selling isn't necessarily best though. Nor are new models or facelifts. It's a very subjective term tbh. What's best for me may not be for you.
For EVs, best could be range, equipment, price, or power or a combination of all or some of these. Like price divided by range for example. I could be on to something here… 🤣
“Like price divided by range for example”
Somebody on here done that a few years back. Price per kWh and then price per km based on WLOT.
It may need updating now though.
It would have been a lot easier a few years back. Now it would be a trek.
Ev database gives you that, you can sort by euro per km
Some thing from leapmotors I have never seen before is the cheapest, a tesla model 3 is 2nd, kia ev3 3rd
Has anyone ever used this service? Not too far from me so would be handy to get done.
Any idea of cost or is there something I could buy that would do the same thing just as well for cheaper? Wouldn't mind gerrung the car tested just for my own info

There was a guy on here or the FB group many months ago offering significant discount for the first customers. Can’t remember. Might be no harm for someone selling an EV out of battery warranty. SOH report is €150.
Hopefully this is right topic, forgive if not. With EVs how badly is range effected by leaving heating on. This is practically from October to March? average 23.5 degrees. I don't use heated seats in my Diesel car etc. Thanks
An extra 20% with my car.
Yeah, 20% is an accepted average. So a 400km range would drop to about 320km.
Really depends on the weather. Below 10° you'd see that increase in consumption. Above, would be a bit less. Also things like heat pumps can make a bit of a difference too.
Hi, I'm looking for a handy solution for future electricity outages. We have a 241 MG ZS which I believe has a discharge capability.
I was thinking if I got a cable like this and got a compatible turbo socket for outside which was then connected to a mini consumer board so that it was powered by the car.
Is it then possible to link the main sockets and lights to it so that during a power outage I could turn off the main fuse and then run the house from the car?

My estimated range drops 5% when I turn on the heating. MG4.
Haven't monitored it closely enough to see if that's exactly accurace, but it certainly isn't anything close to the 20% quoted above.
Maybe start your own thread. Include what loads you want to power. Things like electric cookers and electric water heaters are to much of a load. Most people just plug a few essentials into an extension lead like fridge and freezer, phone chargers and oil burner.
Relatively little. It depends if your car has a heat pump or resistive heater. It was more if an issue with older cars with tiny batteries, less so with modern EVs with massive batteries. The cats range estimate automatically drops or rises when cabin heating is turned off or on. A bigger impact is actual range differences summer to winter. In winter your range will stop dramatically. Look at worst case range estimates on the likes of EV database, it gives real figures versus dealers optimistic values. With even winter ranges so high and Ireland quite small you should never need to turn down heating on a modern EV.
Short answer is no. Firstly because your car can only produce max 3.6kW, so hooking it up to your main consumer unit would be dangerous if not useless.
As @zg3409 says, most people just connect an extension lead or leads and run low consumption items.
If you want to get the entire house going, buy a generator. Or a solar system with large battery backup.
You need a changeover switch that will isolate the grid from your consumer unit and switch to "generator source". This is common enough. I have it myself. After being without power for several days a few years ago I got that setup.
You could then connect the car to that and power the house but you would have to very carefully manage what loads you put on it as you only have ~3kW to work with compared to your normal 12kW+ from the grid.
It would have no problem powering taps/toilets (if you have your own well), lights, TV, internet and fridge etc but if someone flicks on the kettle the whole lot is going to trip out.
When I switch to generator I turn various switches in the consumer unit off (cooker, heat pump etc) to ensure I dont overload the generator. You would do the very same and watch for a few other things like someone plugging in a coffee machine, heater or hair dryer etc. Anything thats generating heat needs to be disconnected really.
Happened me with a Niro.
Pressed the kettle without thinking, 3.1kW on that alone.
Stopped everything, had to go out and reset the car (off/on) and all was fine.
It would make you buy a low draw kettle for days out camping etc
just use a microwave instead of kettle for boiling small amounts of water
Carrying a microwave to Glendalough is a bit cumbersome :)
Flask!!
Option, but kettle is easier.
Just use a gas hob for the kettle. Simples.
tried to use a Shell ReCharge charger today, downloaded app and registered etc seems the only way to make it work is with a physical card which has to be ordered, the particular charger I was trying to use does not have any interface on it to tap a card etc
Is a physical card definitely needed to use these Shell chargers?
No need. Have the power to power a normal one. Why complicate it with another gas hob. Simples.
Because I have both electric and gas hobs. Very simples.
Makes sense for you as your Polestar can’t do V2L, so not so simples for others.
You do you. I’ll do me. Thanks.
You are all missing the big picture here. Just piss into a jug and tell everyone you boiled the kettle. They will all be saying this is the nicest cup of tea I ever had.
Just saw this article:
https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2025/0127/1491884-electric-cars-ev-range-anxiety-temperature/
Did this man say 45% drop?
Off topic but yes if at Aldi you need physical shell recharge RFID card linked to app with account. I believe they were not issuing RFID recently. See other threads. The app alone is no good.
Yeah i suppose worst case scenario if you sat in heavy traffic for an hour with heater going the increase in consumption per km would be massive but while I'm moving freely, I think heating on is knocks about 30kms off my full range in around 10% maybe. 45% isn't a fair representation drop from summer to winter for example.
