Nice house overall. A good tidy job.
I thought the finish was fine. The kids will grow up and the steps wont be an issue. On a nice summer's day, the place is going to be amazing.
Lets be honest, 99% of us would love a house like that.
Did Dermot not mention at the start that they had no privacy..."on show" ...it was very open.
He did but setting patio down slightly and having open side facing road was hardly addressing that much?
I have serious house (and location) envy!
They Deserve it so much.
I thought the same! I didn’t see a handrail on the stairs either. Now I’m in my early 60s these things are what I see first!
As anewme said, the idea of the sunken patio was to provide some privacy and shelter from the winds (also explains the "bike shed"!)
Exactly. I would have thought the original level gave a better view of the sea which would be fabulous. I don't know why he wanted to lower the patio. Didn't make sense to me.
A simple hedge grown to a certain height would address the privacy issue. In fact she probably will still end up planting a hedge for this reason.
No handrail at all on the wall side, and using a block of wood as a handrail on the other side. And there will be a flood of posts tomorrow telling you that these are perfectly safe and appropriate.
Dermot now wearing blue The North Face jacket with the logo on it now after having covered for a few years.
Will have to check if Marty Morrissey is allowed to wear one again.
I know it's a TV show and there must be something in the budget to make sure there is the right outcome and this show was the time to use it as I think they did.
Ah ok thanks I saw others at that price point in mayo were affordable housing but I missed it at the glanmire cork one.
Privacy and shelter. They would get a lot of weather (and wind) that side of the house.
I don’t think there was any view from ground level. The ridge height was limited, so to get the ceiling height in the mezzanine room for the view they had to drop the ground floor level.
That would make sense alright.
Yeah that makes sense. If it was my house I would have kept it at same level and done without the mezzanine. She would have ended up with a better patio and a better kitchen space.
A lot of that budgeting is probably scripted to some extent. Hasn't been as bad this season but in other seasons families were miraculously pulling an extra 50 or 100k out of their arse but odds are it was always part of their budget
Lovely house, stunning scenery. Like many others have said, those steps at ground level can be dangerous, not a great idea. Also noticed again this week, the same window company with all their advertising.
Great tv all the same and wish everyone involved the best.
I saw that but to be fair you'd need an 8 ft wall out there in Sligo to get any privacy from the road, the neighbours houses, and to get any shelter from the strong sea winds. Dermot was never going to be able to get that done as part of the job, and she wouldn't have wanted it.
I agree with another poster who said you would need to be standing up in the mezzanine in order to see the sea view, I would have wanted that view from the couch!
Beautiful house, although I didn't think the steps and split level would be ideal for small kids and older people as time goes on. I felt Orla was getting a huge amount of "advice" from her very large family and in-laws, neighbours, tradesmen on this project. A very hard one for Dermot Bannon to manage, particularly with the emotional dimension thrown in.
Within 5 seconds of meeting her he was commenting how nice the view was, and walking around the house he commented how nice the view was from one of the kids bedrooms. Yet there is no view from the sunken dining area and patio?
Were the bathrooms shown at the end? It was so rushed I could have missed it.
a trade off from the view v a usable space to protect against the elements - quite a windy spot if you elevated the outdoor space and close to the road for privacy I’d imagine.
I can see a child going face first into that table from the high step here-
Fine house that ticked all the boxes for the client. I think people are failing to see the contrived drama with Bannon, the QS and the builder. Bannon is many things but a good actor he ain't and you could see him laughing at times at the QS's antics.
Probably not finished in time, planning granted in Nov.
According to this, 3 out of the 4 were unfinished as the new series went out-

Edit-
The view from the road

Enjoyed the episode; tremendous courage shown by Orla; really sad for her.
Likewise think the steps in the kitchen are madness- she may put up a room divider (like a big stair gate); while the outside sunken area is nice it doesn’t offer much for small kids. You’d think a proper garden with swings etc would be more appropriate. Madness converting the garage; where do the bins and kids bikes etc go?…
Would like to have seen the bathrooms esp after the drama picking the tiles
Or indeed an older person carrying plates or a few cups of tea between kitchen and dining, and not looking at where their feet are going.
Fairly conclusive proof that there is no 'sea view' from ground level.
I really liked this one. Beautiful end result and I liked the client, not afraid to put her own stamp on Dermot's design.
Yes, whatever about a step down to a seating/lounge area, a step down from kitchen to dining area is bonkers.
I am thinking I am crazy and I am the only one thats sees it. This is a TV show folks. People saying "Oh Bannon shouldnt get his own way, oh why did they do this, why did they do that, oh dont let him push you around" blah blah. Its a TV show. Its made up.
Like him or not, he is an award winning Architect. If you go on the show, he is going to suggest something mad. It would be a pretty poor show if he just designed a normal house that there are 1000s of everywhere.
There are usually two scenarios that play out in RTI:
Thats pretty much the show folks
Have to see the best in Irish community between the GAA, 5k & the GFM, amazing generosity
I found that an emotional watch this week. Lovely house I hope her and her family are very happy in it over the years.
