The long derelict building at the corner by the Rock Street roundabout/Stacks Villas with the Joe Brolly comment mural is to be knocked and replaced with a 3 storey apartment building. I vaguely remember a butchers there as a child. No harm to see the site being brought back into use.
As it happens I was clearing paperwork yesterday (I like to keep records lol) and I found in the receipts folder dockets from that paint shop for stuff bought. I used to love to ramble in there at lunchtime and look at the wallpaper books and borders!
yeah there was Barrett Butchers there for many years. The man who ran it, John Barrett only recently passed away.

I seem to recall getting a bag of chips out of the building the Donaghy mural is on one time during the festival when I was a small child. Would there ever have been a chipper in the small building on the right hand side?
There was definitely a chipper there in the early 90s

I think I'll buy my "gourmet" stuff in Lidl and I won't go bankrupt paying for it. There must be a lot of fussy rich folks in Kerry. 😛
I would consider them more for hotels/restaurant trade rather than retail as such, that said I have bought some things off them that you just can't get in shops, bigger sizes of course but not out of the way cost wise for what I bought.
Doubt it will be a cafe so, based on that webpage. Looks like an offering similar to Kingdom Food & Wine.
The guy who owns Terra foods is a chef, he used to work in Vals/Ruairis. So its pretty likely they will do food. He is Spanish, so could be tapas type. They do a lot of outside catering too.
I keep meaning to get food in Convivium, down near the multistory. I keep forgetting its there as its so out of the way. But I have heard the food is very good. They do take-away only. The chef who owns it has a regular slot on RTE's Today show.
It's a real gem, they do 4 or 5 different kinds of Lasagne and pasta. The sandwiches are superb there also, they bake the focaccia themselves, proper buffalo mozzarella and parma ham or fennel salami. Max and Tamara are lovely to deal with also.
Would 100% agree with this. It was never a place I'd have thought of, tried it during the food festival and have been back numerous times. Seriously good quality
Stuff in Convivium is delicious, love the focaccia and the tiramisu, got to get there early for tiramisu though!
Sounds like the location doesn't harm them, I just keep forgetting to go in and when I do pass they are closed!

Its more the road in behind Maine St. A one way street that goes to the back of the shopping arcade.
I've an Italian friend who loves Convivium's food so that is a good sign! Considering there are quite a few empty units on the main streets of Tralee, it's a pity Convivium doesn't open in a more visible location that would attract more tourists and locals. I'd much prefer that type of business being visible and showcasing the town's offerings than the many tacky and much less classy businesses that seem to be everywhere on the main shopping streets.
As said above though, it's obviously successful regardless of its location. Long may it last!
I'm sure they would if the rent was right! I'd imagine it's considerably cheaper to rent where they are than a high street premises would be, I'd imagine it's not exactly a big earner.
If anyone remembers the place I used to love the Downtown Deli in the Shopping Arcade, great for lunches etc, not exactly on the main street either but there would be a queue there at lunchtime. Loved the chicken curry, chicken pie and the rolls, delicious. That said he worked very hard, seemed to be on his own most of the time and I'd imagine it was long hours and a hard slog for not too much gain and that was back before there was as much regulation/rules etc, even harder these days!
That place convivium also does catering for small parties,mate was delighted with them

The boathouse cafe in Fenit is all fitted out. Sign in the window saying they are waiting for power to be connected and hope to open in March.
The boathouse was open at Christmas, they surely had electricity then as they were even open Christmas day while the swims were on!?
They had a generator running over Christmas, think it's still there beside the building just outside the toilets, huge red thing. Saw people trying the door there today and taking pics, was that you @DayInTheBog 😊
