There are only two published targets on the Re-turn website.
77% by 2025 and 90% by 2029.
If we assume that the "by 2025" means by the end of Q4 2025 then the outcome won't be known until next January.

Given that there were a lot of in-scope products that deposits weren't paid on for a few weeks in the lead up to the full rollout I'd say the first full calendar year, is likely to be worse than the May 24-May 25 figure so that would not be a smart move.
They should also give the returned figure as a % of how many in-scope products were sold. There was a Newstalk breakfast debate yesterday morning, John Gibbons and Larissa Nolan both agreed that the figure of 900m sounds great but without knowing how many weren't recycled it's a bit of a pointless figure.
Watch as that goalpost shifts to 'first full calendar year' when May comes around and targets are missed.
Why can we not have actual figures for 2024 like x deposits charged and x return vouchers issued.

They will use some smart accounting and plenty of meaningless word salad to convince people it was a success and that we "recycled" more. Lies as usual, nothing to see here.
The only one I've seen online is at the Spar in Newcastle Co Dublin.
We definitely need them to divert the heavy users away from the shop machines.
A possible location would be civic amenity sites.
Among the problems with those locations are that they would only be available when the site is open and also where would you be able to cash your receipt.
Maybe they could use electronic refunds.
A major national outlet like RTE will check out the details in a pr, locals not so much, more likely to cut and copy.
In this case I think the figures given aren't nonsense. They are true but not very illuminating.
They are what they are and as above we just don't have reliable full year figures.

If our return rate is only ~50% that could spell trouble for the system as it was designed to bring our recycling rates from ~70% to up above 90%

Any sign or news of more bulk machines being rolled out, I've a learner driver at home and we keep the returns and use the money back for petrol for the car for her, did a drive sunday for returns, 5 locations we had to visit before we found one working, thats a lot of driving around, was at an off-licence in the end had one working, had a great chat with the lad working about it. Busy day needs emptying once a day, might get two days, told me if it comes up as full while using it he cant empty it for us as he was on his own.
Big plastic bag in his machine and he has to go to rear of building to bring bin around front and no through way so bit of a trek, bag to heavy to carry around, he also commented on the smell, so he wasnt to impressed with the extra workload he had to tend to the machine,
we need more bulk machines and perhaps in better locations rather than small offlicence or small corner supermarkets centra/spar etc.
Absolutely, press releases are lopsided in positive bias. It only works though if the media presents the press release as, in itself, news.
Re-turn operate a state sponsored monopoly with a legal mandate to unilaterally collect money from the public and to conditionally return it. I say they should be held to higher account by our media and not be able to simply churn out nonsense stats and happy clappy quotes from their CEO.
I suppose it may just be coincidence that re-turn also have a decent advertising budget (funded by us all) to divvy out to the media.

At least in other countries customers get a little carrot to go with the stick: IBAN refunds, crushed containers accepted, bulk bin liners dropped off at depots with a bar code, not having to pay higher prices for wheelie bins on top of the new scheme.

It's what has happened in every country that I looked at that has this scheme.
There is a couple of reasons, but but but now I am really really recycling, I can use as much plastic as I want. The man said it.
The second reason is greed, again this was brought in under Single Use Plastic Directive, Cans which are not plastic were included as an extra cash grab.
You may have had some chance with people reducing their plastic use, but not really both, if have to go the machine anyway, why bother.
Again though the vast majority of all this was offered for recycling at home into bins that didn't tell you fúck off half the time.

She's probably still telling her friends all about it. Shows them the CCTV at parties.
It's the shops job to keep the RVM working.
It's not a job for the overly modest and the tendency is to talk up your story.

Once again, no working RVM anywhere nearby. Who is responsible for emptying and maintaining those machines in shops? I reckon it’s ‘Re-Turn’? Or is it the shops somehow? I’d say this whole return scam isn’t working and needs to end now.

Theyve made a strong connection in people's minds between a container passing through the hole of an RVM and "recycle".
The real annual figure will only be available when we have had a full year of only in scope stock being sold.
So basically the figures in the article whether you believe them or not do not tell the full story that we all want to hear.
I don't know if any of the posters on here ever drafted a press release but it's quite normal to put your best foot forward.
Really? Re-Turn reports only on items returned, not recycled, for a start. They also throw out huge numbers without any indication of how many items were returned for the same period the previous year via domestic recycling bins. Recent reports state the overall level of littering, nationally, remains unchanged. I do a weekly litter pick in a rural area here and the number of bottles and cans hasn't shown any discernible decrease.
I would expect a comment like that from you.
We are certainly recycling more and there is reduced rubbish on the streets in my area at least

I really can't believe people are still raging about this. I use it and have no issue but from comments here you would swear that we are living in a post apocalyptic world
Except the Irish Business Association [sic] brought out their report a while back and said "Despite the success of the DRS scheme, litter levels remain unchanged".
All the good(if any) being done by the DRS, is being undone by scavengers going through bins looking for bottles and leaving a mess behind.
I had a fight with a woman on the ReScam thread on facebook yesterday. She was banging on about how great a success it was, and how teenagers used to just throw their bottles around but now they return them to the RVM. I told her she was deluded.
A teenager has just bought a can of Monster for 2.60. They drink it. If you think they are going to go looking for an RVM to get their 15 cent back, when previously they just fecked it into a bush, then you are living in Cloud Cukoo Land.
In Tesco a can of Monster is 2.60. It would take saving up the deposits of 17 other cans of Monster to buy one more. Teenagers nowadays dont have that kind of time!
