I don't think you'd build an architecturally designed 3 bed for that. The 3 beds on daft probably have much lower energy ratings as well.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but it is genuine,
why would you do a renovation when you can build a 3 bed for €275,000 the budget. I checked daft and there’s a few 3 beds at that price and that price includes land it would be less when you have own land, no?
I hope this family gets a lovely home and get what they want and not what Dermot wants.
I don't think there was a need for the production team to film the QS speaking to the lady during the memorial walk- it seemed very insensitive.
what builder can go from pricing to breaking ground in 2 weeks.
why is demot here at all. she has a plan and planning and a builder lined up .
It's gonna be an emotional one. Hope she gets what she wants. She deserves it.
rough start this week
400k for a cavity block house as opposed to cavity wall house is a lot of money alright. But they are paying for the site really. The cavity block construction isn't worth much insulation and damp proofing wise but to replace it is expensive.
They seemed surprised to find it was cavity block which is surprising as a pre purchase engineers report should have highlighted this. Maybe it did and they didn't pay attention to it or else they knew and pretended not to for the sake of having a 'suprise' problem to add a little drama.
I felt that perhaps the couple has different tastes or requirments which they had not discussed until they were picking out finishes. the wife seemed suprised at the kitchen shop when the husband was saying he like the minimal look, with the sink hidden, etc. And he seems to use the words 'I like' throughtout the program. It was never 'we like' or 'we were thinking about' .. the way you describe things as a couple. Maybe it was just me that picked up on this ?
Anyways, back to the house - nice job. But I was a bit shocked at how poorly constructed the original house was. I know it was 1960's. I can understand spending 350k if you inherited it, but after buying it for 400k. It gives people a wake up call if they have romantic dreams of buying an old house to renovate.
No, only do the rugby lifts, we share soccer and Gaelic with 2 different neighbours and I bring their boys to rugby; odd time I or Dad would make a point of going to one of his Gaelic / soccer games. keeps him off the screens
Look those revealed joists with the herringbone bridging don't work for me, I'm almost certain I saw a 2x2 planted on the top of each joist, on closer inspection they would look terrible... I like maybe 2 or three proper load bearing timbers left bare on a tall ceiling but not the way they were done here, drawing the eye to the garden mehole😊…too many timbers look terrible Imv+too much cleaning they are dust traps , have a few decent sized timbers properly prepared if the height allows and leave it at that
I think Dermot suggests things that he knows will be rejected by the client as it adds abit of drama to the program. I don't think they have any intention of moving but who can predict what the house will be worth when they are of retiring age in 10 or more years .they must be on good wages that they can spend 300k on upgrading a house .
You can grants for energy upgrades. I think there's a link on the player website with a full budget for each program. I don't think green is good color for any kitchen top or surface .
well at least thats 3 different groups, do you have to ferry him to each and stay?
Exactly. The filming end and the builder tidied up the remainder when convenient.
Then parents like that need to cop on.
more like 11, she seems to love it. My boy plays ball sports 6 times a week (soccer, rugby & gaelic) and wouldn't have it any other way - he is 12
I think a lot of parents nowadays feel pressure to have their child doing something every evening. Whether it's the one activity like gymnastics or a mix of different sports I think some people think they are failing if they are all at home an evening or 2. It's madness if you ask me especially if it's affecting the parents life balance.
I think it's all caused by money making and parents prioritising their kids winning things over having fun.
I think they did alright budget wise. They had 300k budget, then Dermot presented the figures and it went to 315k + 10k consultant fees whatever they were but at the end it came under the 300k mark.
I had a look at the builders website and upstairs you can the bathroom and a main bedroom were finished. I presume the kids rooms were too. If there's a bit more to do it won't cost much to finish. I don't know why they didn't show upstairs, perhaps filming had to end by a certain date and the builder had yet to do upstairs?!?!?!
what age was she 7? the poor woman had no life, neither will the child, the gymnastics people shouldn't allow it.
She could be doing display gymnastics on top of the competitive stuff. My DD did gymnastics for a number of years and there were some kids doing it 5 times a week
Not for that age it wouldn't. I know kids older than her who are doing competitive gymnastics in Phoenix Gymnastics which is a local rival to Excel and they're certainly not doing it as often as that.
Yes. This would be normal for sports at a competitive level.
did she really say her daughter does gymnastics 6 days a week?
Ultimately it’s entertainment but I feel things like last weeks kitchen colour not being mentioned again is almost bad continuity. I’d prefer to see more about that than DB sitting in a **** bar in London. Too much fluff for my liking. Bathrooms never mentioned again last night after the whole look at the book’s nonsense.
I think it's a bit of a ploy with Dermot to go for a real shock factor suggestion first when it comes to kitchens… adds to the drama of it all and it's almost certainly not his first pick imo. But it leads the client to where he wants to get to.
I.e his suggestion of the green kitchen last night was OTT imo, I think he knew it was, he then got a "compromise" on the green countertop. Funnily enough, he had the green countertop to hand. The was no green cabinet sample to hand.
I thought it funny that the client in the episode the week earlier went with for his first bold suggestion without hesitation, he was visibily shocked that she did. For some reason that wasn't explained, she ended up with a less bold kitchen by the end... Maybe Dermot's intended second choice originally
Ah I’m not sure if I’d really have noticed the counter much if they hadn’t have talked about it, colour wouldn’t be my cup of tea but regardless a lively kitchen. we spent the last year renovating a house with much the same issues as that family and funnily ended up with quite a few things they did (generally not specifics). Underfloor heating in our extension, open plan kitchen, living, dining at the back, quiet room at the front with funnily a very similar dark green. Our kids room downstairs is tiny though perfect for a young fella with his Xbox
Agree with most of that except I thought the green worktop was lovely, but would have been nicer still if it was a darker green. On screen I think Dermot just pushed that colour on them without discussing the shade.
Good tv anyway but as you say could be better with a bit of tweaking. Glad the couple are happy with it.
watched last night only skimmed the comments. thought the house came out really well, kitchen was lovely although didn’t like the green work top
That’s 2 weeks in a row that DB pushed a strong colour for the kitchen then backed off
The exterior look of the extension didn’t look right to me, bit clunky up high. looked a nice practical design for the family and worked well for them.
The show really needs to show more of the actual building and less of the family at play.
As always the grants are a bit loose and brushed by
From looking at what is on myhome I don't think the house is worth more than 600k. It is very uncommon for an extension/renovation to increase the value of the property by the amount spent. I think it is strange people think it does.
I assume this is not their first home so while they may have bought at 400k it probably didn't cost them that much and they had gains from a previous property. They would be very hard pushed to get a mortgage for such a large amount at their age and with one of them on a low wage
