You never hear the 7” version of Disco 2000 by Pulp anymore, it’s always the album version.
Yes!
It's much better than the one on Different Class as it has the following at 3:11 "And now it’s all over,You’ve paid your money and you’ve taken your choice"
Pulp's Hits collection used the album version but you can get the 7" mix on Now That's What I Call Music 33.
But what is a presenters own library in the context of RTE Gold? their CD collection, their spotify account, their laptop??
Like a lot of radio presenters now, RTE Gold presenters (whether doing live or voicetracked shows) just go into studio, use what system is in front of them to play music (radioman) and go home again, they don't want the hassle of consulting their own collections or libraries - if they need to get a song not in Radioman, RCS etc they will look for it in spotify or another on-line resource.
As I alluded to above, physical media is no longer used on RTE radio music shows.
Not at all…
A CD collection or hard drive/laptop.
I know a presenter who would bring his own laptop to studio, with a cartwall loaded with chosen content, and just plug it in to an aux channel and go live. Completely independent of Spotify or the RTÉ database. Shows could also be recorded live at a home studio. Again, independent of Radioman.
One guy, who did a two hour programme, would select his tracklist in advance and burn three CDs of hour one, and the same for hour two, and then go live from the studio, only using the Radioman cartwall for imaging.
One CD for channel one, the other for channel two, and the third as a spare, jus in case.
Why? Because the database didn't reflect his choices.
Dosent Truffles as he is called or Eric use the library for songs that arent on the computer? I seen to recall amanda fennelly saying that a few times
Gosh, I'm mot sure... but why wouldn't you… if you wanted to play something that's not in the system. It makes perfect sense. The CD players are there. Why not?
Up till about ten years ago, there was a set of Technics SL 1210s in that studio.
Yep, Will Leahy has often responded to requests that it’s not in the system and they’ll get Eric to go digging for it.
Yes, that's correct
Would Val Joyce have been the most recent RTE presenter (2006) to do an entire 3 hour show each night using CDs ?
I remember when Phil Crawley took over hosting Today FMs Friday night 80s back in the day, he'd play an odd unplaylisted Debbie Gibson song and mention it was from his own ipod.
I think he means he will go digging for it on-line, not in the CD library. Eric is a producer type back at base in Donnybrook and he also mans the text messages for the live shows including Rick's
No, we're talking, within the past ten years
The library would be used. Don't forget, not everything on vinyl or CD is available on streaming platforms. Especially non charting records by Irish artists.
Particularly Irish artists.
They've always been poorly served by reissues & genre compilations.
The one that always sticks out for me is Friends in Time by The Golden Horde. It's not on any streaming service. I had to get a good old CD to find a copy.
I know that the classic countdown chart that they do at 1pm on Saturday afternoons is the Irish chart and sometimes these have pretty obscure Irish only charters that they occasionally play using a version from the Rte physical record library
I have not listened to this in a while, though when I did Will used to base the countdown on the UK charts of the time, but he would divert the countdown and play the odd Irish only hit and then return to that weeks UK chart.
Is he now basing the countdown solely on the Irish charts? in my opinion I've always felt he should be anyway.
There were significant issues with the Irish charts back in the late 70s / early 80s with alleged manipulation.
The UK chart is probably a better indicator of popular music then , and all the UK chary Top 40 singles are available to Radio stations.
Re the physical library , was there not a programme within RTE to transfer the whole library (radio and television) to digital ?
RTE would have (or are currently) transferred archived radio and TV programmes on film and tape to digital, though not their 1000s of CDs, Vinyl etc - that would take forever and not necessary.
wasn’t Rte radio 2 doing a chart from its launch? Surely Rte kept records of chart positions based off what they broadcast on a weekly chart show ?
Yes Larry and others counted the charts down…You would hope they did keep these lists, however there is the Irish Charts IMRO website that you can search for a song or artist, but not a full chart list.
The Irish Charts - All there is to know
I know that in the 80s the Top 20 singles (Not the full 30) would be listed weekly in the RTE Guide.
What kind of alleged manipulation? This sort of thing? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JORbaMkp0NI
Irish charts can be found on UK Mix

I'd assume Rick O'Shea uses his own records/cd's for Gold Lounge on Sunday mornings.
Hence we heard "Ho Ho Ho , Hee Hee Hee , I'm a Happy Christmas Tree" by Nat King Cole, over Christmas, an experience from which I'm only now fully recovered.
Not a million miles away and undoubtedly happened.
The charts were based on manufacturers sales..…, which arguably was better than being based on readers of the Evening Heralds opinions which was also used for a while.
We are to believe that 'one day at a time' was on the charts for 90weeks......
The chart show on RTE Radio 2 was off air for a while over the whole affair.
bookies were usually very reluctant to take bets in the Irish charts (Christmas being an exception). I know of one unsigned Irish act who managed a top ten placing .. and just one week on the chart.
He admitted around 2 years ago that he doesn't own a CD player at home…so perhaps not.
At least was a version available on CD , there are many radio hits ,Paul Ashford / Scullion / Auto de Fe unavailable and even the CD version of 'My friend John' by the business enterprise is a scratchy single version.
Those Nervous Animals re-mastered some of their 80s output during covid with 'My Friend John' being one of the tracks, so some radio stations have updated their file with this cleaner version, though funnily enough I love hearing it on the radio being played from vinyl, so the clean version sounds a bit off to me. I have that original single at home too on Deadfly records.
Thankfully RTE Gold still play Mama's Boys 'Needle in the groove' from the original vinyl single and not the dreadful re-recording from a few years later (also featured on one of the Tom Dunne Irish hits compilation CDs in 2001)
They have re-issued some Paul Ashford/Stepaside material over the years but I’ve never see One in Every Town there. The re-issues that I owned seemed to be mastered from a 9th generation cassette copy.
Summer in Dublin by Bagatelle is another one to watch out for; there’s a very cheesy cabaret version that gets a lot of airplay.
