Cork developments

Has anyone heard anything about the apartments on Redforge road in Blackpool? The ones at the old petrol station. Last I heard they were supposed to be started at the beginning of November. No sign of anything happening at the moment.

Immensely disappointing. Our total lack of reliable public transport options certainly didn't help... they assumed everyone would drive??

Apparently the building on Washington street where flame was is being turned into apartments.

The lack of concrete action on public transport projects coming home to roost.

Looks great. A shame they can't share St Joseph's entranceway, it would have freed up a few extra metres and provided a fast walk/cycle route to CUH.

Both that and the new O Flynn Ballinglanna development (at Dunkettle) look like very good efforts at providing dense housing in a reasonably sustainable way.

The resubmitted application for demolition of St Joseph's convent site on MFR and building of student accommodation has been given green light. Interesting that they also gave the OK for temporary letting during summer - this was precluded for several of the earlier student accommodation projects when they were being approved.

In a condition on the granting of planning permission, Cork City Council said the development at the former St Joseph’s Convent on Model Farm Road can be used as tourist or visitor accommodation during academic holiday periods but “shall not be used for permanent residential accommodation, as a hotel, hostel, aparthotel or similar” without seeking further planning permission first.

Based on previous history, this approval will most likely be appealed/delayed further.

So that's the road repainting used up for the year. I'd have preferred by the Elysian or Penrose Wharf but one is better than none.

After the fire this week, there is a report in the Echo that new plans are due to go in shortly for over 250 units of student accommodation at the Good Shepherd site, potentially larger than the Bottleworks on Carrigrohane Rd. The previous planning lapsed in 2023.

A property development firm is believed to be working on the final stages of a planning application for permission to build in excess of 250 units for student accommodation on the derelict eight-acre Good Shepherd Convent site.

I fear the Marina Market will become too upmarket with a new revised home, rents will rise and small businesses will fold and only the Starbucks and the likes will take over. Can't imagine the alternative retro feel of the place will remain.

At least they're being ambitious and thinking about it all in fairness. But yeah personally I'd prefer to see them take on more old buildings and keep moving as the area develops. They've done a fantastic job in my opinion. That type of make-do gentrification is exactly what the city needs to help it grow. It's one of the few things that draws new footfall to the city.
