I never bother with it as I may not get to all games (and as you say, the minimal saving isn’t worth the risk) but aren’t there meant to extra benefits like a guaranteed seated ticket if seating available? I also thought stuff like first preference on championship tickets?
That's it. Like season tickets on all sports allow a game or 2 to be missed and it'll still be worth it. Miss one here and it's absolutely not worth it.
Indeed, you do get preference for Championship. But our games don't sell out. And in fact in years past the sections set for season tickets aren't great location. I got stung badly for Tailteann Cup final, where they put us versus what was released after. Lads walking up on the morning got centre field tickets, and we were in the corner of the Cusack
Only benefit is where a county has a good chance to get to a All-ireland Final and then you are guarnteed a ticket.
I would have thought he is tethering on the edge of bringing the reputation of his employer into disrepute, accepting a role at a direct competitor.
It’s been clear for a long time now he takes absolutely no pride in his role. In my opinion him managing Gowna was even a conflict of interest, let alone a rival intercounty team. If he wanted to manage intercounty, go to a team like Longford or Leitrim who are no longer in direct competition with Cavan.
The whole development squads are a mess now. It’s not just even about parents of players. Some clubs are essentially following a herd tactic - send a coach in and attempt to get as many players as you can, regardless of their suitability, onto the panels.
If they’re stuck for volunteer coaches, try and approach experienced people not in the direct club scene at the time.
Then there was the debacle of the recruitment of the minor management. They spent months interviewing people, then approached someone who hadn’t applied for the role and, in the midst of that, managed to annoy people who had actually been working with the squads who have now walked away.
Anyone hear how the challenge went against Donegal a couple of weeks back? Can’t remember what exact weekend it was, same weekend as Conor Moynagh’s wedding is all I remember.
I saw a few players listed on Sigerson Panels. Two of the Shehus with Sligo, Ryan Donohoe & Evan Crowe with DCU and Cian Reilly, Daragh Lovett, Evan Finnegan, Cormac McGeough & Niall Carolan with TU Dublin. James Maguire from Shannon Gaels with ATU Donegal too.
I heard from a sligo man that we gave Sligo a good clipping last weekend but ni details
Don't expect any info on cavan team from this "national" paper
https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41548684.html
Very little info alright. The pod had it closer than this suggested (although still not great) at 1-15 to 0-9. Team very much not front liners either, like Kerry
This no McKenna Cup is madness though. Of all years. Every man and their mother knew this would happen. Instead of 2 games, one home one away minimum in Ulster over one week, we're travelling to Kerry for an away challenge game. Mad stuff
What’s even worse is Cavan were lined up to play Donegal the weekend of Moynagh’s wedding. Several players, quite naturally, were at it, and didn’t drink. The game was then called off.
Say what you like about the McKenna Cup but you wouldn’t get crap like that happening. Game being called off wasn’t the fault of anything on the Cavan side I understand but very frustrating for the lads.
Paul Fitzpatrick was dead right on the podcast about the GPA, they are completely out of touch with reality. Jobs for the boys is all it is.
That trip will have put a right hole in the profits from the Breffni Bash 😐️.
I can't see the point in that trip atall and would love to know what it cost.
In the absence of McKenna Cup, the panel needs challenge games. Playing Kerry, regardless of whether Kerry are at full strength, is a good test for new lads on the panel. We play the Ulster teams often enough, and if we are going to be playing challenge games ideally it's division one teams. So I can see the point of it, regardless of cost.
It's bound to have cost in the region of 8-10K to go down there and for a county that has the begging bowl out the whole time in my eyes does not represnt value for money.
It's all mad stuff alright. I did hear though that we are playing Galway this weekend. I disagree with this Challenge match series, but I'll say one thing, we've managed to sort out quite a number of good matches to balance this. Heard we neat Kildare and Sligo, meant to play Donegal but called off with the weather, and Kerry and Galway. Good workouts all in I'd say
It's hardly the fault of the county board though- it's a national issue that has caused this problem.
I would have thought that financially Cavan seems to be well-managed. Every county board (barring possibly Limerick, Kerry and Dublin) are constantly fundraising for all manner of capital investment, so I wouldn't agree that Cavan "has the begging bowl out all the time".
I hear you that there's a cost to play Kerry, but would you rather a challenge against Kerry or a challenge against Wicklow, Waterford or Laois. Or maybe Longford- they're no use, but it would save on cost. Or play Fermanagh (again).
They are well managed i suppose to an extent. Still think its daft driving 5 hours each way to Kerry but thats my view.
In relation to finances does anyone know what the below is about. I'm thinking it is in relation to the S&C coach that left but why would you pay someone who has "left" thousands for six months after they leave?
The figure for ‘Backroom Team Personnel’ stood out as having increased from €163,113 to €237,288; this was explained by secretary Martin Cahill, in response to a question from the floor, as having related to “a period of time when we had an employee who left us” and a “six-month separation payment”.
According to WAC, it went un-noticed by delegates until one of them (who is a delegate) asked for clarification. Yes, it is about the former S&C coach. I am assumming that due to the lack of elaboration it must relate to some sort of falling out which when you factor in employment law, precludes much detail in discussing the ins and outs. I am not privvy to anything but just reading between the lines.
It's a funny one alright i wonder was he a Employee of the County board or a contractor.
I gather a direct employee. Again, no direct knowledge but I do know something about being an employer and when there is an issue, including a change in personel, change in contract or where someone is being moved on, there usually is a cost and often it precludes making any sort of public annoucement about it in case it implies blame or wrong-doing which could lead to legal implications.
Andre Quinn. He was a direct employee, otherwise they could have just cut him providing services immediately.
He was there a good few years they must have tried to get rid of him without going through due process and he got his solicitor onto it.
WAC lads made a good point. If the senior team didn’t need him, why not put him working with the development squads? It’d be much more advantageous for all parties than paying him to sit at home.
Last I heard he’s now in Japan working with a professional rugby team.
Oh absolutely it is not their fault. I was commending them/management for the matches we've got so far
I dont think employment law precludes details being discussed but either party involved could make that a stipulation in any agreement. It does show the tricky (and expensive) situations that can develop when you want to part ways and maybe for something like S&C is should remain a contract position rather than a full time role with Cavan GAA as the employer.
Not directly, but you could say something after the fact when there's been a dispute that could lead to a constructive dismissal case, so any legal advice would be to keep schtum as much as possible.
Anyone know where and when the challenge against Galway is on?
I had heard Galway too, but seems it was Derry. Very decent summary here in the Celt
Cheers for that tazman. Good report .I know it's only a challenge but one of the things we need to improve on is creating goal chances (and obviously taking them too!!!)
Cannot wait for Saturday week.
Yeah, at least we are creating them. Need to take more. And seems we're getting 2 pointers as well. Also cannot wait for next weekend. No January pre-season football has made this post Christmas period very long.
