As suggested in other thread, starting new thread, to continue discussion, and reduce the issue of 'Vanilla Tremble' (…another great new Boards feature!!!).
After event, will merge threads.
That's lovely, thanks. I just hope everyone living around there is ok, it must be so difficult being snowed in like that. The height of the snow at the pillars is unreal, I presume the turbines are switched off.
@sryanbruen
During the 2010 cold spell what was the lowest daily temp recorded or should i say lowest daily max temp recorded? Cheers.
Ballyhaise Cavan -9.4c
Edenfel Tyrone -11.3c
For those asking, here is a little explainer of why temperatures did not drop to the levels expected last night. A different story tonight. I would post directly here but i can't post videos on boards.ie. the last title should say 5-6pm wednesday (not tuesday)
Long time reader, but just wondering where do you get the temperature readings?
Here you go
I can confirm that the roads and paths in Sandyford are lethal. Black ice unlike ever before.
I've friends all over Kerry who are stuck indoors with no power and no way out. Have farms and are trying to get feed to livestock. Who can't travel to work because they value their lives. Be grateful youve no snow in your garden. 😁
@sryanbruen Thanks for those lovely pictures from Dublin.
-4.8 at my location, n. Offaly. That was the min this morning and we're already at it. Could be a - 10 on the cards if the rate of cooling continues. Clear skies help tremendously, but if fog forms it may keep temperatures a little higher but still well below freezing. No snow cover here apart from a little dusting on sheltered spots. Feed the birds, make sure you put out water in a shallow dish too and replenish so it doesnt freeze. Tomorrow will be the peak as it were of this snap. Not too memorable in this spot, but others will have their memories certainly. Dec. 2010 far ahead of this in cold and duration. And Jan 82, 87 more snow, colder but similar length.
-9.8C Loreto College (Cavan) 21st Dec
I know this because it has stuck with me , I recall it being ballyhaise in cavan -9.9ºc was the afternoon high ,now they may have been a colder place I'm not sure but I'll never forget hearing that
Good to know. Never saw that before
Spot on. I'm in rural Kilkenny which by any measure is a good distance from tralee yet you have all these cranks whining on about no snow in the country, schools shouldn't be closed, met eireann are useless bla, bla, bla.
Talk about children 🙄
Exactly !!!
Sryan that lighthouse pic is absolutely incredible. You put many fantastic photos up over the years but that made me go wow .
Have to say it was even better than it usually is, Could have done with a decent camera.
Rugged beauty, snow capped peaks with the half moon visible in a clear blue sky over them. Pretty cool and one of the nice parts about this weather.
looks like those Irish Sea streamers might reach south Wicklow ? Whoever is in the narrow band a bit inland if they do do is in for some fun
They might stay out at sea though
Currently it’s 1.2c here in Arklow
Dp is -0.1c and WB is 0.7c
Wind is NNE at 10 to 20 kmh
Low temps (c) at 7.20pm: Baconstown, Meath (-5.9) Kilmallock, Limerick (-5.7) Killyclogher, Tyrone (-5.3) Tullamore, Offaly & Nealstown, Laois (-5) Adare, Limerick (-4.8) Killyvehy, Leitrim (-4.7) Mountdillon, Roscommon (-4.4) Athenry, Galway (-4.1) Thurles, Tipperary (-3.8)
Just for fun, according the meteociel map, right now Dublin is the coldest European capital city at -4C. Next coldest is Oslo at -3.8C. Even Moscow and Helsinki are a good bit warmer, at 3C and 1C respectively. I know MetE round their hourly readings, but let's just assume it's colder than -3.8C for winning's sake ;)
And it's colder than Glasgow and Edinburgh too in case you were wondering.
EDIT: Nevermind! I missed Iceland, Reykjavik is -9C

Thanks Shpongler for the great reports, photographs and videos and great taste in music!Tou are a dab hand at the drone. Might consider getting one myself sometime.
I feel for all those cut off and awaiting power and water restored, huge hardship to many people, these couple of days especially will be very hard on farmers, the elderly and the infirm, not to mind livestock and nature and hopefully the thaw wont cause too much flooding from the weekend, a reprieve next week being milder at least, hopefully not too much rain the weekend, most models showing it not too wet.
Hang in there, a few more days should see an improvement with a good thaw setting in , temps slow to rise Sat getting up around 5 to 9C or so but should be getting over 10C From Sun through Fri for good parts of the country.
Thanks Donegal Sryanbreun and Dazler, hard to believe it. I will always remember driving home from Donegal to Offaly and on the motorway not far from Boyle in Roscommon at 3.45 PM think it was the 21st maybe 22nd and the temp on the dash read -11. That was a very very long drive!
Isn't Iceland in Europe? (Reykjavik colder)
That would be an ecumenical matter. It's not a member of the EU.
Godammit yes how did I miss that?! Well it doesn't count ok, it'll probably be in America along with Greenland soon enough anyway. ;)
Huge difference already in where temps were at this time yesterday evening. The double digit -10c might be reached at some station.
I saw -10. There this cold mist/fog at those temps that looks like nothing else.
The battery in one of the cars froze. After a few hours in the sun the following day it started right up.
Heavy snow showers here.
West Waterford 250m ASL
nearly like Alaka as the forgotten state or even Donegal as forgotten county ; )
My driveway slopes away from the house by about 1.5/2m over 12m length. I went out to put something in the wheelie bin and I almost ended up on the road! Rathfarnham area of Dublin- it’s a savage thick frost/Ice. Fog is getting thick also.
