As suggested in other thread, starting new thread, to continue discussion, and reduce the issue of 'Vanilla Tremble' (…another great new Boards feature!!!).
After event, will merge threads.
Down in Longford for the week and went for a cycle today with family. Ice on handlebars never melted so I'm presuming it stayed below 0c all day here. Forecast is for -8c tonight. 🥶
So the snow in D16 has in fact turned to rain and that rain has melted any frost that was on the grass.
Looks like a regular wet day out now 😑
Snow falling on the M50 near Junction 12 for Firhouse
Much heavier snow now streamer now in Dublin 16!
Light rain/sleet near Santry. We are just out of the stirring of these showers. Going east of me.
Looks like too steep an angle of the streamer for myself in D9. Very little forcing on it in any which way, it's almost stationary out to sea. Already looks like a much more NNE steering wind is gripping onto it. Could be some nice action further south of me anyway.
There are some locations where school closures were warranted but there were plenty where they were not.
temperature -1 and dew point 0, how on earth can there be rain or sleet. so bizarre
Hasn't lifted above -1.5c here in carrick every where is iced ,gonna go garage in a few minutes wish me luck
.b
Hear hear, i have that 🤡 on ignore for years!
Fog never lifted here today, Portlaoise. Main roads fine but lots of people walking on the roads as the pathways are like skating rinks . Snow still lying here, hasn't gone anywhere yet.
Thinking back to 2010 looking at the flow of streamers coming into Dublin. Remember fondly the randomness of hail, heavy snow, flurries & thundersnow all within the space of a few miles. Memories…
I’d take 5 minutes of sleet now.
No thaw at my location in Clare today
Tonight here will start off cold from -5ºc before midnight to 0c by 3am weird
This is a bit flippant.
Principals of primary and post-primary do not like closing schools.
Schools will close depending on factors such as if the local buses are running and if staff can make it in. Is it safe locally for parents to drive kids in and for kids to walk. Does the school have running water and electricity.
Like most places of employment, most staff do not live within immediate proximity of their place of employment so this can also be a factor.
Safety comes first.
Plenty of schools rightly erred on the side of caution and either closed or had delayed starts of 11am. We received a text from the kids school this morning to say school was going ahead but a couple of the immediate roads were dangerous so re-route.
Where are those temp and dew points for? Dublin?
Yes Dublin. Even on Met Eireann website its says Dublin airport, phoenix park and casement all sub zero
Temperatures must have rapidly increased under that shower. Any local wow stations will probably show that.
Not a bit. Safety comes first is a complete cop out though. The risks caused -4C hard frost are the exact same as those 20 years ago but schools choose to close now. Risk tolerance is absent.
The colour warnings were meant to help people understand risk, but what they've actually done is create the conditions where any risk has to be avoided.
If a child slipped and fell in icy weather going to school 20 years ago it would have been considered an accident where the child didn't take due care. If it happens now, the principal will be in the firing line for having the school open. That's the difference.
Snowfall from the advancing Atlantic front on Friday pertains mostly to high ground in Munster, based on the Arome. The thaw will be a slow process for areas that experienced heavy snow in this cold spell. Painful for those communities, but it does mitigate associated flood risks.
I am very surprised no warnings have been issued for Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo for tonight and Thursday morning due to the risk of further snow showers. Good potential there tonight again.
Those more easterly winds should be killed off pronto.
Heavy frost remained all day, which is unusual right on the (Louth) coast. Early this morning was -3°C never got above 1°C today , seems like the coldest day here since December 2022.
Looks like a high of -1c here today, temps falling now again as the clouds clear
"idiotic people using unsuitable vehicles to go up [the impassable] Sally Gap" says Wicklow Mountain Recue. At least 20 abandoned stuck cars in the area
Whats the M18 like (Galway motorway). Is Galway city centre ok to drive into?
Saw many GO cars, 4x4 and rear wheel drive s. Stuck outside roundwood on Sunday. Incorrect tyres for the weather .wasting peoples time
Did Mayo to Galway city and then out through Connemara, Maam cross Westport and then home.
Roads are good. Motorways even more so. Just take the usual care but they are being treated and have no snow just the danger of possible ice later.
I'd say the Maam Cross to Leenane+Westport road was very picturesque.
