As suggested in other thread, starting new thread, to continue discussion, and reduce the issue of 'Vanilla Tremble' (…another great new Boards feature!!!).
After event, will merge threads.
it isn't quite clear what the impact of frost warrants an orange warning. A colder night could affect pipes and so on and that might justify something. However, there is much talk of black ice, but air temps could be +1C yet there could be ice on the road or footpath, how exactly is —6C worse?
1pm in day and still some stations are still at -3, we are missing that sunshine today to increase the temperature.
At 1pm, it has gone subzero at numerous stations, including: Castlederg, Tyrone (-3.7) Ballyhaise, Cavan and Portglenone, Antrim (-3) Gurteen, Tipperary (-2.6)
Tonight will likely be colder than last night. Less cold in the northwest where there will be more cloud cover
Valid point. I think gusser and myself are probably on about the overuse and confusion over warnings. We have orange warnings changing back to yellow and back to orange maps with the north of Ireland in yellow from the Met office. Met eireann got the snow warnings spot on when issuing an orange warning and compacted snow and ice there is giving a much higher impact today than the majority of us. However we are in forecast mode and a weather advisory along with a national 32 county yellow warning would suffice from yesterday. Tonight's forecast is a different kettle of fish due to the low Base temperature today already and freezing fog a major hazard due to calm conditions. It's only an opinion. I hope everyone down south gets some respite from the hardship endured in the coming days.
A whole ice day for me in Meath, take care on the roads.
👀 Wind has shifted a tad
I could ice skate around my yard and the birds aren't being shy at all! I don't know the temps up here but the lying snow is hard as a rock on the road and the fields. The sky is such a gorgeous shade of blue. Sligo 90m asl
Dublin was added to the warning yesterday evening I think.
I don't know all the area's where it is apparently "madness", but the catchment of teachers and staff could presumably play into a schools decision, rather than conditions in the school yard.
Also dry v wet/ snow and ice cover can't be overlooked. The pavements in Roundwood village were lethal, but the council/ contractors have worked hard on that today. But there was a burst pipe on the main street overnight. The estates looked lethal on foot or vehicle to be honest even now at lunchtime, never mind at 7.30 when school buses are scheduled.
View from Knockelly road, Fethard area. Pity I didn't have a camera with me. Tesco keep cancelling deliveries on me, so had to hit the road.
Definite movement towards the coast now alright. If we had just got a few more hours tonight of favourable wind, could have been interesting inland. Given the above average SSTs over most of the Irish Sea (M2 buoy off the east coast reading 11.1c), and 850s of around -6/-7c, there should be some heft in those showers one would imagine.
Unfortunately, it's not just the odd scenario where many teachers can't make it to one school. My husband's school had serious disruption yesterday because 25% of teachers in a large school couldn't travel.
Jaysus it's ⚽️✔️ out.
Would not say most areas are ok .Maybe more people because Dublin and coastal East is ok and higher population , with some saying " what's the fuss ?"
But massively impacted areas around South and Midlands and further away from coast where thaws have frozen and will freeze further harder tonight .
Think frosty dry areas like ours in Dublin will cope alright but people in " most areas " are not ok as yet .
Do the experienced weather posters here think North Dublin will get a snow shower this evening ? Looking at those earlier charts , it might miss us ..again .
Got out with the dog at lunchtime. Still a winter wonderland in Nth Tipp!
It looks like dusk !
More like 🐜⚡️✔️!!
Would freeze the ⚽️⚽️ off a 🎺🐒
I live on this road!! Very icy at the moment
Ominous looking sky in Sandycove
This has been bang average for East Cork, one of the few places in Cork that didn’t have some lying snow. It’s not even that cold, didn’t get below freezing last night and it’s currently 3 degrees. We need an easterly here to do well really.
Kids still off school here in Carlow, mostly likely won't be back until Monday as there has been little to no thaw here. To add to the harsh driving conditions a thick fog is setting in 😶🌫️
To be fair, you are the classic, I'm all right jack.
My steep driveway, still 8cm of snice.
Thats ice on the road out front the school bus goes up and down. Haven't had post since this started, have had 2 multi hour power outages. Currently -2, was -4 last night.
Glad you are all right there, Jack.
I'm sure today must be the coldest day for many since the Dec 2022 spell?
"In my day I had to walk to and from school barefoot, uphill both ways, -10 in June and fight a Tiger each time."
Wintry shower here in Monkstown at the moment.
No snow in Dublin of course but at least we get to enjoy a frosty wonderland today. IMMA gardens in Kilmainham.
One point that hasn't been mentioned about schools closing this weather ....
Any of you sit in one of those classrooms for 7/ 8 hours with the rattly windows and condensation fogging up the place with your coat on and the heaters barely getting warm never mind heating a prefab or room with bare concrete block walls?
🥶
Of course I am sure that is not the case in 2025 , is it ?
Still no way out of here. Temperature below zero all day. North Kerry 250m ASL
I used to cycle home from school in sometimes 40°C+ temperatures. We had a shower spike you stick in the lawn with a cold feed garden hose to it. I'd shed my soaked school clothes and go stand under that for 5 minutes or so. Cycling face on into 40ºC+ air feels like you are cooking yourself in a fan forced oven.
Showers have developed in the Irish Sea and are beginning to make landfall in Dublin. Were they forecast? They're moving from East to West.
These could cause serious issues in terms of ice and possibly freezing rain for this evening's rush hour!
