who the hell buys a new diesel?! scrap! the only argument they ever had going for them, was they were more economical for longer trips. Electric now, will pre heat, can be fuelled for dirt cheap in comparison… and the biggest plus, you arent driving a diesel. I happily pay a premium to drive my petrol, over the equivalent with a diesel engine. There are so many new model electrics coming out and the prices for some of the models, I believe, is like 19,000…
Thats not true. New cars I've bought in the past, the agreed price / trade in price had nothing to do with the finance option taken. Whether I was taking their finance offer or paying with magic beans, the agreed deal didn't alter.
Ask yourself why every single lender in the world will charge you interest on a loan but PCP can be at 0%.
Do you think the lenders are actually willing to lose money because of inflation on money they lend out?
Not getting into a debate with you about it. I'm stating the facts. I've bought numerous new cars, how I financed it was an independent decision to the agreed deal for the car on every occasion. I don't know how they do it, but the likes of VW Bank / BMW Finance have big muscle and want to shift units, therefore they do whatever they can to make their finance offers as attractive as possible.
No certainly not, I hate everything the Greens stand for but I do believe more should be done to penalise car manufacturers for making such big heavy cars as they do today and taxes in my opinion should be greatly increased on these cars, they have gone ridiculously big for most European roads and parking spaces, country roads here are too narrow for these yokes too.
More should be done to promote smaller cars and one person transport. At least that's what I think, we can't keep clogging streets up with bigger and bigger vehicles.
We already pay enough VRT here. No need for any more. Smaller cars are already promoted since they generally have a lower VRT rate.
I didnt use PCP
I had the option of buying outright, 0% HP or 3.9% pcp. Outright is not a runner in this case so I picked HP out of the other 2 options.
I'm well aware everything is priced in to car price. But there was no discount available to buy outright. So paying them on the drip 48 months in a row rather than upfront is a better option. For many reasons.
0.0 % finance can be as good as it Seems . If a model or brand is struggling to sell cars its a good way to attract buyers . If they slashed thousands off car prices it would then effect resale values and aldo look desperate .the brands are subsidising the interest bank charging .
No such thing as a free lunch, or a free finance deal.
You are paying for it somehow or somewhere - VW aren't charitable!
Makes perfect sense actually, as the old saying goes, you get nothing for nothing!
Could be partly the reason cars are significantly more expensive too.
here's some info from ChatGpt.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) has become a prevalent method for financing new car purchases in Ireland over the past decade. In 2017, some dealers reported that up to 70% of their new car sales were based on PCP agreements.
The Irish Times
By 2018, PCPs accounted for approximately 40% of car finance deals, with the total value of PCP agreements reaching €1.5 billion.
The Independent
In 2021, data from major car manufacturers indicated that PCPs continued to be a significant financing option. For instance, BMW Financial Services Ireland reported that 64% of their new car sales were financed through PCPs, while Toyota Financial Services indicated that 63% of their new business involved PCP agreements.
Although more recent comprehensive statistics are limited, these figures demonstrate the substantial role that PCP financing has played in Ireland's new car market in recent years.
Auction Houses: Merlin Car Auctions reported that up to 50% of the vehicles they auction are bank repossessions. This indicates that a significant number of repossessed vehicles are sold through auctions.
My understanding is that these big companies are able to easily secure loans at 1% or 2% from banks and thus can offer low or zero interest loans to customers on models that aren’t selling well. VW Group also have their own bank.
Regarding PCP, the dealers are deliberately not explaining it properly. They will tell people that by putting down less kms than they're doing it will just eat into any equity in the car which is probably going to be 0 on PCP anyway .
The key for the dealer is putting down the cheapest monthly payments down in front of the person who wants that new car with all the bells and whistles. They don't want to know about anything else.
The cost of money is the same for everyone with no exceptions. It's ECB rates plus a margin (again banks aren't charitable).
What's the problem in paying more tax for their sheer size and weight ? if they're all so affordable should be nothing to the owners , then they can pay for the privilege of taking up a lot more space.
There's big massively heavy EV who would paying less tax than a small car given they have grant and vrt relief the small car owner doesn't get.
The last thing VW can afford to do is gave away free money.
isn’t there a pcp thread on boards already?
8 days in and nobody has reported 251 LS 1. Didn't yer man change car brands a few years ago? Does anyone know if he's still driving?
Thanks, surely a mod will delete a score msgs
To a point yes but manufacturers tend to use zero finance to drive sales often while being reluctant to discount. So on a new vw, you might pay retail and get zero percent finance which is equivalent to a few k discount.
It can be hard to achieve the same discount with vw if turning up with your own funds
The great decline of boards in full flow :(
Haven't seen one yet. Usually it's when I leave Dublin I see them popping up.
Yes he changed to a Suzuki. Maybe he got another Suzuki. H
Really ? you should see reddit, lol, every post is deleted that offends someone.
Back when the ECB was applying negative interest rates to deposits the 0% finance rate was a good way for VW bank to offload cash, and keep their order books filled up.
Thats a different type of decline and I'm too old for reddit anyway lol
wrong thread
There's a red 251 Puma around the corner from me, and I was behind a white 251 ID4 earlier. Both registrations in the 1000s.
I saw the back of a 251 bin lorry on Facebook. I can't make out the digits, but it is 2***
It's not the New Year with our friend in Portlaoise showing up on the thread. No sign of 251LS1 or 2 on motorcheck etc yet. That guy was no spring chicken either so…..
Here it is from T Nolan Scanias Facebook page…

Very sad.
