There’s a noticeable difference between this evening and last night in cork. The roads in the parks were worse this morning than Monday, and even near 5pm the roads in my park had a shine off them that wasn’t there yesterday.
Many people say there is nowhere in Ireland as cold as the railway platform at Limerick Junction. There is truth to that as the Tipperary station is currently the coldest spot in the country at minus 4c.

However, on the news there was school in Carlow, which seemed to be in town, where the actual road to the school had not received any treatment although other roads were better. Three days into this a road to any public facility should have been attended to, this is very slack on the part of the local authority.

For me rather than clearing by Friday it looks like this is the worst day!! Heavy snow for parts and a risk of freezing rain at rush hour. Surely of all days Friday morning looks like a serious morning

This is the main issue really for schools. Many are simply not on main routes and therefore are not gritted nor looked after by local authorities as standard practice.
There's no provision from the dept of ed for funding any sort of private works to maintain trafficability either immediately to/from schools either so it's not something schools can sort off their own bat either.
There's only so much a single caretaker or small caretaker team on limited hour contracts can do either with both school grounds and routes to the school so all in all we just end up with a hodge podge of actions that may or may not happen should there be the availability of local authority personnel/machinery.
In my locality during 2009 and 2010 where the effects were relatively long lasting during the winter local authorities made piles of grit/gravel available at a few junctions where main roads met non primary/backroads and let the locals mainly the farmers but some others too have at it and try get some out on the important/busy yet non main routes.

Wouldn't be overly concerned with thin high cloud stopping temperatures falling, we had the thin high cloud for all of Friday night across the entire country and temperatures still dropped to -3c and -4c over green fields:

the question is why local authorities do not routinely "look after" facilities like schools, doctors etc? They might not be in the first pass of the snow plough but they should get done at an early stage. I don't see this as an issue for the Dept of Education, although clearance of school yards etc might be.
Thats a really good way of showing it. Met Eireann get a lot of flak but they played this one extremely well - apart from the obvious problem with Cork being far too big of an area to be under the same warning, but anyway.
The only thing they got wrong was that some parts should have been Red I think.

Surely this was exceeded in quite a few places.

Looking at the weather app I am under an orange warning until 10am Wednesday, then yellow until 6pm when it’s back to orange until 11am Thursday morning.
Then once again back to yellow until 6am Friday morning…. However the temperatures in the early hours of Thurs night/Friday morning are showing as dipping back into Orange (-7°) and are significantly lower than the temps on the previous night/early morning.
Will Met be reviewing the warnings for the coming days?
If you zoom in you will see a lot of forestry/ woodland and lakes, some of the forestry is only a few acres in size.
Those criteria were definitely passed in a lot of areas but a couple of miles down the road it wasn't as bad so it was very hard one to call for Met Eireann. Around me definitely deserved a red warning but I wouldn't be blaming Met Eireann. All in all I think they got it right.
I think the biggest thing that caught people out was they didn't take the orange warning seriously enough,and went about their business as normal,with many getting stranded.
Anyway back to current conditions and it's now -4.1c

Ha.. the flu junction I used to call it. We’ve had a sprinkling up in Antrim, enough to cause chaos on the roads. Is Friday going to be bad up North too? I’m sure there’s more snow showers to hit us in the coming days.

That WOW isn't displaying correctly for a good while. It's not showing the latest readings.
The readings are there if you drill down a site and look at data display.
E.g. Gurteen is showing the the 9:30 reading of -1 but inside the 10.30 reading of -2.1 is there
Unless that kennel has some sort of heating system, the dog should absolutely not be out in it in these temperatures.
Dogs can and do die from freezing. There is specific mention of animal welfare in the weather warnings.

It may have been the 1963 snow, apologies. A little on it here in the Ridge article below. Next time you're up, check inside the end gable of one of the remaining cottage ruins. The Clears left their message. There's a plaque there now but I have a photo of the original scrawled message on the inside gable.
