That's getting way too specific. The Met Office system is ideal, they mark out specific areas on a map that people can look at, and then just list out at a high level the general areas impacted. E.g East Midlands, West Midlands etc

Spitting sleet-rain here near the Kilkenny-Laois border at 90m ASL. We ended up with 5.5 inches of snow, but a bit of a thaw going on out there now as temperatures are nudging above 1c.
Exactly, plus you have bus companies that obviously can't drive in icy conditions as backroads are untreated and absolutely lethal.
Let the kids have a bit of fun in the snow, isn't that what it's about.
The snow that places got today with the exception of areas in Limerick, Cork, Kerry and Kilkenny is really a normal amounts we get in the northwest each winter. Was nice to see southern and Eastern area getting some white gold for a change.
68.1mm of precipitation for this event, got 1cm of snow max, would have been nice to get a bit more of it as snow!

It was never going to be an event for north Leinster and especially Dublin where there was no forecast for snow from anyone (relatively warm Irish sea at present)
But the very low temperatures for Tues to Thurs will affect North Leinster, so gloves and scarves at the ready.
I’m no snowflake but it’s definitely wise to close schools in areas effected like Kilkenny Carlow Tipp Laois etc- it’s not so much the schools themselves although it’s not great with slippy footpaths Etc, it’s the getting to and from schools for students and parents- driving on very dodgy roads causing chaos and even accidents. If all that can be minimised for a day or a few days then I’m for it. In the early 90s our school closed for a week - one of my best childhood memories. So it’s not a recent thing it’s always happened

I came down from Glencullen at 5pm today, the roads were flooded in spots and there is a hullovalot of snow up on Three Rock.
Why would they?

I have been watching the temps here as our pipes and pump can freeze up.
Its gone up a degree, down a degree, and then back up a degree sitting at 2.6c now.
Its been raining well over 24 hours now, but it was only 33mm, it's still spitting.
I thought my rain gauge was off maybe, but a trip to shops revealed little flooding, so light rain.
the wind is swinging around to the West now from North earlier, fairly calm.
I feel for everyone without power as we have had some long cold outages here over the years.

A thaw on here , Portlaoise, can hear the water in the down pipes , and a slow drip drip off outdoor table etc .
a lot fo schools and businesses closing tomorrow in north tipp area. comes down to lots of employees living in untreated areas and up hills, rather than the roads around the schools. also lots of school have plumbing/electrical works done over the break and might as well stay closed with the crzy forecast coming this week.
dont they have a few snow days baked into the calendar anyway?
It's been heavily raining in my local here in D14 now for almost 30 hours, imagine the uppers were colder to negate that onshore breeze, Dublin suburbs would've been buried! Still, very interested in the river levels for the Dodder and the runoff from the mountains over the week

The issue is not all the country has had snow and the roads are clear, there is no justification to close schools because it's fashionable to do so.
Anyway, when's the next event we can moan about due?
Plenty of other discussions on this site to engage in teacher-bashing. They didnt close schools during COVID and they arent the ones closing them this time.

This. But I reckon the roads will be a bit slippery tomorrow with the leftover snow/ice and the temps dropping so we will see but I think it is warranted in Naas.

Many schools in country areas are relying on a school busses being able to bring the kids to school. With many roads being dangerous, it's common sense to close
