Is NI cheaper for buying alcohol?

Myself and OH are gonna take a trip up North, but it occurred to me that it might be good to grab the Xmas alcohol while there too if it's particularly cheaper than in the Republic.

Is it cheaper or much the same, i.e. red wine for €9-€12 in Tesco here, how much there?

Is ASDA the best place to go for deals?

Wine, and spirits yes. Mass-market beer in large volume, yes.

Specialist beers or any beers in small volumes - not really.

For wine, figure out what you want and where sells it first. Otherwise Sainsburys and Tesco are likely better for deals and stock levels than Asda, which is going through very tough times as a company currently.

Tesco is certainly not cheaper in NI if you have an ie clubcard. I got wine here at €12 for €9 with clubcard. In NI the same bottle is £7.75. That's marginally more expensive. ASDA had the same prices as Tesco NI but they can have deals on some days.

Research the stores websites before you go.

Be aware that some of the beers are different strengths in NI.

Just back from the North today - tray of Coors - €30.00 euros. Carlsberg - €22.99 euros.

Blossom hill white zinfandel - €7.22

Serious saving if you are stocking up for Christmas.I saved €148 euros today!!

Picked up 4 coors, 4 carlsberg, 4 wine. - €240 or so.

Same down here would be €336 (beer incl 15 cent recycling charge)

Wine €52.00

Cheapest tray of coors down here €42 + your 15 cent per can recycling - so 45 roughly.

Carlsberg the same.

Blossom hill zinfandel down here €12.99

Not been mentioned but Tesco/Sainsburys tend to do a 25% off deal if you buy 6 bottles of wine. It's currently running in Sainburys and crops up every couple of months. Big savings there whether you are buying cheap or fancy stuff.

Roi shoppers should note that you often need a Nectar card for these 25% 6 bottle Sainsburys deals. If you don't have one, you may be charged normal price without the discount.

I know because I was once asked by one such person if I had a Nectar card and could they use it. They were shocked they didn't get the 25% off, cashier explained to them, and then said "if you want to borrow his Nectar card I'll look the other way".

The outlet place is in Banbridge which is a good bit north of Newry. Jonesborough is south of Newry, just over the border.

Traffic in to the shopping centres in Newry is a disaster on December weekends.

Carlsberg is 3.4% in NI. If you're calculating savings you should bear that in mind, it's misleading to compare directly to the Irish price of 4.3% Carlsberg

There are savings to be had for sure. Asda have a 3 for £23 offer with various 10-packs of beer in it. Including some with 5% ABV. Last time I checked that was where the best value was to be had, with the likes of Heineken being around half the price of the comparable m.u.p price here (factoring in that it's stronger up North). I haven't checked lately so maybe there is better value elsewhere.

Asda also have some 4 for 3 and 2 for £10 offers that give savings on some decent beer like Duvel and some of the British craft brands. Not anywhere near half price but decent enough savings.

You should also factor in can size. The cans in the supermarkets are usually 440mls.

In McGeoughs, they are available in 500ml size (I'm not aware of the strength) - a 24 can "tray" for €23.00 (you can pay in euro by credit/debit card).

Carlsberg I got is 3.8% 500ml cans.

Because they are so much cheaper €23.00 v €42.00 Ill just drink more of them :)

In the UK last year they dropped it (Carlsberg) from 3.8% to 3.4%

I wasn't aware of anything here, it's supposed to be 4.3%. But I did a google and im seeing 3.4% in some places like Carryout. Either they're buying NI stock or it's been quietly lowered here.

I don't drink Carlsberg so no skin off my nose but these moves often encourge others to follow suit. At 3.4% you might as well drink water

Some do - Carlsberg and Corona cans do, but not always. They’re the only two I’ve seen with them, it’s likely there’s others.

Likewise, you’ll occasionally get Coca Cola products (all varieties of Coke, Fanta, Sprite) in cans in NI with the Return logo - but there’s no consistency to it it seems.

Went to Sainburys in Lisburn last week Mcguigan Black Label merlot and chardonnay £6.00 with Nectar card. Extra 25% off for six brings it to £4.50 - about €5.40. €8 in Tesco here with clubcard. The more you buy the greater the savings….

I am pretty certain that the 25% off six bottles or more offer in Sainsburys doesn't require a nectar card.

There are often additional reductions on individual bottles of wine that have a nectar discount which requires a nectar card to get them.

I say this because I have been buying wine in Sainsburys for many years and this has always been the case up until the last time I was there which was a couple of weeks ago

If a deal does need one, I'm absolutely certain you can get a Nectar card in-store anyway
