It is for the anoraks out there…probably in short supply these days.
I’ll raise my hand up to say anorak here!
I'm not an anorak, (although, do have a grey rain jacket mind you), but I do appreciate your posts and the information shared within.
Anyone get weird feedback on Nova at times? The noise is like a quick push of a needle off a record, but it's very, very quick and not as high pitched. It's been happening a lot the last week for me.
I wasn't going to ask about it, but we just got an attempted phonecall on air over Brucey there a minute ago. I'm assuming it's Marty making a dogs dinner of it, and am now wondering is he responsible for the weird feedback.
I find it interesting (probably the only one!) that Radio Nova is now on air for 14 years and three of the original weekday presenters are still there in the weekday schedule. They are Marty Miller, Greg Gaughren and Pat Courtenay. I know that none of them are in their original slots, but it is pretty rare these days in radio for that number to stay that long on the weekday schedule.
While I am here, I should point out (in case you are wondering) that Dee Woods, another current weekday presenter, did not initially have any regular slot on the station's schedule. However, I know she was with Nova and, if memory serves me right, was covering news and/or sports and could be heard often. I stand corrected on this but I think Dee's first regular slot was on the weekend when she took over from Breffni Clack. My main point here is that, notwithstanding the fact that she was not on the original schedule, Dee Woods is the fourth current weekday presenter that has been there since the start of Radio Nova, which is impressive too.
If I hear that Talking Heads rip off,The Defector again, I'll throw summat at the radio!
It gets a lot of airtime on Nova for sure.
Fits the Irish music quota I'm sure.
I posted the same last March - no change then.
I've given up on Nova since August, apart from The Guest List sometimes on a Sunday. Just too repetitive - like listening to a limited playlist of maybe 100 songs on endless rotation. It's a shame.
it’s on all day long in my workplace and it is very repetitive but I suppose most stations are. They are still a good station for my age group (50s)
Yup I think every commercial station is the same (repetitive).
UK stations like Heart, Capital and Smooth are the same. I listen to them sometimes on a smart speaker.
Try RTE Gold and you'll never go back to anything else. Commercial free and plays a bit of everything
This issue is getting worse and worse for me. Does anyone else have issues playing Nova on an internet radio? Loads of interference and noise the last few weeks, so bad it's becoming unlistenable at times. It's the only station that does this on the internet radio I use. I'm going to try listening via an internet browser (different input) later to see if it's the same.
On an unrelated note, I still think they could do with a 90s show. Or maybe other specialist shows. Dee Woods' show on Friday nights is basically Nova daytime playlist stuff minus the 60s, 70s, 90s and 21st century music.
They used to do Nothing but the 80s as part of Nova Nights, then that segment became 80s 90s, and now they have an all-80s show on Friday nights with no other decade-specific shows or segments. I think a 90s show would be good, because you don't hear much Gin Blossoms, Sublime, Echobelly etc on Irish radio.
In the first year of Nova, the show starting at 7pm on weekdays, now called Nova Nights and presented by Greg Gaughren, had a 70s only slot between 7pm and 8pm. I think that show used to be on Monday to Friday, rather than Monday to Thursday. I think the original presenter was Enda Murphy.
Interesting!
Here is novas first schedule, I presume "The Rock Report with Thomas Walsh" was a daily talk show? The was before the BAI had some flexibility to exempt certain radio stations from the 20% speech per day rule
That show at 6pm was indeed a chat-oriented show. Despite the name, it was co-hosted by Marty Miller along with Thomas Walsh. Thomas Walsh is the singer of a group called Pugwash and was also one-half of The Duckworth Lewis Method with The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon. It is a bit of a distant memory now, but I seem to remember that Thomas was pretty good as a presenter.
As I had said in another post, those first three presenters are still weekday presenters, albeit at different times now. Also, Nova Nights now presented by Greg is not on Fridays, but Greg is on a number of times over the weekend.
Didn't Thomas Walsh host a weekend show on 2fm for a short time during the infamous John McMahon era?
That rings a very vague bell alright!
It was part of a sunday evening 2FM schedule with himself and neil hannon (divine comedy), it ran for a few weeks or months. they had formed 'the duckworth lewis method' duo at the time.
in the same timeslot other celebrities hosted at least one show, some hosted a few shows. they picked their favourite songs.
tommy tiernan and hector did have the same timeslot for a few months as far as I remember.
the titles of the shows above escape me.
I recall John McMahon was putting shows all over the weekend schedule that even back then, would have been more suited to RTE Radio 1, The oddest choice was a sports show in the old Will Leahy Saturday show slot.
The latest...
Ah yes 2012, "Ballbusters" with journalist Fiona Looney and RTE staffer Andrew O'Connor (son of once former Head of RTE Sport Tim O'Connor, now deceased)
How did they pull that one off?
Aren’t they the only Dublin commuter belt only music station ? (Number 1 or 1) I think this was to save their blushes as they only held the number one slot (for market share) for Dublin music stations for one quarter as they were overtaken by Sunshine. Looks like a creative way to continue to say number 1…
This interference is coming in over the internet browser too. It's making it unlistenable for me at times, so I just change station. They really should look at it though, amateur stuff.
Damn it what did Mairtin just guess? I only heard the end of it, and Pat said interesting……
I caught them playing the Roxy Music version of "Let's Work Together" this morning. Do they EVER play the (vastly superior) Canned Heat version? Seems they think the average Nova listener would prefer something poppy like Roxy Music to some more fullblown classic rock like Canned Heat.
It's a minor point, but it is actually a cover version (renamed Let's Stick Together) by Bryan Ferry as a solo artist, rather than by Roxy Music. Some people (including some presenters!) think the two are interchangeable which is understandable. It would be great to hear Canned Heat's version. I think I may have heard that version occasionally - probably at night time and certainly not recently.
