Bought car with large wipermark on windscreen - help needed

Hi all, I bought a 2nd hand car from dealer last week. Test drove and viewed 3 weeks prior - nothing visible on windscreen.

when I collected the car I noticed straight away a 2cm thick wiper mark right across line of vision. Assumed it was from a bad wiper and I could clean it off.

I bought several products and even brought it to car detailer to try buff mark out with buffing machine. Mark will not come out. Must be damage to glass.

Do I have a leg to stand on with the dealership? I don’t know what else to do other than replace windscreen which I don’t think I should have to do myself.

What can I do?

OP pay its4women the extra €50 or whatever it is per anum for the package that includes windscreen cover. It's worth it. For now - put up with the scrape.

as I said in the original post, I DID notice it when driving home, it looked like the wiper needed replacing as it was raining. No way of telling it was a permanent mark at the time. It doesn’t look like a scratch

In 20+ years I've replaced 1 windscreen so if it's an optional extra I don't buy it.

I'd bring it to a windscreen place & get a quote. From looking at autoglass website they say they try repair before replacing, might be worth seeing if they could fix it.

I've no idea on yhe cost of replacing it but I can't imagine it's life changing, definitely less stressful than trying to cause the dealer

If it's a scratch and across the driver's field of vision, would it pass the NCT?

If it would be an NCT fail, I'm presuming windscreen cover on an insurance policy would cover it (in the event you paid for glass coverage)

It’s unlikely to be a NCT fail in my experience. If you can feel the scratch it will be very difficult to remove. There are scratch removal kits if you are so inclined. Plenty available on Amazon and most use cerium powder.

Even if thae OP had windscreen cover, it was pre-existing damage which occurred prior to when the insurer had the vehicle on cover.

Why do you think insurance companies started talking about windscreen cover as an extra 20 yrs ago. Because they can upsell it. I've been driving for 30yrs n me and all my siblings never had to replace a windscreen. To replace my windscreen atm would cost 250 euros. Windscreen cover is about 50 euros extra. And may be seen as a 'claim ' on your policy....Good luck with that..

That crowd. It was insinuated I was insane when I called them for a quote a few years back, yet they were covering fellas less than a year later. They don't even post you out the policy and disc anymore, rather email it to you and you need to print it off😲 I know because a family member got me to print it off a few times for her. Maybe more Brokers do the same but to me that's a big flag.

What did your detailer use to try and remove the damage? Cerium oxide and a rayon buffing pad on a rotary polishing machine is the only method that will work. You'd be there for days trying to do it by hand after which your arm will definitely fall off.

I replaced one the other week. Hant done so for decades.

Cost me €25 excess. Screen price was frightening because it was heated, and had rain sensors, speed sign recognition, radar, and all manner of other sensors too.
