Gotta admit, I'm with Retro on this, I was fully expecting a trailer drop for each generation with boot up sounds etc. This could have been epic walk down memory lane for folks who've been with PlayStation since the start
They managed to **** it up all the same. It runs at the wrong frame rate which is instantly annoying if you remember the PS1 boot screen (I never turn that boot screen off in emulators).
Anyway more PlayStation nostalgia. This day 30 years ago the PS1 launched in Japan. It certainly wasn't the initial success people might think it is but started stronger than expected with a great port of Ridge Racer. The Saturn promised Virtua Fighter which was the game the japanese public wanted. By the time the system hit the US and Europe it had managed to build up a strong library and the tables started to turn. Sony did everything right with it, other than the dodgy disc drive.
The PS1 is such an interesting console. I just adore it and love talking about it's history, architecture and those sweet, sweet games.
I don’t get the bizarre disinterest Sony has in making their back catalogue games readily available or even part of their legacy. Astro Bot functioned as both a good-natured celebration and a grim reminder of how many of the games homaged within are now completely inaccessible by any official avenues.
I'm kind of with the person that said astrobot's cameos where a little soulless. It's not as egregious but there's a bang of Ready Player One off the cameos. There's a big difference between how the likes of Nintendo, Sega, squaresoft, hell even Konami reference their back catalogue and I can't quite put my finger on that secret sauce other than I feel there's a genuine love for it and there's still people there that worked on those games.
But we also shouldn't forget that Nintendo stuck a SNES rom on a disc (and the **** PAL version in Europe) to celebrate Mario's 25th anniversary. That's next level corporate laziness.
One of the first games i got for my PS1, Total NBA 96. I remember at the time thinking this is it, this is the future, it looked bloody incredible, albeit, it looked a lot better on my memory than the vid below 😄. Also have a core memory of Tomb Raider 1 at Christmas time on a 14 inch monitor. The music, the graphics, the sound, such a bang of nostalgia.
Great interview from Eurogamer. Really goes into what made the PlayStation so great, stuff like the involvement of the Sony music guys and how they used first party games differently than they do now.
I just finished MGS1 from the Master Collection and I'm always reminded that at the time, could not believe how amazing and realistic it looked.
YOU CAN TELL WHERE HIS CHIN JUTS OUT SLIGHTLY IT'S LIKE IT'S REAL LIFE!
Who needs pixel shaders when you have gouraud shaders.
Pretty good. Could have included more older games. Sunk 100s of hours into Tekken 2 perfecting King's moves.
The highlight for me was the 1 second of Street Fighter IV. First game I played on PS3. As if the startup, FHD, OS and sound wasnt enough when we booted up Street Fighter IV it was mind blowing. A huge jump forward from PS2. My friends visited almost daily for about the next month to play before getting PS3 themselves.
We can laugh at this but the PlayStation 1 and it's low barrier of entry in terms of coding and costs allowed the owner of a developer of business software to take a punt at their dream of getting into game development.
This is the seed that lead to armored core and dark souls.
Back then: "This is amazing. Graphics will never look better"
Now: "That water doesn't look wet enough. This game sucks."

Gamers creating their own puddle of p*ss complaining about how a puddle of water in the game was smaller than it was in the trailer of the game.
I remember my mind being blown playing a Demo of the original Syphon Filter on the PS1, absolutely class game!
I always found syphon filter a bit... Middling. I mean the taser was a lot of fun but never saw the appeal when it released, especially after MGS.
It was more action orientated and less preachy. I loved it at the time. Have vague memories of trying to do everything in it. Wasn't gone on the sequels though.
I think I was just playing too many PC games at the time and found the auto aim combat a bit dull.
Its combat was a glossed over Lone Soldier except it was a little less linear in level design
Ah now I would go so far as to call it lone soldier! That game was a true stinker.
I remember warning PlayStation early adopters on school not to buy it but a few did because there was a bit of a post launch drought in games. There was a lot of anger over just how bad that game was.
it is better but the combat was pretty much the same
Launch trailer for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered
Looks awesome. Looking forward to playing SR1 having played the original way back in the day and replaying it earlier this year (before I knew this was coming), but really looking forward to SR2 which I've never played at all.

Shows for me in youtube app search. Aspyr Media YouTube channel has it also.
Not the upgrade it deserved, and still think it has a cartoony look to it. I'll end up getting it just to see, and I hope I enjoy it, but its not what I wanted from my favourite games. Hope it does well all the same, maybe some day get a proper overhaul and modernise it. Suppose it didn't have a big enough draw to begin with.
Not sure what happened there. Have edited it with a new link, think it should be working now.
Looks like the soul reaver will have some of the cut content but it's more an extra rather than being built into the game like some fan mods do
I was too old for power rangers and thought it sucked so have no nostalgia for it but the new game looks amazing. And now it has Goemon style first person fist fights:
Indiana Jones getting some great reviews, delighted for them all at MachineGames, it was quite a gamble.
I'm going to start downloading that on my Series X now so I will be ready for Monday. Let's go!
I've finished the terminator and solid robocop games recently so a hat trick of great movie tie ins would be brilliant.
