Gerry Hutch TD?

With the tallies showing that Hutch is in with an extremely good shout of getting the last seat in Dublin Central I think it's worth discussing this.

There are plenty of parties I don't support, but I can understand why others would support them. I can understand why the typical parish pump independents are supported.

But I cannot for the life of me understand how Hutch has gotten enough support that he's in with a shout.

Can somebody help me understand? Did anyone here vote for him? Or know somebody who did?

I'm not sure you understand how the governmental system works. Unless some mad coalition manages to pull exactly 87 seats, and Gerry Hutch is somehow the only remaining unspoken for TD and agrees to give them his support for a majority, he will not be in government (and if such a wild scenario were to occur, that government would almost certainly collapse in a matter of weeks).

There is no serious possibility of Gerry Hutch being in the next government. If he is not in government, there is absolutely no requirement or likelihood of any member of government playing the slightest bit of heed to anything he says. The only power he will have is to put pressure on the government using his speaking time in the Dáil - which, as an independent TD, will be miniscule.

There’s loads of employment and the best of free education available to everyone now but for some reason some communities seem to have the attitude that it doesn’t apply to them. And that it’s up to someone else to make life better for them instead of doing it for themselves. I don’t know how this cycle can be broken but I don’t think it’s by putting their hopes in the likes of Hutch. (I’m saying this as someone who grew up in the dire poverty of the 50s and 60s, and had to pull myself out of it.)

I was thinking the whole TD run thing was precisely because it makes him safer from the Kinahans and anybody else who might want to kill him.

They wouldn't think twice about gunning plain old Gerry Hutch down in the street, but Gerry Hutch TD, might give them pause for thought.

Well no harm, but I feel no sympathy for the plight of these people.

They'll moan and tell you they have no jobs, despite the country being in full employment and businesses crying out for workers, so much so that we have to bring them in in their tens of thousands. And they them complain about foreigners coming into their country and taking all the jobs!

And I have a sinking feeling Steenson will be the Kingmaker here. Hutch will get a lot of Steenson's 2,195 votes on this count (maybe 700 which would bring him to 4,433) while Sherlock will get only a handful, leaving her about 1,400 behind. I don't see her winning that many transfers from Hourican and Fitzpatrick.

Gary Gannon needs fewer than 200 votes to reach the quota so he could be elected on this count with transfers from Steenson. If not, Gannon will take a lot of Hourican's transfers on the next count (I can't imagine Steenson transfers putting Hourican past Fitzpatrick).

It will be a black day for our democracy if one of Ireland's most notorious criminals is elected to our legislature. Even the most gangster-ridden States don't sink to electing actual Mafia leaders.
