Civil Service pay increments

Sorry if there is a thread already on this. Just looking for some clarification.

So I was newbie in the the Civil Service last September as a CO in the DSP

Am I right in stating that in Sept this year when I am 1 year in my role and my probation is signed off I will go to the 2nd wage (588.60) on the chart below? Thanks

It will be linked to your PMDS - the one you should have done sometime in January or February. You need to have a Satisfactory rating. But if you didn't, and you were on probation, you'd obviously be well aware of that by now.

Kind of…your pmds will give a basic overview but theres an actual probation page they can log into and see what theyre manager said at each one. Also technically probation is finished after 9 months, 9 is your final manager assessment, 12 months is just the hr one so once you got 3 passes with no negatives your done.

Increment yeah, sorry i just meant in terms of if its their first year once they're passing probation then they should be getting the satisfactory too so once the probation says all good so should the pmds

Yes it is. You will skip twice. For eg pt 4 and pt 8 on the CO scale. Or if you get promoted to EO before you skip pt 8 you will skip pt 4 of the EO scale.

Increments are normally awarded after one year on the preceding increment. In the case of the last two increments, you would need to be three years on the preceding increment.

So it would take six years to move from 841.11 to the max of 881.37 - three years in 841.11 and another three years on 868.70.

It’s important to remember that with pay rises over the years, the value of the incremental point you’re on will change. The progression through the scale will however remain constant.

There’s no capacity to skip within the same incremental scale. There just isn’t. I don’t know where you’re getting your information.

If you get promoted to another grade, you move to a different scale completely with different amounts. The point at which you start on any such scale would depend on your salary at your previous grade. For example, if you were promoted to EO, you can’t be placed on an incremental post lower in value to what you might have worked up to as a CO.

But that’s not skipping points within the same incremental scale.

Points 4 and 8 are skipped for new entrants (joined since 2011).

This covers at least CO, EO and AO.

Yes there is - it is part of pay restoration but you only skip the 2 points once - not again if you get promoted to EO

I completed my 3- and 6-month probation satisfactorily, and my 9-month review is in January. Will I be moved up the scale at that point, or do I need to wait until the 12-month mark for that to happen?

You move up at the 12 month point and every 12 months after that until you you get to the top of the scale

Just wondering how can you tell when you're last increment was i.e if you reached the top of the scale and your next increment is the LSI 1 after 3 years at the top? There's no mention of dates increments are applied on the payslip or in the pay portal. I presume the only other option is to contact the NSSO?

Contact your local HR unit, they can see that info on the system and can tell you when you last moved pay point

Does anyone know if increments are backdated i.e. if an increment is due in say early January pending on the end of year pmds sign off and the line manager is absent for the month of January, I presume once the end of year pmds is signed off on the line mangers return arrears for the increment will be paid?

I work in a local authority and I'm curious to know what the term "new entrant" means in relation to the local authority grades and in particular, the skipping points 4 and 8 on the scale. All circulars always reference the Civil Service and it's sometimes difficult to understand the application to the local authority sector.

I started as a Clerical Officer in 2017 and got up to point 3 on that scale.

I got promoted to Assistant Staff Officer in 2020 and got up to point 2 on that scale.

I got promoted to Staff Officer in 2022 and got up to point 2 on that scale.

I got promoted to Senior Staff Officer in 2023 and will be on point 3 on that scale next month. Will my next increment be Point 5 (as I've never been on a point 4 of a scale and therefore can skip that point as per Haddington Road) or Point 4 (as Senior Staff Officer doesn't count as a "new entrant" grade).
