Apologies, that was the semi final I'm thinking of! I didn't think he had a great year considering what he's capable of.
What do you think McStay should be saying about the players leaving? He should be more focused on the players that are still there imo.
If people want to leave, that's their choice and good luck to them. Move on.
Exactly. A purge was needed anyway. Roll on 2025.
Maybe expectations are a little too high when it comes to him. I think the form in and around his All Star was probably pushing it / a real purple patch for him.
I think he's an important player but I wouldn't be saying he's in our top 4/5.
From a club point of view I think many were expecting him to contribute a bit more this year, and in general, I think most people thought he did do that.
Does anybody realistically expect to see Cillian lining out for Mayo in 2026 or later?
Even if McStay was gone by then, would a new manager really want to recall Cillian, more likely they'd be trying to rebuild.
For all intents and purposes it's retirement for him now.
Thats it really. If we're relying on a 34 year old coming back into the panel in 2026 to make an impact, then our panel is in a bad state.
Funny how Donegal view a 35 year old who has been retired for 2 years already coming back into their panel very differently….. 🤷♂️
BTW, I'm not saying that Cillian will definitely be back or anything - just that we should keep an open mind because stranger things have happened. Unless someone emerges from nowhere to shoot the lights out in the club championship next year, then he'll be a viable option to return as we have no freetaker backup of his quality if anything happens to ROD (which we all hope never will!) and an injury free year of rest would make the world of difference to him too.
Just heard from someone at work that Padraig O'Hora has left too. Maybe just a rumor.
Oops. Sorry. Old news.
Its a fair point, but Michael Murphy and Cillian are very different players. Specifically their height and fielding ability, I had assumed Murphy is returning to take the big man in the square approach with the new rules(maybe) coming in. But to be fair to Cillian he has always been good at winning ball up front! So who knows!
Aidan O'Shea who turns 35 in June will be relied on. Footballer of the year Paul Conroy is 35 and Galways panel depth is as good as any team out there.
But my point was they are already in the panel, not trying to break into the panel. Its a different story when you're not in the panel.
A good few Saturday evening games for Mayo and three trips up north.
25th January - Dublin (A)
1st February - Galway (H)
16th February - Tyrone (A)
23rd February - Armagh (A)
1st March - Kerry (H)
16th March - Derry (A)
23rd March - Donegal (H)
What?
Murphy was still the first name on the teamsheet for Donegal right up until he retired.
Cillian has been more of a bit part player or impact sub (which is good by the way, as Conroy, ROD etc. have emerged to take his spot)
It's more to do with injuries than age. Most of these guys look after themselves very well and could play into their mid to late 30s in the absense of injuries. Look at Cluxton, Johnny Doyle, McManus in Monaghan.
At the moment a 35 year old Murphy simply has more to offer than 32 year old Cillian due to his ongoing issues. Similarly a fit 34 year old Cillian could have more to contribute as a bench addition in 2026 than the way he is now in his current situation.
I'd have him and Carr back in a heartbeat if they were fit but it makes total sense for them to opt out right now.
I corrected my original comment to say county semi final. Apart form that its just my opinion.
Yes, I think it's not a like for like situation comparing Murphy and Cillian. The susceptibility to injury would be quite different between them.
Any idea of throw-in times yet?
From the Connacht a short while ago……
Members of the media have been informed they are excluded from attending and reporting on tonight's meeting of Mayo GAA county board.
The organisation has explained it is permitted to have meetings without the media being present.
And, on this occasion, officials have requested that the media is not there to report on proceedings.
"As always, we are greatly appreciative of the media and the support they give Mayo GAA," a spokesperson outlined.
The decision, however, has raised eyebrows in view of the decision announced earlier this week to postpone the annual convention from December 8 until December 18 due to what was described as 'circumstances outside the board's control'.
A full explanation is expected to be given to club delegates tonight when the media is not there.

Christ, I hope this isn't turning into a circus
Doesn't look good!
Remember this?!
Something about the connacht rugby game perhaps or the land for the COE?
Apparently to do with Revenue
The meeting didn't go ahead because of the fog so none the wiser for another while.
Sorry, i don't have a clue about the rugby. What's the connection with the GAA?
Connaught rugby have approached Mayo Co board about using MacHale park next April for an interprovincial game as work is being carried out on the Sportsground in Galway.
So evidently Mayo football was f*cked after Ballina losing to the Sligo champions. Roscommon and Galway must be equally if not more f*cked so. It’s the competitiveness of club championships not progress of clubs at a national level that’s the biggest predictor of inter county success. When Corofin were beating all round them we where easily outperforming Galway every year
Austin O’Malley doing very well with Cuala. First Dublin county final appearance since 1988 and they won. Now they’ve won a Leinster title.
Connaught Rugby games approved for McHale Park in March.
