From all of that I'd only give it credit for the parkour system, which was innovative and worked well, and the modern open world template, which personally I don't think is a good thing, although I feel AC2 and Far Cry 3 were the real innovators there and did it properly.
2007 was a pretty fertile year in terms of innovation and interesting games so can't agree that games had gotten boring.
As for stealth systems with great crowd dynamics, I'll just point out at Hitman Blood Money released 18 months before Assassins Creed and was the game Assassins creed should have been that handled, stealth, assassinations and crowds far better than assassin's creed did.
I also really have to disagree with 'methodical assassinations' because they were all horribly scripted and railroaded. This stuck out like a sore thumb to me especially compared to Hitman. AC2 had much improved assassination missions but in AC1 they were really poor. I waded through the whole game and remember there not being one good one that allowed player expression to find their own solution, which was promised by the E3 trailer.
Oof remember the grind to collect all the flags(?) in AC? I think I got them all in one area, but then it turned out each place had its own to find - over 400 in total, with no way to track what you’d already collected..
DF are saying that while it does have issues, it is much more positive than you'd get from the complaints out there.
Seems the day 1 patched fixed quite a lot.
Yeah the patch does seem to have been pretty substantial, though have read enough reports of multiple lingering issues to be happy to wait another patch or two before jumping in.
30 years ago today the 32 but console wars kicked off with the release of the Sega Saturn in Japan.
A much maligned console but I feel its only real issue was how poorly handled it's release was in the West. There was no way the Saturn could compete against the PS1 with it's insane library. However it was kind of close in that first year of release. Sega would poach Bernie Stollar from Sony who would employ a policy of not releasing RPGs or games that 'looked old' on the Saturn. As a result the Sega Saturn's best games would remain in Japan.
It has a fascinating library to explore and discover, far better than you would expect and while it's no where near as good a console as the PS1, I feel if the Saturn had received ports of those games that were denied a western release then it could have carved out a niche as a specialist console. The console would receive it's last western release in December 1998, in fact it only had 7 releases in 1998.
The system flopped in the West but had a passionate following in Japan and still is fondly remembered there. Virtua Fighter 2 was the big seller there as the japanese public recognized it as the best 3D fighter and Tekken was seen as a more graphically impressive but not as good. Last Bronx and Sakura Wars would become big cultural events with influence outside of videogames.
Always assumed I was going to get one from when I first heard of it, especially being a Sega kid. But by the time the money and opportunity came for me to step into that 32-bit gen, the PS1 had just completely taken over and it was no contest.
Yeah I was the same as a Sega Kid. I mean ridge racer was rad and all but Sega rally was coming and was a better game. And Wipeout was cool but was it as cool as sonic. And then I kind of just watched so much cool stuff come to the PS1 and the Saturn really lagging. The nail in the coffin was resident evil. 1997 for PS1 was one of the all time great years for videogames. Didn't end up getting a PS1 until Xmas 1999 but really wanted one as I was stuck with a PC that was getting very long in the tooth.
Yesterday 30 years ago the 32X launched for the first time in the US.
That's all I've got.
This implies it was the first of many 32Xes to grace the market, which would be on brand for Sega of America at the time.
Finished MGS1 from the collection. I had forgotten how short it is and that's even with the padding of the PSG1 and PAL key backtracking bits. Knock out the cutscenes and you probably have, what 4 hours of game?
Found a cool image of basically the whole game.
Another gaming gig. This one I'd be all over, the incredible job concerned ape did with this game still astounds me and the music was always a highlight.

Look I've been trying to help you guys out for years and you keep ignoring me about Ace Combat 7. I can't make it anymore easy for you than this:
They should get you as a consultant for the next AC game.
I've not been doing a great job promoting it it seems.
It's like when your child is constantly crying. After a while, you learn to just tune it out and not notice it.
Anyone seen any deals on Days Gone?
For PC or ps5?
Thanks, I checked Is There Any Deal, think I'll wait for the next Steam sale.
There should be a Gaming (General) bundle with it and AC7 😜
Black Friday deal: Retr0gamer will buy you a game of his choice if you do not buy Days Gone (proof of non purchase required).
Its €10 on CD Keys. They had it and Zero Dawn for around €15 recently enough.
You should pay extra for it as it's so good 👍
It doesn't make you feel like Maverick a d Iceman though.
You can't put a price on that.
You can....... €5.99.
Is the system shock remake worth a punt. I saw it for €25 in Smyth's. At that price it feels like it could be.
There’s a good Humble Bundle at the moment that bundles it with all the Crysis games, Doom 2016, Prey and Dark Forces Remastered for less than 20 quid: https://www.humblebundle.com/games/scifi-shooters?hmb_source=humble_home&hmb_medium=product_tile&hmb_campaign=mosaic_section_4_layout_index_2_layout_type_threes_tile_index_1_c_scifishooters_bundle&_gl=1*1ry13mp*_up*MQ..*_gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQiAuou6BhDhARIsAIfgrn7t-zxCtn5jN4OUNeonQAFjA5a-Kxb6kCu5MuNkIeeB1_jZu9YxyX4aApaJEALw_wcB
Yeah it's fantastic but be forewarned that the progression through the game sticks very closely to the original PC game so doesn't hold you had. You have to pay attention to figure out where to go to next... Or see a walkthrough.
Starfield Shattered Space DLC is as good as Far Harbour. It has some great spots in the massive game world area without any duplicates. I put some hours in yesterday and today as well as playing it since launch. I have been busy enough lately which affected my game time. I done one excellent side mission in an orphanage. Managed to figure it out on my own which added to the joy. If you are on the fence about this DLC I can say do it as it's that good.

Buy three game from this section and get 30% off your order. Days Gone is included but there's also Baltaro, Disco Elysium and Dave The Diver which lots of people recommend.
I also spotted Dark Souls 3 and a few DLCs.
2K has decided to sunset the 2K Launcher that a number of its games use on Steam and the Epic Game Store. Just means one less launcher running at the same time when you run some of their games like Civilization V and VI.
